Complete surprise by DH

My DH struggles each year to pick a great birthday gift for me. I know how much sweat and heart he puts into this task, so no matter what the gift, it really is the thought that counts.

Credit where credit is due, he usually picks something nice, but sometimes not something I would have thought of or asked for.

This year, I had to be out of town on my b-day. The night before I was headed out the door, suitcase in tow, when he said stop and put a box from Amazon in my hand. He told me to open it before I left so I would know what my gift was in time for my day.

Well, I'm flustered, trying to get out the door, the last thing I want to do is stop and open a box. But the look on his face said I really needed to take the time.

So, I crack open the box, dig through the packing, and find a brand new KINDLE 2 :!: 8O :D 8O :D 8O

OMG :!: Without a single hint, and keeping it a complete surprise, my wonderful husband pulled off the perfect gift. Just the concept brought tears to my eyes.

Then I had to zoom out the door to catch a flight, without my new toy. :( I had to wait 2 days to get it in my hands. I can't express how cool, it is. My son says it makes me a double geek now that all my excessive reading is done electronically via wireless.

Cool! Do you find it easy to read on? I've been dying to get my hands on one to play with to see if it's a worthwhile investment for me, too (mostly because I don't want to store anymore books!).

ditto - please tell!!!!
Yes, yes, I was just looking at them again last night. How do you download books? I realize you buy them, but then how do they download, is there a monthly charge in addition to the book cost. How are they for reading?
Awesome! We definitely need a product review!
Hi,
You sound like you do a lot traveling like I do. My husband gave me a Sony Reader last year for my birthday and I LOVE it! I am usually on 17+ hour flights to/from Africa about every 6 weeks and for me it has been the best gift ever. I no longer have to carry 3 or 4 books with me (weight!). I can download as many books as I want for the trip, including the latest best sellers, which are always in hardback. The battery life on my Reader is incredible. The last time I was in Africa, I was gone 3 weeks, read 3 and a half books and only charged my Reader once. I also love that I can make the print larger when my eyes are tired or I am in low light. As far as I am concerned I will never go back to "real" books.

Kewl!!! What an excellent gift, although it sounds like it was a day late! LOL

I was wondering... once you have purchased and read a book on a kindle, can you give away, sell or loan it to another kindle user like you could a book?
Wow I'm sooooo jealous, I was just reading about Kindles.
We cant get them in Australia, they wont sell them here. I havent found out why yet. I would have to get one on the dodge, apparently I can pay a company in the US and they allocate an address where it is delivered then they send it on for me. I am thinking of looking into that option.
What a nice gift. I watched Oprah give all of her audience the Series 1 a few months ago...they had the inventor on for an interview. It looks like a great invention. I know you will really enjoy Kendal 2 and think happy thoughts of hubby each time you open it. :D

Happy Birthday!
Ummm I am so embarrased but I don't know what this is. I thought maybe it was something to start a fire  but I know it's about books.
I feel really dumb - I have never heard of this before, could maybe some one explane it? sorry guys

A Kindle is an electronic reader. You download books, newspapers, magazines, blogs, etc.

I spent some quality time with my Kindle this weekend and I love it more than the day I opened the box. Ordering and download to the device is a snap. You can shop from you PC or directly from the device.

The Kindle 2 has 2GB with 1.4GB available for storage. Estimate is it will hold 1500 hundred books. Kindle 1 had a memory card slot which is no longer available on the new model. I think it was too easy to share books. I don't know if books can be shared yet. If they can, the download would have to be sent to a computer for placement on a device.

The device uses the Sprint Whispernet for delivery of information, no charge for service. I anticipated having to set it up on my wireless system before using. BUT, the moment the device turned on, it logged into Whispernet. :D :D :D No fuss, no muss. If you have a subscription to a newspaper, blog, etc, the minute the device turns on the latest edition arrives. I understand system coverage is good in the US.

The screen pixel quality is good and the fonts look true. Type size can be increased to need and the page refreshes at the same rate as a paper page can turn. Size/weight is great, perfect for a briefcase or bag.

The device only accepts product from the Kindle store at Amazon. After a long look at the store, I found more books and subscriptions than I need or would ever use. Pricing was good (better than paying for paper) and seemed to be competitive.

I was chatting with a friend in Beijing and he said they can't get Kindles because CDMA, the cellular format used by the device and supported by Whispernet isn't available internationally. Apparently Amazon is working to find providers outside the US. You could still have a Kindle in another country but download would have to be done on the PC and transfered. Amazon just introduced an app for IPhone to use the Kindle store.

I'm sure I'll learn more with the first trip we take together, but I really don't anticipate running into any issue that would make me not like my new reader.

Way cool!! I've been wondering too if they were worth the money and how the subscription and downloads work. Glad to hear you're enjoying yours and bravo to your DH!!
I forgot, the Kindle 2 also has audio capability. It supports audio books and MP3's. I haven't tried that feature yet.

You can get them now! And cheaper too!

That is very awesome and thoughtful of him!!! :)

We bought a kindle for each grandparent last year, and now they give them as gifts to other people b/c they love them. They are complete idiots when it comes to electronics (like me!!) ...but they've figured this out and are never leaving the house w/o it since all they do is travel. I have no idea how they work though, but I don't read enough to want to learn.
Do you like reading on it now that you've had it for awhile? How about reading outdoors?
Six months later, still no complaints. Kindle reads just like a book in all light. I have found the Kindle grey background with black font is easier on the eyes than a book bright white page with black font.
