Pre-planning for Gardening season with Kody...

Since Kody has been finding all kinds of things that I had no idea were even in my yard (possibly some from a recent wind storm) and bringing them to the door I'm wondering what I'm in for when I start the gardening season. I have large flower beds all the way around my house, around the pool, around the decorative pond, and a large vegetable garden in the back. So far he has managed to fall through the ice and into the pond 3 times since the end of December. Don't worry the pond is decorative and is roughly 12'x8'x42" kidney shaped...he is too large to drown...however I'm sure my Koi's were freaking out when he came in on them. Funny, how they are so smart but yet so slow to catch on sometimes...you would have thought he would have learned his lesson the first time he slammed in to that frigid water.
I have had to go put up all of my resin garden statues otherwise he somehow gets them in his mouth, tosses them into the air and they end up missing limbs or have holes busted into them. My solar frog no longer has a solar bar on it thanks to his need to throw things, he does seems pretty upset by that because now when he goes out at night it no longer lights up for him  My garden hose hanger has been pulled partially off the wall, my guess is that he was pulling on the hose again. I now have to go outside with him every time to protect him and my property from any harm. He has numerous holes dug in the back garden...I swear it looks like we were badly hit by a meteor shower, or possibly a major case of crazed rabid moles, since the holes range in various sizes  . So anyone with any suggestions for this please feel free to respond. I never had to worry about this with Molly because she never bothered anything. All she wanted to do was chase squirrels and lay right by me to supervise while I worked on the yard.

I know how you feel--Baley never bothered anything--he just enjoyed the pool, the flowers and the garden ornaments from afar---then Baxter hit the scene. Within a few months it looked like there had been a war in the backyard!
He dug holes to China and piled all the 'heavy' garden ornaments in new places. He regularly destroyed the pool toys and tools----
We tried most everything and even had a trainer work with him in our yard. I will say that it helped a bit--but not much. They are never in the yard alone for long periods of time but he could do a LOT of damage in a short amount of time. He is now 3 and he is much better--so with us it just took 'time'.
Even now when they are out in the back yard I am continually checking to make sure that everything is in it's place. Good luck--we are planting flowers back there again for the first time this spring--and hope they make it through the summer.
My dogs do not dig, but last year I lost half my fruit crop to the rapacious Toby, who also taught my older dog Charlie to jump up on all the lower branches on my apricot and peach trees until the fruit fell off. Green, ripe, it didn't matter to them-- it was all a feast for both of them. When the fruit was finally gone, they attacked the vegetable garden picking many of my tomatoes while still green. They didn't like the ripe ones, they just punched holes in those and spit them out. But they ate the green ones with relish and brought the rest into the house and dropped them on the kitchen floor for me. Unfortunately, I have a preference for tomatoes without big tooth holes so the crop was mostly a total loss. I also caught Toby enjoying the Jalapenos too, so there wasn't much in the way of fresh salsa in the house last summer unless i bought it.

Looking forward to another season of gardening with the sheepdogs.
It is in their biological "time clock" to start "digging to China" about this time of the year. I think it is because, in the northern parts, the ground is thawing and so they can move the muck a little quicker. They must have heard there is a lot of fun going on down there for all of them to be so persisitant with their holes. Many will even lay in their mucky holes while they rest between digs. I think they are having a "spa" moment so their skin will be at it's best upon their arrival in China.

Oh regarding the moving and trowing of your garden decor....didn't anyone tell you that Sheepies are decorators and get bored easy so are always finding new places to put things?

Good luck with your garden.....
