Muzzle Problems

Hi all.... Hoefully somebody can help with this little problem..... we have Baxter an 8 mth old sheepie who's an absolute darling - particularly when it comes to grooming. He's my second OES and I've been experiencing some issues with his muzzle - partiuclarly under his chin. It's never ever dry. I never had this with Boot and I think it's bothering him quite a bit. We've been wiping his mouth dry as part of a game and we're brushing 3 - 4 times a week - I'm just not sure what to do about it. I know that after they drink there's an almight mess - but he's just not drying off. There is no skin irritation that I've been able to find - it's just dank and wet consistently and we are a tad worried that it will lead to some sort of dermatitis.... Does anyone have any experience or suggestions on how to deal with this? Thanks so much
Cheers, Jude

I would put a little dog shampoo a drop or two or a drop or two of washing up liquid - the hand wash type for dishes into a spray bottle of water, just wash off his chops with this a few times a week and dry afterwards, his muzzle won't be dry but it will be clean (clean not white), and with warmer weather on the way it'll probably start staying drier.
To dry the chin, teach him to put his head in your lap (where you have a towel handy) and gently lay his head on the towel then give him plenty of head scratches and let the chin dry without direct rubbing on your part. They are very wiggly at this age and don't want you messing with him, "Oh Mom, why do you torture me this way?"
good tips. one thing to keep in mind though is some sheepies drool.
My Daisy will be 2 yrs old April 1st. She has always had a wet, very wet and dirty chin. I usually have a towel around just to "dry her chin off". It never gets completely dry.

I recently had to shave her chin/beard because I noticed some skin irritation and her face was stinky. Believe me I cringed at the idea. But I finally gave in and I am so happy I did. My family can touch her face without screaming "I've been gravy-ed". Her face is 99% more dry than before.

Daisy has a thick coat and you can't really noticed the naked chin unless you raise her head up. But yeah it looks weird under there.
I've had a couple wet mouthed oes too.... I think the main thing is to keep their beard combed, absolutely mat free, so the water or drool runs out of it instead of staying close to the skin where it can get dirty and irritating for their skin.
I find by combing the mouth every morning and then using kitchen towel to dry this works really well. To stop the smell you could use a little bit of baby powder but be careful with this.

Show seasons do a face wash, I've used a different one here in the uk and that works great..........
Towel off after a drink. I use a little hand towel that I keep beside the water bowl.

Hard when they are dribbly (wet Face) another thing is get some "Corn Starch" or "Potato Flour" You grab a hanfull and squish it into the wet or goobie beard and just brush it out. It is a "Dry Clean" method that dries the beard straight away and also helps remove goobies from the beard.
Thank you all for the tips ! I have been towelling him off - which he apparently loves and thinks is part of the big game that he lives in ! hehehe - But I will definitely try some of the excellent ideas - I think I've just got myself a drooler.... which is no biggie as he is still the most beautiful boy... Oh and by the way - I'm glad the scorching hot weather is over....... We live in Australia and the nice (hopefully) wet winter will be upon us soon.... This will get very interesting with Baxter ! Again thanks you all so very much !

I'm in dry dusty ol Adelaide - Where are u all from ?? Nice to see !!!
Melbourne :roses:

Bally you can see on her avatar she spends her time between Vic and NSW.

Where is your fur kid from? Have lots of friends in Adelaide and are you a member of the OES club of SA? If not then you should join to meet others in the area with OES there a great bunch over there and I usually go to adelaide once a year to show. Have one of my babies in Adelaide and they joined the club over there for help and meeting other OES through the state club.

If not a member then PM me and if interested will give you contact details. :D

hi from sunny Sydney!!!!!
My baby is from an unexpected litter from Silverlia - His mum is from Bobbysox - and she is gorgeous. Dad is massive and his name is Henley and has a Canadian pedigree along with a beautifully silken coat. Baxter will be quite a biggin' as well if all goes true to form ! My previous baby, Boot, was from Victoria, but I'm not sure whereabouts. I came onto the scene when he was about 5mths old. But they are all gorgeous and I love him to bits ! Have tried a couple of the things with his muzzle and it is definitely cleaner - although as I said, I suspect Baxter is just a drooler and is quite happy to do so !!! And you know how stubborn our fur kids are !
i got a water bowl that only allows a small puddle of water to be on top so that they cant gulp. it did wonders for billies beard. though it dousnt help when he drinks out of the pond. this is a link to it
http://www.roadrefresher.com/ they were everywhere at crufts. i would recomend them for any dog with a beard
Thanks for all the tips on the wet beard. Chloe is a drooler too, and I didn't know to do anything for it. :o I'm going to look into the non spill water bowl also, just the thing for those car rides that she never tires of.
