So I guess we are going to....North Carolina. He was looking into it on the computer and got VERY interested in the things to do AND it seems to be very dog friendly. This would not have been my first choice to go, but beggers can't be choosers. So what can we expect besides HOT? |
|
Depends upon where in NC you want to go. I lived in Jacksonville for 5 years *USMC**, and the coastal towns are really neat.
Expect very hot and muggy............. The western side of the state is neat too. Only visited it one time, Ashville and it was gorgeous. I have a great B&B there we stayed in... old victorian house full of antiques. |
No experience with NC.
But we went to the west of there - to the Smokey Mountains on the east side of TN. Earlier in the year, but very, very beautiful. I would love to go back. We went in on the Townsend side (south entrance) and it was way less commercialized than the upper (Dollywood, etc) part. One big traffic jam on the night we went out there. I say go on vacation, but do it with moderation. Don't go big into debt on it. We are cheap vacationers. We only spend the money we have. I have a friend who spends MONTHS paying off her charge card after her family's vacations. Talk about adding more stress.... |
Western NC has great weather during July...I live in Waynesville and up in the mountains...avg temp in July is 65 in am and 80 during hottest part of the day...it rarely gets over 75 at my house (4000 elevation) and that is on days that it is in the high 90s everywhere else. There are lots of places to rent cabins in Maggie Valley, Waynesville, Nanahalla, Bryson City, Dillsboro and North GA has beautiful places as well around Talluga Falls, Dillard etc...Asheville is more expensive than the mountain areas. Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg have really inexpensive places to stay with lots to see and do as well. We have a house behind Dollywood and enjoy going over when we just want to see shows and eat out...lots to choose from and not expensive...it is warmer there in summer than the NC mountains...it gets humid and will hit 90s during day in July. My OES Daisy thought TN in the mountains in July was great when we would drive over from Charleston SC which was 80s in the am and hitting almost 100 during the days of July. Years ago Dollywood allowed dogs in the park but not anymore. |
When we were young our parents saved $ for vacation time...we went as far as half the money would take us and then spent the other half coming home. Of course those were the days people didn't have credit cards...it was a fun adventure for all and of course our parents didn't come home in debt. It was fun seeing how we could save $$ so we could go further also. As children we were more aware of how much things cost and watched our parents live within their means as they had little choice to do otherwise. |
Maybe Tammy will pipe up. She's in North Carolina but can probably give some good advice.
I don't think we're going to go on any big vacations this year. I wanted to go on a castle tour in England this summer but I'm not sure if we're going to go because I decided I wanted to redo the bathroom instead! We've already gone to NYC a couple of times and we're going to Vegas next month. Maybe a cheap cruise later in the year so we can do something? I don't know. I'm pretty spontaneous about vacations because I follow the good deals so sometimes the time and place are secondary! |
Sheepie Palooza will be our vacation this year! |

Me too, although Todd won't be coming. With him doing "early Retirement' aka taking severance package instead of playing layoff roullet, I don't know what we will do for vacations anyway. We never do much more than short camping trips normally. Having all the animals pretty much limits the time both of us can be gone at the same time. Dog events make up the bulk of my requested time off from work. Our trip last spring to Lisa's graduation in NY and stay out at Cape Cod was our big trip. Getting all the dogs farmed out, 2 boarded and animal chores all lined up was a feat! |
We were thinking about a vacation but then we decided this was the year we should vinyl side the house. We aren't getting any younger & the upkeep is taking longer each year. So that is pretty much our vacation this year. Between the house & the yard work (3 acres) we had to make a decision. And moving somewhere else with less ground was out of the question. We may wait & go somewhere next winter, say in February when it is just plain ugly around here. I hate boarding the dogs especially as they are getting older now (soon to be 11, a 9 & a 4 year old), even tho' I have a great boarding kennel nearby. I get my little getaways now & then when I take the dogs & go to dogs shows. We travel, stay in motels or the trailer & eat out. That's plenty for me for now. |
We would love to go on a cruise since prices are OUT OF THIS WORLD right now. Some going for like 400 when are usually 1500+. Sil just took her family of 5 to disneyland for 1400 (that's 5 days plus passes, etc).
