can anyone help me in colorado?

hello! im new to this lovely website, but equally excited! i am almost 30 years old, and i have always wanted an old enlgish sheepdog. i finally convinced my husband that we should rescue one, but there are two problems. i have never seen an oes! it is kind of odd, but does anyone here know where i might go to see and pet one? just to feel more comfortable? and then the biggest question, where oh where can i get one!? i have papers with the society that fosters them for the state, they dont have any dogs. i put my name on a list at the humane society, they dont get them that often. i have searched for hours on the internet, and if i can see one and love it as much as im sure i will, i will drive to go get one, but where!? i would feel more secure with a dog around a year old, definatley not a puppy. but i just need some help here. anyone have a dog in the denver area they wouldnt mind sharing? just to look at and to pet?

thanks!

I presume when you mention the society that fosters them for the state you mean Colorado Old English Sheepdog Rescue? ( http://www.oesrescueofcolorado.org/index.html ) It's run by Bette Green who is in Peyton, less than 2 hours away from you at a guess.

Why don't you explain to her that you want to be educated about the breed? As a breeder and someone who shows in conformation as well as agility, Bette knows the breed well. She doesn't have rescue dogs herself last I checked, rather a couple of them are relatives of my dogs, so they're probably a bit different in looks and temperament than what you typically find in rescue, though not generally that different. And she can certainly show you the ropes including what's involved in grooming and training and living with big hairy dogs

If you meet up with her say hi to Cha Cha, sister of the big dog depicted in my avatar and aunt of the puppy. She also has one of Cha Cha's puppies who should be a bit over a year or so old now, so that should give you some idea what that age is like...This is not a breed that matures very quickly  I just saw one of Cha Cha's sons a couple of days ago and though he is a love he is, hm, lively shall we say

If that doesn't scare you off, hopefully a rescue dog will come along for you soon.

Best,
Kristine

What's the story about these dogs & your organization? Are you non profit?

Iwantaoes, I agree with Mad Dog, check out OES rescue of Colorado. Very reputable folks.
We are a non-profit. We just teamed up with Nita and Nancy from Midwest OES Rescue. We are acting as the Missouri Kansas chapter. The story is posted in other threads in this forum.

That's Nita's rescue but I don't know where that Web site came from.

Gotcha, sorry, never saw that web site before... is it new?

Here's the thread to the story about the dogs. http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=24294
Come to Boulder! You can see my Maggie at the dogpark almost any day of the week. There are lots of sheepies in Boulder.

Great pictures! I see 7 of the dogs have been shaved down...
can we see pictures of the other 2 dogs after they've been groomed?
Ali
I will try to get photos of Summer and April up tonight. they are shaved as well. Summer is the oldest and April is younger. They are both females that have been fixed and had shots. They are ready to go.
Oh, goodness, yes there are dogs in the Denver area. Maggie the Wonder Dog in Boulder, Ali with her crew in Johnstown, Obe controlling the lake in Evergreen...... And several breeders as well. Bette Greene who runs rescue is down in Peyton NE of Colo Springs. Stasha is in Arvada.............hmm, who else.......hmmmm

If memory serves me, the Mile Hi Kennel Club has their show this year along with the Flatirons KC in Longmont, May 29-->31. It's held at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont. You'd need to find out when the sheepdogs will be shown as they won't be there all days.

Of course a dog for show is all dressed up in his/her finest show coat, truly a work of art and very dedicated work. When looking for a pet it might be better to start with a dog in shorter coat.
