Clippers for Beginners?

Hi there,

I was searching on the forum to see which clipper I should get. I only saw good recommendations on Oster 5. Is that the best thing for OES, in your opinion? This will be my first time clipping him myself, so I am a bit nervous. I want to make sure I buy something that works, so he is not traumatized at the end.

Any other advice you can give, like direction of the cut, etc? A website about it would do :)

Thanks!!

Jocelyn

Oster or Andis brand are good. I always clip in the direction of the hair growth. I use a #10 Blade for the private areas & in between the pads of the feet. A #3-3/4 blade for the all over body shave if the dog is mat free. If there are mats you can't get out, use a #7 blade. It will cut a little closer but will go under the mats. To get a nice smooth, velvety look, clip, bathe, dry & clip again.
I wouldn't rate the Oster clippers, I use Andis professionally and they work great wouldn't be without them.

Following on from what chsheepdogs if you wanted the coat left longer there's always the 3/4 blade which will leave the 19mm very easy blade to use.

Be careful with the clippers any loose skin go very slow and you should be fine.
Post some pictures when you've done it
Thanks! I fond their website. Can you tell me which one you have?

What is the lower speed good for? I found 2 models, one has 2 speed (3400 and 4400), and one has one speed (but at 4500). I don't know which one is better?

Thanks!
Karole
I have bought the laube and they are great they run faster then the others. You zip right through their coats. You can ebay and read up on them.

Marilyn,

How do you get your dog to let you shave the private areas and between the pads? My dog finally relented to let me use the clipper on his back, upper legs and chest. I had to scissor the face, ears, lower legs and private parts, so they are short, but look a bit choppy. And how long will it take for the choppy parts to grow and even out?

Thanks!
OK it took a couple of weeks, but I finally finished it (well, as good as it's going to get). Not too bad for the first timer... I really wonder how his other groomers got to clip his face!

Some photos... too funny!

You think he wants his hair back? It's in the bag.

Just thought it's funny to see his leg hanging. Still had lots to trim off
