Teach Your Dog to do THIS!

Mulligan has a new behavior learned. He is the bestest sheepie ever -- so trainable!

Right now I'm working on a new one: "Open". I still have to (usually) give him a physical clue, but on the open command he will -- open his mouth! :o Now I just need to give him that lion-head shave down cut, and invite siegfried and roy over! 8)

I can't wait to show the vet :D :D :D

SOOOOOOOOOOO............HOW did you begin training this (what is the physical cue)????

It sounds like a fun trick for my therapy visits!!!!!!

:D :D :D
you can train any spontaneos behavior by just saying good "whatever" whenever you capture it. I taught Morgan to bow by doing this.
Well, I wanted to look in his mouth one day so I started by holding one hand on top and across his snout, saying "open" and opening his mouth and praising "Good open!!". As the bottles say... Rinse and Repeat.

Now he will open it about 3 inches, maybe a bit more. Not quite enough to see way in, but now when I tell him to open I can physically open his mouth a lot wider so I can have a looksee without him squirming away like I was trying to feed him poison.

Mulligan is also a huge yawner. He yawns quite a bit. Really huge big show-me-the-Grand-Canyon yawns complete with gaping mouth and stretching flews at the end. A really satisfying experience for him, I'd imagine.

When he yawns we've been starting with "Good Yawn!!" but it's awfully hard to induce a yawn on command in dogs. In humans, it is not so hard! You're probably yawning just reading about this! Thinking about praising the yawn with "Good Open!!" but not too sure about this. It's really a different behavior.

(I yawned twice while writing this.) Oooops! Make that 3.

I agree, Ron....My Beardie Cosmo, is a natural yawner, with a huge, noisy yawn..I have been 'training' this for the past 3 years...EVERY time I hear him yawn..I say...GOOD YAWN!!!.... Now I can say to him...YAWN...and it's soo funny..he will stare, like he is concentrating..and then...he'll do it!!! This does not happen ALL the time, but more and more often...

I knew a dog who could sneeze on command...now THAT was impressive!!!!!!   BUT....I didn't like the method the owner used to train it......
I read somewhere that dogs yawn to tell other dogs or people to calm down. Stop stressing
I can yawn just reading the word....

Turid Rugaas describes this is in her book Calming Signals. Some dogs yawn when they are stressed, but may also use the yawn as a way of calming others down.

In other words, if you drop a hot iron on your bare foot and jump up and down screaming and your dog sits there and yawns heartily in your face, she may not be telling you that your (predictable) screaming and hopping around are boring her, rather to please calm down
