Lump on Walter's back

I found a nickel sized lump on Walter's back last week. I just checked and it is still there, same size. It it slightly squishy and moves around when I push it.

He is going to be 6 soon, so I realize he might be at that age where he could get fatty tumors. But should I be worried? Should I take him to the vet for a biopsy? He was just at the vet a few weeks ago and got a clean bill of health but I didn't know about the lump at the time.

My head is telling me that it's probably fine, but he's my baby so I can't help but worry... so any input is appreciated!

Exactly. ...of COURSE it just had to happen just after the vet visit too.

If it's nice and squishy, I might not go in right away... fatty tumors of have a special feel to them. But if it's hard or gets harder/firmer I'd be thinking about going in. Then again if you're concerned.... go in.

Look v. carefully at the skin for any signs of an infection or break in the skin or for an infected hair follicle, although those usually get very hard by the time they're the size of a nickel.

Sigh.
Heather, it's most likely a quick and painless appt: vet draws some cells from the (most likely) cyst with a big needle, looks at them under a microscope, they look normal, s/he tells you not to worry, just keep an eye on it.

Belle's had a large one on her stomach for at least three years now. It doesn't interfer with anything, so vet sees no need to remove it. Some of them, depending on type, can burst (drain and usually refill) which puts them at risk for staph and possibly other infections, in which case they need antibiotics and may be candidates for removal. My first OES had numerous fatty tumors. Not all dogs get them, but some who do go on to sprout small fields of them apparently.

Less likely that it's anything malignant, but, of course, I freaked out when I first found Belle's cyst and felt so much better after vet put my mind at ease. Her's has been completely uneventful and she's never sprouted another one. It doesn't thrill me, but I no longer go into cardiac arrest when I feel it

Is it squeezable, like a pimple? I'd hot compress that thing and see what happens (then call the vet :)).
Where abouts on Walter's back is the lump and did he receive any injections at the vets?

About 6 weeks ago my Dalmo was attacked at the park and had an antibiotic injection up between the shoulder blades, I found a lump there 2 weeks latter. Bit bigger than an almond and I could move it around. I rang my vet and they said its probably a reaction at the injection site. They said to massage it gently and if it didnt start to shrink over a week to come in. Its half the size now, so I'll just monitor it.

Hope Walter's lump is nothing to worry about too :)
He did get shots, but the lump is lower on his back so I don't think it's a reaction... good idea though, I wouldn't have thought of that.

I don't think it would squeeze like a pimple, I will investigate though. When I was a kid my dad used to squeeze our dog Shaggy's cysts all the time.... and I am totally gagging thinking about it!

I think I am going to give it a week and if it is still there I am going to take him to the vet. I know I will worry and obsess over it if I don't get it checked out.... sigh
Ewwww, I wouldnt be squeezing, yuk, and it could make things worse.

This lump definitely wasnt squeezable, just a gentle massage. Good luck.
I'm betting on a cyst. They are fairly common. Jack has two on either side of his sternum, I call them his man boobs. I'll have the vet aspirate them when we go for heartworm testing next month.

Mo has one someplace else  I think over some ribs.

No, I wouldn't squeeze cysts since they can rupture internally and then you've got a much bigger problem.
Bassets are very prone to them as well :(
Simon has one sprouting over his back, in the loin area just off from his spine. It appeared a week ago, I am just watching it for now. They go in for HW, etc checks soon, so if it stays small, I will continue to just observe....

We had one rupture years ago on our basset Daisey. She had to have surgery on that one. I was a basket case waiting on the results from it. Thankfully just a cyst.

hope the same for you :)
I have had both a cyst and a fatty tumor removed form Marley and a cyst from Morgan. Like I said - financing a wing.
I would not mess with it It could be a cyst or a fatty tumor. Maybe call the vet and ask if you should bring him in. As said before, my lab had fatty tumors , my vet stuck a needle in , withdrew some cells and looked under the microscope. Fatty tumor. I hope all goes well for your boy.
I investigated Wally's and it is definitely under the skin so rest assured nothing will be squeezed 8O

Oh my - I reversed that didn't I? Morgan has both removed, Marley just the one.

Having the vet aspirate it can help hem/her to decide how to treat it as well. We also had some drained with well drains on Morgan that then didn't have to be removed.
I am sat here - totally grossed out!

I have images of teenage sheepies squeezing zits in the mirror
