Portage's traumatic night...

Portage has always been trustworthy and responsible so he is NOT used to be in a room with a closed door. When he is "kennelled" it means he is restricted to half the house. He gets three bedrooms, a den, a hallway, and a bathroom in which to roam.

Then, little Satan arrived. And now the doors are always closed. Hudson (Satan's other name) eats walls...still...so there's no freedom for him.

Gordon (my husband) has been sleeping in the guest room on the main floor at night for the last week or so so that Portage can have the run of the house. Hudson has been sleeping with me because I sleep so lightly that I can even hear his stinky little thoughts. I also wake up instantly, and have caught him many times as he's just about to munch on something of value. (Yes, he could be crated but I can't do all day and all night.)

The other night Hudson starts barking crazily and I wake up like a shot. I'm listening to this dog, barking in the distance. He sounds frenzied, and I cannot understand why his owners won't let him in. Then it occurs to me, it's Portage. I can't figure out why it's muffled and so hysterical.

Now, it's cold at night here, and I am reluctant to leave the warmth and security of my bed, so I grab my cell phone and call our house line. Gordon wakes up, groggy, swears, drops the phone and goes running.

Our poor, sweet perfect Portage walked into the bathroom, knocked the door closed behind him, and couldn't get out. He's not very steady on his back legs, and the floor is slippery so he fell down, and was completely trapped and helpless in the pitch dark. Hence the panic barking. I should also mention that this bathroom is adjacent to the guest room and my husband (who sleeps like a cadaver) SHOULD have heard all of this and NOT needed me to call him.

After his rescue, I sat with him for over an hour but his heart wouldn't stop pounding, and he wouldn't stop pacing and panting. He hasn't had a full on panic attack for a while, but this sure was one. (And, who can blame him?)

So, I broke down and gave him a tranquilizer (he has them for storms, but hadn't used one in over a year, so I gave him a half dose to try to take the edge off). He finally settled down and was stoned for the rest of the night.

When I went to check on him (he was contained in the guest room, door closed, with my husband), I discovered that he had...um...pooped in his sleep (he has some back end weakness already, and with the drugs relaxing him that much I'm not surprised.)

My husband managed to sleep through that as well, but was mad when I woke him up and he realized it.

Now, I personally think that it was Portage's revenge. Since Daddy didn't wake up when he needed him it was only fitting to let Daddy sleep through that, too.

Fortunately when Portage fully woke up (about twelve hours later) he was completely fine and appears to have suffered no long term consequences from the ordeal. Thank goodness.

Awww, poor boy, what a fright. And poor you too.
Glad that he seems none the worse for wear. :D
Poor guy. What a panic. Baloo locked himself inthe bathroom just once while we were sleeping- it's in our bedroom- so i heard him scratching on the door to get out rather quickly. He looked at me like "well what took you so long" walked over to his bed (by our bed), flopped down and sighed great big! I got a giggle from it.
Aw, poor little sheepie boy. I hope you get some sleep as well.
Poor baby, now wonder he worked himself into a frenzy.
Poor mommy! (and Portage, too) :(
Aw, poor Portage! I can't imagine how scared he was, not being able to move and being locked in - poor baby!!
Annabelle did something like that once. i heard this barking and thumping noise in the middle of the night. (Both of my dogs slept in the room with us, no crate). So I jumped up, quite groggy, and realized it was coming from the bathroom. I realized that Annabelle has closed herself in the shower, so I opened the door to let her out. This horrible odor just wafted out, and I realized that she had pooped in the shower stall! And she was vacating the premises asap!!! Of course, i had to clean up the mess, but when I got back to bed Annabelle was snoring happily, worn out from the experience
