Breeder Info

Hey,

I'm really new at this but hoping you guys can help me. I'm trying to search out a new OES addition to our family. We have one but he is slightly mixed and we actually rescued him. It was the best decision of my life. Now we are looking for a girlfriend for him. Not for breeding (he is fixed) but just as a pal. I've been trying to find one i can just love and not worry that i'm helping a puppy mill or getting a very sickly dog. My mother seems to think this lady seems reputable but i dont know, I guess i'm a little more skeptical because i dont think ive seen one person advertise yet that says they are a puppy mill. All the same she only wants 400 dollars for OES puppy and is in Wisconsin. I want to post the link here so if anyone knows of this breeder then can let me know. Or if you just have an opinion on it thats a little more educated then us. So far I've read a lot of advice and did ask her to tell me what breeder the parents are from but no response yet. Is there anything else i should ask or check out? Thanks! - N

I followed the link - but it is for puppies in Maryland.

Doesn't sound that great. People with serious OES do not care what color the eyes are - that is the last thing they would be saying in the limited space in the ad. Mom and Dad on the property is another possible negative. Not always, but most of the time a BYB. Just have 1 male, 1 female and they make puppies and sell them.
I don't see anyone listed in Maryland with the first name of Kimberly as a member of OESCA. Also, I hate to say this but $400.00 for a pup is a dead giveaway for a backyard breeder. Any responsible breeder would have to ask more than that just to cover the cost of the breeding & health clearances. If you are interested in not helping out a puppy mill or some one just breeding for $$$, please check out the breeder referral list on the Old English Sheepdog Club of America website

www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamerica.org

There you can research reputable breeders by state.

You should ALWAYS ask to see the OFA certificate & Cerf Certificate at a minimum. Again, if you go to the website I posted above, there is a link that is very helpful on what questions to ask a breeder.
Ditto, ditto.

Are you in Wisconsin or close by? There are many decent breeders here. I can't think of anyone who has a litter planned, but it's not like I quiz all of them every time we meet, so you never know. Feel free to PM me if you have questions about anyone in particular. I know the OESCA member breeders. Frankly it would be hard to go wrong with any of them.

There's also rescue....I know some nice rescue dogs as well. Ironically one of them came WITH papers from a questionable WI breeder and is probably an OES/poodle mix, though she looks pretty OES. I met her yesterday (my vet is a club member and fosters), she's about 18 mos old and she is a doll.

I have a young foster girl myself, but she falls into the "experienced and training obsessed owner" category

Not to talk you out of getting a puppy. Good for you for doing your homework! The OESCA breeder referral list is an excellent place to start.

You're right on -- $400 can't begin to pay the expenses of what we refer to as a "reputable breeder", so your money will go to either someone making a living by selling lots of pups or to someone who just thoguht it was a good idea to get a couple of dogs together without spending lots of time and money developing a good breeding program.

Now, all that said, my guy is a rescue who got his start at a goat farm... we think, and he's the bestest dog in the whole wide world. Of course his head is mis-shapen and he's not a good representative of the breed and we hope his hips will stay good, and, and, and. But we love him!
You just got the best advice available.
Thank you for the advice. Since lurking here for a couple weeks, I have looked at the registered breeders listed and have got some really great offers for some slightly older OES's that are retired from showing. My drawback has been some friends saying I shouldn't spend so much on a dog. But I just had to hear from other lovers of this breed that I should follow my heart and not so much the pocketboo.k when deciding what's right for me. Oh and if anyone know of someone in the NW area of the country let me know. Thank you!!

Well not spending so much to purchase a dog could hit your purse strings big time in the longer term of things, especially if this breeder has not gone to the expense of Health testing before breeding a litter. $400 could turn into thousands in the overall longer term prospect.

You pay for what you get, cheap OES then every chance the sire and dam have never been health screened so chances are the puppers could in the long term have problems. Some are lucky through BYB's and dont have any problems, but if you read around the forum so many others have had long term problems and at a huge financial & emotional cost, some even lost there puppers due to bad breeding and unhealthy pups being sent to them.

If at all go with a registered breeder or an older dog they want to re-home or even rescue as well, they screen the dogs so you also know exactly what you are getting eg.temperament wise or if there is any other issues with them.

Best wishes in your search, be patient , ask tons of questions and research, research research before deciding on which one
