We are kind-of in the same situation. I really need a new vacuum, but we only have 2 rooms (spare bedroom and office) with carpeting, so I hate to spend a ton of money. Is the Dyson really worth it? |
I still like my Eureka The Boss Smartvac.
I know we had a discussion about vacuums awhile ago. I have a house full of old shaggy carpet, a farm and 5 dogs...and a husband. Mine gets a workout!! |
Dyson. I have 3 Sheepies, two long hair cats, and a husband that has yet to remember to take his filthy shoes/boots off at the door. I live in a town where the wind blows ALL the time and deposits a great deal of dust.
I've had a Dyson for 2 years and will never have another vacuum. It's amazing how much filth my vacuum finds and sucks up. |
I bought a Kenmore Quick Clean, 12 amp awhile back for the kennel. I have runners on the tile floors in there. It works just great. Goes close enough to the tile that I can even vacuum the tile if I'm lazy & not wanting to get the shop-vac out. I liked it well enough that several months later, I replaced my Hoover on the main floor with another one of the same! 3 bedrooms, hall & large living room. It does great on those carpets too. One thing I really like is if I decide to use the attachments, they are on board & all you have to do is move the hose & they are ready to go. No flipping levers or buttons from "carpet" to "attachments". They have hepa filters, easy to change, & are bagless. I got mine on sale for $79.00 at Sears. Our house has 3 OES living here (one shaved down, one mid length & another in a specials coat) as well as another that comes for grooming on a regular basis. The dogs do get to go into all the rooms of the house. One other nice thing......you have 30 days to decide if you like it! If it doesn't perform as you like, you can return it! |
I have had lots of vacs (3 in 4 years) I've recently bought a Dyson and it is the best you can buy.
You can get them that vac bought carpeted and hard floors so they are worth having. Just don't be suprised at all the dust they pick up on their first few outings! |
Actually, the Dyson is NOT the best you can buy. Consumer reports has several vacuums listed before it that out perform it, and all were cheaper. In fact, last time we checked ...it was like the 10th one down.
WITH THAT SAID ............yes, the Dyson IS worth it, and if mine died tomorrow, I'd buy another one. I've never been more happy w/a vacuum. My husband always said we'd never pay that much for one, but I think he understands now. |
I had 3 dysons! One has just been thrown out as the hose broke and it is just totally worn out. The one I use downstairs is the best one, but the upstairs one doesnt clean the bedroom carpet as I would like, so I am going to get a cheap bagless cylinder for upstairs. then i have this small bagless I got from a car boot sale (like a garage sale) that cleans my sons bedroom floor a treat! |
Do NOT get a Dyson! They just can't handle dog dirt, even breeds who don't 'shed'. By far the best thing to get is a Henry, and buy the foot with the spinning brush. I got my foot separately on ebay. The suction is super, you can stick the filter in the washing machine, you can also buy other filters which have charcoal in to reduce doggy smells.
The cable is very long so I can do my whole house, upstairs too, without moving sockets. The motor is twice the size of normal vacuums. The Henry is cheap, with an industrial size motor, small body but 9L capacity, and will work for ages without overheating, it's designed to work for 8 hours straight. I have used mine for 5 years (I'm a cleaner!) and have one at home too. I have vacuumed building dust, all the hair from grooming, other peoples houses all day and they have never failed. You just need to keep the spinning brush on the foot free of hair buildup which is easy because it's detachable. They both work just as well as the day I got them. The bags are HUGE so you change them less. You can use it bagless too, but will need to wash the filter more often I think. It's lightweight, quiet, and comes with brushes etc. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and find this the easiest vacuum to use, the spinning brush makes it easy to push on carpet or hard floors (unlike the contact head which comes as standard) but that is easy to use on hard floors. Henry on Amazon |
I've gone through so many vacuums it's ridiculous.
The latest I used was a dyson, not the animal though. It works better than any other I've tried, but not for long enough. They lie when they say it doesn't lose suction. |
I'm surprised! We've had one since before we got married (early 05) and it still operates the same! I also don't have the animal, but feel it picks up all the hair. |
I have a Kenmore that I've had for over 10 years and it just keeps on trucking. I'd love it to die so I can get another one but I just can't see tossing it when it works great. The only problem is that it isn't very good on bare floors so, for my next one, I want one that goes from carpet to wood seamlessly (or at least well!). |

No. I don't really like my one year old Dyson animal. My sister has had one for years and is ditching it and buying a new vac. we also have an Electralux Oxygen - (one upstairs one down stairs) and like that much better - actually hubby wants me to switch them around and bring the oxygen downstairs - we use that vac more. The dyson is cumbersome and really doesn't seem to pick up any better than (maybe not even as well as) the Electralux. The Oxygen needs bags and i am okay with that - cleaner and neater to throw out a bag than a cloud of dust from emptying the dyson. Of course they are both about the same price. I think Consumer reports recommends the one Marilyn mentioned as more cost effective than the Dyson. |

