How high can adult sheepies jump-in regard to fencing

One side of our back yard fence is lower than the rest. The neighbor just told us that Chiquita jumped it today :( 8O He picked her up and put her back in the yard :D (What a good neighbor!!!)

I have a fence man coming to give us an estimate. But I want to make sure that it's high enough. What height fence would you recommend?

not sure, I have an e fence. Also I don't leave them out for long alone. But, I have heard of some jumping a fence that is 6 feet - they can climb too.

Dogs ended up in forster care - not sure if they got there by being lost - or the owners realized they weren't outside dogs adn decided not to keep them.
Kerry

A six foot fence will hold most in if they can't climb it.

We got two youngsters into rescue who regularly jumped 5 foot fences, we were told. My fence is only four foot high, but I went out with them regularly so they never got bored and felt a need to travel.

Oh, and youngsters are more likely to be fence jumpers not just because they are more curious etc but also because they physically are more likely to be able to get over it. As they start to mature and fill out the bulk gets harder to get over a higher fence. Now, many OES from non-show lines don't grow into much bulk (not talking fat here) But even so you rarely hear of any OES over the age of three who are dedicated fence jumpers.

And then there's Mad's brother who is one of the biggest boned OES you can imagine who decided at the age of six and a half to try his paw at leaping his breeder's wooden four foot fence and literally took the top six inches off. 8O

He's fine. Fence has been fixed. Hopefully breeder will know not to leave him out on his own any more.

Well the fence guy came right out :D Ahh, the only advantage I can see to the economy as it is.

HE showed us that actually the fence was easily bent back and there were three big holes dug and the fence pushed up. I was out with her yesterday before bed and that was not there 8O

My husband was home and checking on her every 15 minutes for any of the time that he was not outside with her. How she managed to get it dug that fast is beyond us. We've put cinder block in front of the holes for now. But that old three foot fence will have to go.

She LOVES the neighbor on that side of the fence. I'm not surprised she tried to get to him. I'm just surprised how fast she managed to do it!

Fortunately we have very nice neighbors all around us. We've taken her to meet all of them (just in case she ever gets out) and she's microchiped so hopefully she would never be lost for very long at all. :? :(

I'm going to also get an estimate on an e-fence. I wonder which will be more effective?
Go for conventional fencing if you can afford it. Sounds like Chiquita has a lot of distractions around her which can tempt a dog to run through electronic fence as if it doesn't exist. Mine have done it several times. I know people who have actually installed farm-type electric fence wire at the top of conventional fencing to deter their dogs from jumping or climbing over.

Be more concerned about Chiquita getting hit by a car or stolen from your property rather than wandering off to visit your neighbors. It only takes a second for tragedy to strike. We have e-fence but never let out dogs out of our sight in the yard. Period. We have a few empty lots between us and our closest neighbors and are not in a high-traffic area. The e-fence is only a deterrent, not something we rely on. I'm holding out for "real" fencing but hubby is afraid I'll drag in more foster dogs. 8O
I have a fence "jumper"....she loves to see what is
going on next door!
We have a four foot chain link but, she flies over it if need
be.
(that is why we have to leash walk even in the yard :()
Well, Devyn will be going into agility soon to work off the
"jumpy paws"
She too, just goes into my neighbors yard to steal their dogs
toys BUT, we don't let her have them..
Even though my neighbor insists on letting her keep them!
Sometimes leash walking is an only option.....
OR if you find out where she is escaping, as you said!
Good Luck....sheepies can be crazy!
My dog run is 4 foot chain link fencing. I've never had a problem with any of the dogs living here or staying here temporarily trying to jump it or climb out. But then there are always multiple dogs here & they seem more interested in the other dogs (even the ones that are seperated) or in staring at the door to see when I am going to let them in. 8O Cathy & I did have one girl that used to climb her 6 foot chain link fence. I used to take her to shows & show her alot & once she was finished, she equated me & my voice with a ride in the van to the dog show! We'd find her sitting patiently next to my van or in it (if the doors were open) when I was ready to leave! Must have thought I was takingher back to Ohio & hopefully a dog show! It must have been something hereditary because her daughter will do the same thing! The solution in both cases (and places, as we placed Mom with a wonderful family after her show career & daughter is in another show home near me) was using a board on board privacy fence or the new vinyl fencing. They can't climb that. Luckily neither one was a digger!
One of mine sails over a 4 ft fence - fortunately ONLY if the kids are in the next yard and SHE MUST BE WITH THEM RIGHT NOW.

When I say "sails" I mean that tubby girl can clear it with at least 12 inches under her belly. You would never guess such a portly thing would be so agile.

We put up a 6 foot panel and she hasn't tried since.
We currently have a 3 foot picket fence dividing his area from the rest of the garden and Archie will stand up at it, but has never bothered to try to jump it, even when he has his mad Archie Speedway moments, dashing back and forth going bonkers!
Fencing is a challenge. Had chain link with first oes at a rental house...he was always anxious and running and wore out grass at fence line and eventually created a ditch. Great for Muddy PAWS!!!
Moved to own place and installed wooden cedar 6x8 panels for fence and new oes is not anxious and no worn out path. The only distractions now are birds and squirrels on the fence.
I've had climbers and diggers. To solve both we had to resort to an electric fence.........ZAP! If you don't want to go that route, I understand. I couldn't afford 1,000 feet of taller fence. The diggers have been the most persistent. We've put landscape timers at the bottom of the fence, attaching them to the fence bottom........since the Pyrs could move the timbers with ease.

The last "breakout" we had was Glacier burrowing into our neighbor's yard. She was walking around the garage corner when she encountered out neighbor, a cop. She looked up, sighed, "Busted" turned around, went back under the fence and has never been through since.
Zeke can clear the couch, and it's about 37" tall and 40" deep.
I put the dogs on a cable when I put them outside.
I'd like to put a 6' fence up so both of them can run around together outside, but the cost is prohibitive.

I wouldn't be surprised if Zeke could clear a 4' fence.
My 3 1/2 sheepie easily clears our 5 foot block fence, I didn't think so but sure enough he did!
Max hasn't had an issue jumping 5 ft retaining walls or into the bed of our pickup - right up over the side of it! - don't worry about opening the tailgate.

His dad was a 95 lb old boy that would jump his 4 ft fence all the time (or so we've been told).

I'd get a 6 footer if you're worried about jumping.
