Tasker

I wanted to let you all know that we may have finally reached "that time". Tasker has been getting progressively weak in the hind end over the last week, the Vet feels it is a degenerative process. This morning, at the groomers, his back end went out from under him and he has not been able to bear weight since.

We went to the emergency Vet who gave him an accupuncture treatment and told us that she didn't think there was any reason to do any testing at his age. She examined him and could find nothing that hurt and felt he had good sensation in his back end. Same diagnosis as his Vet.

SO I brought him home. He's bee able to poop with DOug and I holding him up but cannot pee. Tomorrow we'll go to our Vet and decide what to do. But barring a miracle I cannot see a cure.

Please keep my bubby in your thoughts. He really is the best dog in the entire world.

Oh no!! So sorry, you are all in my thoughts.
:ghug:
Oh my... :( I think Tasker has been one of those dogs everyone was attached to here ...being that you/him have been in our lives for so long. I'm sorry to hear how he is doing, and I'm sorry about the decision that lies ahead. You guys will be in my prayers, and several hugs to Tasker. :ghug: We're here for you...
Ginny, I'm sorry to hear this news. I'll keep you and Tasker in my prayers. Remember, we have big shoulders here to help carry your load.
So sorry, Ginny! He really is the last of the old timers.
At least Norman and Drez will be looking out for him when he arrives.
:ghug:
So sorry...When I first came onto the forum, I remember reading about Tasker..I feel like I know him...My thoughts are with you... :ghug:
:ghug:
Aw, I'm so sorry Ginny :( . This is the worst thing about having a dog :ghug:
It may be worse in Tasker's case, but Winston had the same problem last May. He got a cortisone shot at the ER vet, which gave him a 100% improvement in 12 hours. That lasted 3 weeks, during which we gave him no anti-inflammatories or pain meds, and once his system was cleared we eased into Duramax, upping the dose every 2 weeks until he got to his maintenance dose. He's still weak, but he has had 10 months so far that I didn't expect him to have. Just thought that might be an option to consider.

I hope he's not in pain. Hugs to him and you too.

Thanks, I holding out a bit of hope that my Vet will try steroids. For some reason this Vet thought it would be useless.
We all love Tasker, he's such a fine boy. It's a rotten shame these guy are with us just a dozen or so years. We are hear for you :ghug:
Ginny and Doug love to you both and special hugs for Tasker, know exactly how you feel, making that decision is never easy and you keep hoping they will get a bit more mobile. They have there good days and bad days and it seems eventually the bad days outnumber the good ones.

Sit down and think is he still having a good quality of life, still has his dignity, is he happy and comfortable.

So hard with our beautifull golden oldies and just so hard to know when it is time.

Thinking of you all at this time in Taskers life journey, my heart fills up with sadness at the thought and what you are going through at the moment with your darling man. :(
:ghug:
I am so sorry...it is so tough.
You will all be in our thoughts
:ghug:
Oh Ginny...
Tasker was one of the first sheepies I remember reading about when I joined the forum, what a good friend you have had in him! I am sending you hugs, thoughts, and prayers as you go through this difficult time.
I'm very sorry that you, Doug, Ty and Tasker are going through all of this.

Joan and I are sending hugs to you all.
I am so sorry to hear this about your Tasker boy. :(

I too, read of Tasker and Ty, so sad that it will be just little Ty.

I was just there 3 months ago, sadly these beloved dogs of ours never live long enough. :(
Oh, Ginny, this breaks my heart! I was teary-eyed when I read your first post, then when I read Mandy's response of Norman and Drez waiting to greet Tasker, I just lost it.

We never really fully get over losing them. The pain subsides but it's always there, even if only to a small degree. For that reason, I'm so sorry for what you're facing now.

Lisa's right - you need to objectively (or as objectively as you can) sit back and analyze what Tasker's quality of life is now, and what it's expected to be even with treatment. I swore I would not prolong Drez's life for my sake only, but guess what? I did anyway. We all do.

We're here for you anytime you need us. In the meantime, a big hug to you, Doug, Tasker and Ty for your trying days ahead.
Sending prayers and hopes for Tasker and you all :ghug:
I'm really sorry to hear about Tasker. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Ginny, I am sorry you are facing this decision. We are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.

:ghug:
I'm so sorry Ginny.
Ginny,
You and Tasker have been on my mind all night...
I am so sorry as I know your pain.

Just a thought I had, my first sheepie gal was on Peroxicam.
It was to slow the growth of cancer but, also helped alot with pain.
It helped alot more than any of the others.
Just wanted to share in case it may help.

