It's Raining Men

Okay this has nothing to do with the Paris coat ha ha...but started when my son used the downstairs shower and it overflowed onto the tile floor. He didn't tell me immediately about it , instead tried to clean it with one towel. I turn on the washing machine and notice soapy bubbles emerging near the downstairs toilet. I investigate and discover the shower fiasco. I call the plumber.

Plumber arrives and I show him the shower believing the downstairs line was plugged or something. The water from the tile floor has dissapeared down into the crawl space. We go down there and he gets out a 90 foot snake with camera attached and tries to find my IC line. All he can see is water in the pipe and slowly releases it. He ask for a bucket and suddenly the battle is on...water gushing out of the pipe onto the floor and his mad race to pass me the full bucket so I can empty it outside and race back in to pass it back to him. It comes out full force drenching him while he desperately tries to stop the now gushing flow. He is shouting...EWWWWW sewer line. I gasp and notice the smell.

The city is called and although it's after hours they show up with a humongous truck and go down into the manhole across the street and suction it. They are in and out of my home inspecting the home and grounds. They tell me a crew will arrive tomorrow with cameras. I pray the fault is with the city line and not my IC line (this is the homeowners personal line) Mine could not be located and it's discovered one was not put in originally when the house was built. It's now mandatory for all homes. Whew - so city's responsibility.

Today I get a phone call from the city stating they have started a claim on my behalf. I'm a tad confused as besides cleaning the crawlspace I'm not sure if I even have any damages. I notice a crew outside again and later in the day another engineer shows up. Hmm this must be serious!
Another person from the city calls and ask me to get in touch with my insurance company. I do and within the hour two crews show up regarding the "emergency". They have sensors which detect ewwww dare I say it...fecal matter in the crawl space. Egads.

I show them the original place where it all started - the downstairs shower. The detector beeps. Next thing the contractor speaks to the adjuster about ripping out the shower, indoor hot tub, tiles ect....and getting a full salvage crew to also work on the crawl space. My home smells like a sewer and it' s not the dogs fault!!

I've never been so exhausted as each person that arrives means me single handedly trying to hold off three bouncing dogs while trying to show them around. The new place which I adore has no backyard where I can place them as the 1/2 acre is fully fenced but they then race around to the front door as soon as I let them out the back.

Sigh all day I dish "it" out, clean "it", Pick "it" up from the lawn and now my home smells like "it".

OMG I feel your pain!!!! I thought my plumbing disaster was bad but its not a pinch on yours.
They just couldnt find the IC line because the builder tipped a truck load of gravel on it. It cost me a $1000 to find it and then they were able to tell me it is the city's problem. I still have to pay the $1000 but the problem is fixed. And all the icky stuff is outside in the yard.
You poor thing I hope it gets fixed real soon and they dont have to pull out too much of your house.
Do you have an upstairs bathroom? Or are you bathroomless??
Good luck with it all. 8O :?

PS Just reread the subject title; any good looking ones.
I smell a new bathroom out of this deal! lol
 Your life is so erm... interesting

Are you sure about that?? Crikey!
Ugghhh - nasty!

My sewer story is bad, but at least it was mostly outside my house.
We are rural, so we have a pipe that goes outside to a septic tank, drainfield and all that good stuff.
Enzymes break "it" down, but periodically (every few years) it needed pumping out to remove the accumulated solids. Solids are bad - if it gets too full, it plugs the filters and baffles at the top edge of the tank. (Been there, don't wait!)

So, we had the company out pumping, I was home that day. As the guy is pumping, I notice a black river forming under his truck....
Seems he didn't get the drain plug closed all the way in the bottom of the truck tank, and it was leaking out on my driveway as he was pumping it in!! He was just finishing when I noticed it, and he drove off - leaving this nasty mess on my driveway. Oh, and it was winter, so it was very obvious on the white snow on the driveway.

So, I call the company, and tell them about the mess and how he just left! I was very peeved...I think he figured that out by my tone of voice. I went out and took pictures too - and my OES Ollie was in the background too.
They came back, but of course it was now black sewer sludge ice. They tried to scrape it, ended up just covering it with crushed lime. The bad part was, it was right in front of my house and across the front of my sidewalk. Yuck - we had to walk across it every time we went in and out, all the rest of that winter.....

Then, they had the nerve to send me the bill - for the FULL amount. I was very peeved - again! I sent them a letter back, including a copy of the pictures I had taken. I used Ollie as a scale reference - told them that was a 80 pound dog in the background!
They substantially reduced my bill.... :D

Oh, and they are due out this week to pump our tank..... 8)
oh i feel your pain ,yesterday i needed a plumber and first time my boys saw a service guy they thought he was there to play with them.. arrrr so hard to keep 2 off of a man ,so for you ,you need another arm.

got to agree with that statement

Marianne I think you should write a book and I'm sure it would be a best seller
The same thing happen to my in laws TWICE. I feel your pain.
Marianne, When is this run of bad luck going to STOP???

Dawn, I REALLY hope you didn't pay that bill!! I would have fought tooth and nail but they would NOT have gotten a penny for that pumping!
Thanks for all the sympathies and hopefully I will recover the monies I paid to the plumber and the 500 deductible to the insurance company which has now reached in total a grand.

The workmen arrived today and set up machines and hoses to fix the crawl space and desanitize it - the humming machine will run until Tues. They also started taking apart the tile in the hot tub room. I also have to empty the hot tub and will have to figure out what's what's as all those pipes and contraptions are in the garage. The contractor will show up Monday after work and the guys are going to continue work on Tues. Oh joy!

Dawn after reading your story, you have my sympathies and thinking your case was worse. Poor you!!!

Mim - feel for your parents too and all those others who have gone through the same thing. Makes me realize I've taken 21st century plumbling for granted all these years.

I do agree though I think people would never believe it was true :D

I hope you get sorted soon and get a nice new bathroom out of the deal.
Oh no, mine was not worse.

Mine thankfully didn't involve ripping my house apart!!! 8O
