Which rescue did you get him from? I know sometimes rescues can help facilitate foster care for their dogs in a situation like this, so please do contact whoever you got him from- they probably have some good resources you can take advantage of! |
Well, I got in contact with the humane society that we adopted Sprocket from and they were not very helpful. I couldnt get very much info from them about any organizations or rescues that would be able to help me out. I'm at such a loss. I just dont know what I can do. |
To be honest, it's a rare rescue who can help arrange longterm foster care, only because most of us are so strapped for foster homes ourselves. Wisconsin has three regular foster homes, two dogs already in foster, when in one recent weekend we got calls from people wanting to surrender five more due to divorce, or have kids, no longer want dog, the usual. All in one weekend is just bad luck, but it happens.
Then you really have to scramble. So with that in mind, you're kind of hesitant to tie up what few foster homes you have for an extended period of time. That said, this forum is probably the best place to put your request out there. Maybe some nice person roughly in your area would be willing to help you out. I've seen it happen before. Fingers crossed for you. Kristine |
Does Sprocket get along well with other dogs and/or cats? I'm sure that would be helpful for anyone interested to know. |
Is there any reason why you cant take him with you for the year you are in Belgium?
You can apply for a European Pet Passport which if he is up to date with rabies etc you should have no trouble getting for him to go with you for entry into Europe and visiting other European countries around Belgium. Might be an option and maybe easier then trying to find appropriate foster for that length of time. Being a rescue I would be worried about another home for that length of time then a change again back to you when you return from Belgium. A lot of upheavel and different families for the dog and a lot of adjusting and re-adjusting again. Just a thought. |
I thought I remebered Sprocket that deaf sheepie from Ohio.
Going out on a HUGE limb........I will take him. We talked before about him, I have a deaf sheepie so, we have the experience. When are you leaving?? Marty will be in Beckley, WV at the end of April for a show and I will be in Blacksburg, VA in May for my sons graduation from Virginia Tech. (my deaf pup will be with me on that trip) Please feel free to contact me and let me know. (My mom will be there next week if it is urgent!) I know it is hard but, I promise you I will love Sprocket too! |
WOW! That is nice of you. I hope she comes back and sees this!!!!!!!!! |
well it seems like everything is going to work out very well with donner's mom! I'm so thankful for this website. The people here are so amazing! |
WOO HOO!
Everyone is on the same page with the duration of the fostering? Just want to make sure because it sounded like "forever" in the reply. |
It did sound like I thought forever but, I know it is just temp.
I am not looking to adopt another.... |
Yay!
I hope this all works out well for everybody. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, put down everything IN WRITING so there will be no misunderstandings. Please consider and put in writing at least the following things (off the top of my head): The length of the agreement. Any compensation to be paid. Who will arrange and pay for transportation. Who will pay for veterinary care and grooming, and how often and how much should be done. Also what threshhold of expenditure would require consent... Medical emergencies. What constitutes an emergency and when best judgement should be used and when contact must be made. Licensing. Brand of food and food costs. What happens if the owner can't claim Sprocket as expected (perhaps stuck in belgium for a month or a year, etc.), what if the owner comes home early. Indemnification.. although who for what I'm not sure. I will say that Joan and I fostered for 4 months and giving up the dog was not easy emotionally. We never had any thoughts about keeping the dog, but it was a big loss for us when we delivered. Also we had given very frequent updates and emails and calls, and after we delivered, the communication reduced quite a bit which was disappointing to us. I would do it again, but I'm not sure about Joan. |
I am with ya on the contract....I babysat Herman for a
few months but, she could not keep him so we found him a wonderful home! I have a lot of my foster's for MONTHS. Pancake has even been here a year next month. So, I know how easy you get attached..... We used to pet sit for Quin, I hated to see him go home. Maybe it will work out that Sprocket can go to Belgium too |
Hi,
Such GREAT news about finding such a wonderful sponsor for the year!! Just wanted to let you know, JUST IN CASE, you are still wanting/ trying to take Sprocket to Belgium with you, I have a good friend who's husband works at the US embassy there and I'm sure I could enlist their aid to help you get the info/ paperwork/ etc. involved to help take him with you. I know what a very difficult decision that can be. We are actually moving to Bangkok, Thailand this summer (my husband will be at the embassy there) for three years and, after MUCH agony, thought and millions of questions, we have decided to take our sheepie with us (although I am very much dreading the plane flight for her)! I know it is a hard decision and, in the end, sometimes it is just not possible to bring them but I wanted to give you another option --- just in case. If you are interested please let me know and I would love to get you in touch with them. Otherwise, I'm certain you have a wonderful foster for a year! From what I've read on the message board, it sounds like Sprocket will have some great playmates & a great OES foster. Good luck to you in Belgium and have fun! |
This is absolutely fantastic! I love everyone! |
I have gone all warm and fluffy inside! love the folks on this forum.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx |
I know all is set by now, but if I were taking a job in Europe for a year I'd make a great effort to take my dog with me.
It would be a great adventure for your dog, and he/she can keep you companionship in a new country. It also gives you a leg up on meeting and establishing kinship with other local dog owners, dog parks, pet clubs, etc. Plus, in Europe you can take your dog on the subway and ride intercity trains! Now that's civilized... |