Again, I am so sorry and you will continue to be in our thoughts :ghug:
Like all the others I too, became very sad when hearing of Tasker's condition. He is one of our own and we all love him.

A classy old guy whom I often referred to as the Cary Grant of the forum. A description you liked.

I'm so sorry you are going through this Ginny and Doug. May you find courage in your heart and know we're all here for you. Hugs to you all.

Marianne
I'm so sorry you are going through this difficult time :( Big hugs to you all :ghug:
thinking of both of you today ..hugs to both of you
Tasker and Ty :hearts: where a few of the first dogs I grew an attachment to, here on the forum. I delighted in all of your tales regarding them. I have often wondered how they where doing. I am sad to hear of the situation that you now face with Tasker. :hearts: Hugs to all of you in this difficult time. :ghug:
Thank you everyone. I carried Tasker outside this morning and he was able to stand long enough to pee, which was a big relief.

I am waiting for 8:00 and the Vets office to open.

Laying down you would not know anything is wrong, he is bright eyed and happy and eating like a pig. He played with Ty this morning, he just cannot stand up :(
We are thinking of you today. It is so hard, especially when the dogs act as he is doing. It's like they want you to remember them as they always were. :ghug: to all of you & especially to Tasker during this trying time.
Oh Ginny,

I am so very sorry you are going through this, BIG hugs to you and Ty and Doug.
My heart and prayers are with all of you.
Oh, Ginny, I'm so sorry. I hope the vet has some good news. But either way, I'm thinking of you.
I'm so sorry.... I do think steroids are worth a try, they certainly can't hurt... lots of times it gives them a boost so they can feel good again even if only for a little while longer.... although that is usually to give us a little longer, not really them.

You'll know what's right tho.... whatever you decide :ghug:
I hope things work out best for you guys. I hate to hear things like this. Hugs to Tasker.
Thinking of you today....big sheepie hugs to Tasker :ghug:
:ghug: To you all. I am thinking about you today.
I'm so sorry. This has to be so hard.
We are home, and Tasker is with us.

My Vet does feel it degenerative hip and back problem but wants us to give some heavy pain meds a try. She feels that if we can get the pain level down and keep him quiet for a few days we might keep him going, COMFORTABLY, for a while longer.

The Vet yesterday was ready to give up. My Vet said not so fast. I'm hopping I'm not just delaying things but I do need to try.
:D Dear Ginny, So glad your vet would like you to try pain meds. When Bentley went through the same thing, he did have a remission for about six months before he was unable to walk. Best wishes.:ghug:
Of course you need to try the pain meds first. Hopefully it will let Tasker feel good enough that he can walk a little, even to just do his business. My thoughts are with you - it's all too hauntingly familiar.
Hang in there Ginny, sounds like you have a caring vet and you will know in your heart what is the best for Tasker
I am so sorry you are going through this. We truly never have them long enough. Just know my thoughts are with you at this very hard time Please give Tasker a sheepdog scratch from me. :ghug:
So sorry--our thoughts are with your family and Tasker.
My heart goes out to you and your family. Big hugs for your sweet boy.
I'm glad Tasker is back with you. I truly hope the pain meds can help him stay around a while longer...we love you and tasker!
This morning there is definate improvement. He walked out to pee, we put the sling on him and just helped a very little bit. When I took the sling off for him to pee he stood without flumping to the ground. YEAH!

Trying to keep him still, which is hard since he has always followed me everywhere.

What I have learned this week is that despite the fact that I have been telling myself for most of the last year that the end is in sight, you are never ready for it to come. I will not be able to handle this with grace and dignity but rather great hysteria and weeping

Nobody handles this with grace and dignity. Ever. How can you?

Just keep on treasuring every day. Great to hear about the improvement. :ghug:

We have all been there. I hope the pain meds will continue to work and you will have more time to spend with your sweet Tasker.
I'm so glad he is home and having a good day!
Glad to hear that Tasker is having a good day....here's hoping there are many more "good" days ahead!!! :ghug:
You guys are still in my thoughts.
Ginny -

I'm really glad that Tasker is showing some improvement on the pain meds. That's encouraging. I do hope that it lasts. My thoughts are with you.
Glad he is doing better and he got to come home!

Right there with ya, pal.

SO glad Tasker's showing improvement; hope it continues for a LONG time! :ghug:
Ginny, my thoughts are with you. I'm glad he's doing better and you got to take him to your own vet.
Please know I think the world of you - hand in there and love him like you always do.