BUT... vacation time will be used this year for the birth of child #3. |
No vacation for me, it's way too hard with the older boys. I wouldn't leave them anywhere for fear something would happen and I wasn't there. Maybe someday... |
Well, it's all going to depend upon when the surgery is done, but i plan on going to Sheepiepooloza........... and going to see Norm in S. Korea and stop on the way back in Spain to see my friends, then on over to UK to see friends (love traveling by train in Europe).
Then there is always the Nationals in October this year. I'm wishing i had left today for Belize (or somewhere close by there) as it was 76 degrees today and snow expected twice this week! NO moisture all winter and then now............ I feel it in my back, it is coming. I cannot complain as we NEED the moisture so badly......... |
Nope!!! we have our hands full with the new "kids" and I will noy kennel them. So we will take day trips. They are fun and we learn about NYS. Tons of things to do |
We just got home from Spring Break with the kids - OKC to Houston, San Antonio and back to north TX to see family. Wirlwind trip but I have to say that the economic issues did not seem to impact any of the places we visited: Houston Aquarium, Houston Space Center, Kemah Bay, Sea World - all of them were absolutely PACKED. The only place we went that wasn't crowded was Galveston - but that's because most of it is still gone from Ike.
We're back in north TX next month for my brother's wedding. We're going to Branson for a long weekend in June, Pensacola for a week in July and northern NM for a week in August. Might try to take the kids back to Sea World before school starts again in September. |
We are taking our annual trip to Key West May 16 -23. I did not feel good about it, since money is so tight. However, we have a Hyatt time share, which is paid for, so not going would be foolish. The closer the trip gets, the more excited I am about itl I love it there. And I can truly leave the nastiness of the world behind. We have a 2 bedroom condo, so this year we will be eating in more than out..but we will have the sun, the booze and the wonderful wackiness of Key West, none the less! |
Dh is the one that picked NC, he wanted to go somewhere that also offers Whitewater rafting
We don't use credit cards for vacation. I hate paying them off. We save through the year and then we have enough for a nice two week vacation. We usually camp to save $$$ |
DH and I are fighting over this right now. He wants to go somewhere, I want to stay home. Three years ago, we took a long weekend to SF - and when we got back, he was laid off. I get physically sick to my stomach over this.
But my DH and older son just got back from a camping trip to Beaver's Bend. My son took his dog with them. She is turning into quite the camper. She loved the canoe ride - they had to stop her drinking out of the river because they were afraid she would pee in the canoe. But she did great. They will be going camping again next month. My daughter will graduate in May 2010 and is thinking about working as a traveling PT. She would spend 14 weeks in each location - so we could take a long weekend and go see her in each location. The boys could come stay with the dogs while we are gone, then we could pay their airfare for them to go see her. |
NC is actually a very dog friendly state!!!
Tammy is in western and I am eastern so, let us know where you are headed and we can offer suggestions! That time of year unless you like HEAT I would suggest western. The mountains are beautiful and there are alot of cool places to visit. Vacation is vacation...always something new to explore!! BTW....my vacation this year is my son's graduation from Virginia Tech and then Sheepiefest in Chicago in October!!!!!!! |
I'm going to Cyprus in August. So looking forward to it.
Doing nothing but relaxing....Bliss |
well SHeepiepalooza of course
I usualy go to florida every 6-8 weeks - my dad and sister and her family are there. I haven't been down since last laborday weekend. Between being sick and the bad economic news I have stayed home more - although I did visit my daughter in November in VA where she moved in October. I have been thinking if putting the dogs in the car and drivingt o florida again for a long week or maybe two sometime this summer. It would be cheaper and easier (no boarding etc) and I could take the dogs to the beach Hubby and I very rarely vacation together. He likes to stay home, I like to wander We do live at a lake community with lost to do when we are home though. |
It is hard to get motivated for a travel vacation when you live in the Vacation Capital...Florida. We plan on going up to Michigan for a few days to see our sons, grandchildren, our sisters and also picking up our granddaughter for the summer. We are also picking up the last of my daughter's possestions that she had left behind....so it will be a car ride..1400 miles one way.
For the 6 weeks my granddaughter will be here, we will be going on day trips and weekend get aways. I'm sure we will be at Disney a few times. Sea World is a "must." |

We're taking our honeymoon in June to Mexico. We originally planned to go to France for le Tour, but since I haven't been able to find full time employment we had to axe that plan. We were thinking of a camping trip, but our relatives decided to help us out with plane tickets/hotel so we are doing the all inclusive/beach thing in Cabo. |
