We think our sheepdog is about 2 and a half and she loves to dig in the dirt and we are pretty sure she eats some of it too. Not sure how to remedy the situation, except keeping a close eye on her and forcing her to stop! |
I think they do this because they are looking for a mineral that they feel there short of! Not sure which one................ |
McCartney is 4 months old and loves to eat rocks, mulch, dirt, etc. So you aren't alone. I've found with the mulch he munches on, that he doesn't really intend to eat it, he just wants to "mouth" it.
I haven't really found a solution to keeping him from eating it. We live in an apartment though, so he isn't outside much, except for his daily walks and potty breaks. I once heard that humans "crave" dirt when they have an iron deficiency. Maybe the pups want more iron??? I have no clue. ha. I just think it's funny that he think mulch, rocks and dirt are the best thing in the world. Wish they were safe to eat. Then I wouldn't have to buy treats! |
I thought I would just share this with you. Rosie was always eating dirt a day never went by without her mouth looking very dirty. Well since I've been having loads of issues with her and changed her diet, the anxiety/stress has stopped so has the dirt eating! I think they do it when there stressed because Rosie is very relaxed now and it has stopped..................... |
It's a natural way that animals detoxify their system, certain substances help neutralise/absorb things.
A bit like having kaolin, to settle a dicky tummy. |
Can i ask - what did you change Rosie's food to? |
I have read on previous postings as well as the latest Family Dog issue I rec'd in the mail. They can have a "mental" disorder called "Pica". This is were they can eat a variety of odd things: rocks, dirt, sticks and many other things. Some which can be very harmful to their system. It states that it not due to any kind of deficiency, it is they just have this psyc. disorder, which many out grow. If you look it up it is very interesting. I came across it when I was trying to figure out why mine did this. She is very healthy and all. Then we kidded that our OES has a mental problem. I ran this by our vet as well. You just have to watch them. Mine is 15 mos and has not out grown it yet. Anyone else out there come across this disorder? |
