springing a leak in the crate

Kirby is 14 weeks old and we are having some difficulty crate training him. The crate is just big enough for him to lie down and turn around.

When he is out of his crate, he is very good about letting us know when he needs to go out. The only accidents he has are when we miss his signals. At night, he is also very good. We usually need to let him out once, but he never messes his crate during the night.

Our problem is when we leave him during the day. We aren't sure how long he should be able to hold it now (we figure his behavior at night is not an indication, since we take up his water in the evening). It seems that whenever we leave him for longer than two hours, he has an accident in the crate. Not a huge puddle, but he ends up soaking it up with his fur.

When we let him out, he still has to go so he rushes outside. It doesn't appear that he empties his bladder in the crate, so he is exercising some restraint. If we leave anything absorbent such as a plush toy or towel, he goes on that.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Tom

14 weeks may be too young to leave him too long in the crate. They rule of thumb is that they can hold it the same number of hours as their age in months.... So that means that he can hold it for about 3.5 hours.

Get some puppy pads to avoid messes, and try to let your doggie out as often as you can from the kennel.
That's the thing -- he should be able to hold it longer, but has accidents in under 2 hours. Are we doing something wrong?
You may want to see if he has a Urinary Tract Infection - just to rule out any medical cause.
Our Ben, who is three months old, was doing the same thing, in addition to having accidents in the house while out of the crate. I thought maybe it was because he was asleep at night but awake during the day and the boredom got to him.

I covered the crate with a blanket to encourage him to nap and also I took out the bedding(just in the daytime). For the last ten days, he has been dry in the crate during the day for about 5 and a half hours.

Maybe this will work for you.
All dogs grow at different rates. When our younger dog was a pup the vet 'diagnosed' him as having a TINY bladder. His body was growing faster than his bladder was. When he was more active during the day his bladder was also more active. We ended up hiring a dog walker to come in and walk him during the day. I would let him out super early in the morning before work, my husband would let him out later in the morning before he left then the dog walker would take him out around noon.
His insides did eventually catch up with his outside and he does much better now with his control.
Tom, our puppy Murphy had a problem with that too. We ended up taking him to the vets, and sure enough he had a urinary trac infection. They put him on antibiotics for 10 days, after 3 days no more accidents :D Hope this helps loried