Yep!! and I have asthma which is why I have 99+% hepa vaccuums and then that dust !?! the bags are a bit pricey - but I don't need an inhaler to empty the mess |

Dust is my achilles heel. When the allergist was doing the "prick test" to see what kind of reaction I would have to common allergens, he had to give me some oral Benadryl and got both a Benadryl and epinephrine syringe ready! That is why I am thinking about one with a bag. Thanks for all of the input! |
well if the meiles are out of your price range (anything that costs as muich as one of the dogs - not goingto happen here ) check out the oxygen - we originally went with that rather than the dyson because it was better on allergies. we got the dyson later when our "old" upstairs vacuum died. and then the oxygen went upstaisrs as the old vacuum. I do think we are going to change the rotation - I really like the oxygen, if hubby notices the difference there must be one |
Don't get an Oreck, they are terrible . I'm also in the market for a new vacuum since some little furry white creature chewed the cord off my old one At least it wasn't plugged in. |
I've had many different kinds over the years and won't have anything BUT a Dyson anymore! This house is fully carpeted and when i've had the cleaning crew come, i always go back over where they have been witht heirs with them saying NO NO We've Already done that, and they are amazed at what my Dyson Animal picks up! I have a kirby sitting in the garage......... i use it to pick up the rocks from the puppy pen that get brought in...... |
We love our Electrolux Oxygen. Carpet and wood floors alike-- it does a good job. Hated the Dyson we had.

we had a kirby growing up - it was amazing!!! I had forgotten about it |
I love my Oreck. It picks up well, is very lightweight, and has charcoal bags for allergies. |

I have heard of this....Rainbow, but just briefly. Has anyone seen a demo or actually have one? I believe I overheard someone on TV talk about how they can't wait to have theirs delivered after it was demoed at their house. |
I have a Rainbow, and I do love it. It works wonderfully, but it does get tiresome having to fill and empty the water tank. I haven't used it in a while due to a limit on how much I am allowed to lift. I have a Eureka Smartvac that I use every day, and honestly, it does just as good of a job as the Rainbow at picking up stuff off the floor. It is not bagless, but changing the bag is not a big deal. I use the Rainbow on occasion when I have the extra time to spend on the water tank. That is the biggest drawback, you can't just plug it in and go for a quick vacuum, you have to set it up. So for my everyday or "quick, hubby just called and is bringing so and so home for lunch" vacuuming, I use the smartvac. When I wanna get down extra deep or the pollen count is really high, I use the rainbow. Once we move, if we have a two story, the rainbow will be downstairs and the smartvac upstairs....even though the house will be hard floors throughout, I prefer to vacuum instead of sweep. |
Vacuum Purchase Update
We bought a new vacuum last week, and we realized that it was the FIRST new vacuum that we both have had! We decided on the Eureka BossĀ® SmartVacĀ® Pet Lover 4870SZX. After all of the suggestions and research, we picked this vacuum based on many features. 1. Cost - it was $138 + change at Sam's Club (exclusively) 2. It had a bag and HEPA filter. I have a SEVERE allergy to dust along with asthma, and the bagless vacuums wouldn't help either of them. 3. There is an attachment that has a brush, made for the stairs, upholstry, and PET HAIR! It really does work too. 4. When the brush-roll gets to the point when it won't spin or is too wraped up, it is really simple to replace. 5. Not too heavy. 6. It came with 8 replacement bags. After I put it together (pretty simple!) it was AMAZING! I realized that I have never had a vacuum with real SUCTION!! Another plus was that I used the brush attachment on our sheets that collect dog hair prior to throwing them in the wash. It reduced the time I had to spend on "de-dog-hairing" them once I put them back on. So far, we believe that we have made a correct and educated decision. |
That is good news.
I love my Eureka - I will have to check into the Pet Lover model when I am looking next time. Sounds like the vacuum I love, but with more features. Mine is lightweight, has the HEPA filters too and still really sucks after several years of hard labor!! I am a vacuum freak, I use mine at least every other day..... Now dusting, that's another issue... |
The rainbow is great. Like cyakins said you have to take a couple minutes to set it up, but thats just a matter of putting water in the tank and attaching the hose to the tank. But the extra minute to do that is well worth it. You can also get the attachments that makes it a carpet cleaner.
The water tank comes in two sizes. I have both and the large one makes a BIG difference. |
I My Dyson!!!
Best purchase ever! |
