I have finally found a OES puppy. I need help. I have been reading books about crate training. I need to know if anyone put their puppy in a crate when they first brought their puppy home? What is the youngest age you put a puppy in a crate? |

I HIGHLY reccommend crate training your puppy. Though ours was a big puppy (12 mths) when we adopted him and began crate training, it helped SO much I can't even explain it. I know its hard to leave them there when your gone and listen to them wimper as you walk away but it will save your house & your sanity in the long run. Plus it gives the new family member a place to feel safe and secure. Our's still sleeps there- we find him taking naps in the middle of the day in his crate

Woof was never crate trained (he's now six months old) - The worst thing was that initially he chewed the occasional piece of furniture at night, and had the odd accident.
From talking to people it seems this system is far more popular in the States than in the UK. Many people swear by it, but sheepies are very intelligent animals, they want to please, and theres nothing you can't achieve with patience and love. (having said that, we had to have Woof sleeping in our bedroom for the first couple of weeks - he sounded so mournful being left alone at night!!!) |
It has been a little while since your post...so hopefully you have already figured it out. For those new puppy owners. A crate on the first night home is a good idea. Even if he/she cries. Don't forget a few soft toys, maybe a hotwater bottle and an alarm clock. It will eventually be the puppies den and place the puppy goes to relax and have some down time. ANd...if you show your OES a crate is a good idea to get accustomed to when they are waiting to get into the ring. Also. many people put their dogs in a crate when they are traveling in a car. It is by far safer then just throwing them in the back seat. Hope this helps! |
Yes we started crate training the first night he came home. He has done really well for less than 2 weeks here. He whines a little but a little correction stops that. he gets a treat if he gets in it on his own. the longest time he spends in it at one time, other than at night, is half a day while I am at work.
he is doing really well w/going outside. he is also letting us know he wants to go out. sometimes he just wants to go out & lay in the grass. |
