I don't use the card much, don't use it for online purchases. The weird thing is that Medieval Times is in my area. But I have the card--it's not like it was stolen. Of course now I'm paranoid. I've checked the online balances for my other credit cards and everything looks fine. |

That's terrible. We've been thinking of paying for that service where they monitor anything under your ssn (cards, etc).
Have you used it at a restaurant? they could have written your number down? |
We have had AmEx call us several times over the past 2 months
with charges that weren't ours. How they caught them I just don't know. Thank god they did though. They cancelled the card each time an fedexed a new card the next day. I was really surprised that we actually got the new card the next morning each time. Other than that we have never (knock wood ) had any problems with any other card. After all the horror stories I've heard, some thanks to this group, I keep a very close eye on every charge. I don't think you can be too careful where money is concerned. Shellie |
We had a credit card number stolen a few years ago----the number was found with a bunch of others on a laptop at the University of Michigan ( we lived in Montana at the time.) The transaction was done at a Walmart and Target with a physical credit card in Southern California! The credit card was always with us and we don't use that one online- -but we think the number was stolen at a local restaurant and then a card was made with our number.
We haven't had anything happen since, but it still makes me a little nervous when the waiter takes a credit card to pay the bill. American Express is great about catching things - I am glad they we able to catch yours!!! |
Paula, that's terrible. I don't know how that could have happened. Oh..BTW, Tony and I were in your area yesterday. We went to Medival times for dinner! (Just kidding ) When we were robbed, the crook got all of my cards, but they didn't use any...nor did they use my cell phone. I think my crook was just looking for cash. |
I have used the card once in the last 2 months, to charge the rental car from my accident. And I use that card for iTunes. Other than that, it's pretty much dormant. It's very weird. I pay my credit card bills online--could someone have gotten the number that way? I thought all those sites were secure. |
I don't know if this includes itunes, but there was just a special online about the NUMBER ONE place people go to steal your credit card info, social, etc... is on music sites. I hope this isn't the case for you esp. since you said your charge seems to be local.
But just to tell you what the special was about... they usually sell it to 100s of people, just from 1 online session. They found a couple who let their daughter go online for music, and dateline or whoever did this special found their social, etc in thailand and several other countries. They also said that they're able to take any info you have EVER put on the computer. Anyway, music sites or anywhere you download movies, etc were horrible places to go according to them. |
I had this happen about 1 month ago. My understanding of the situation was that nothing had been charged to my account but my card number fell within a range of numbers used for fraudulant charges. People would break into a system (say at at bank or credit union) & steal a bunch of numbers. In my case it just caused a lot of headache as far as getting a payment posted correctly that was in transit at the time. I check my accounts online just about daily. And I have 1 Visa that no matter what the charge, if I say I didn't make it, they will credit my account. |
I just received a new Bank of America Credit Card as they said a lot of theirs had been compromised............ I almos didn't even upen it up as i thought it was just another 'sign up for this' thing.......... |
We had the same thing happen with one of our Visa's. It has a very low limit and it was almost maxed...but they sent us a new one too. |
Same thing happened to a friend of mine. His card was maxed out with all sorts of stuff. Luckily he got it all back.
They think it was when he used it to pay in a restaurant. The waiter took his card away to put it through the machine and they copied down all the details. His bank told him NEVER to let the card out of his sight. Such a drag. On the up side a lot of restaurants here are using the portable machines that they bring to the table so there's no worries about giving you card to the waiter. |
My debit card was used in Manitoba but was still in my possession. The bank credited my account but when I asked how they could find out who did it they told me they don't bother, it's just a part of doing business . No wonder bank fees are so high |
Going through the same thing with my bank. Somehow visa check card numbers were stolen and mine one of them. Cant the world just leave Obe and I alone? I guess every bodies wish actually. |
About a month ago, my bank called me to tell me that my debit card number was hacked (along with a whole series of their debit cards) and they would send me new card and cancel the old. But they kept it "alive" til the new card came. But THEY (and I) monitored the activity daily until then. I wonder how they know something has been hacked. |
