Shedding

Our Bella is now 14 months old. She is our 1st OES and is what I believe is called in full coat (never been shaved). I brush her every 2 to 3 days at least 2 hours. I use a pin brush on her (she never has liked the slicker brush) and when in the mood lays pretty well for my version of line brushing. My issue is the shedding. HELP!!!! I have actually tried the shedding pills from local pet store and they did not help. What ever advise or suggestions I can get will be most helpful. The fine hairs are driving us nuts. When I was doing my "research" with many books and sights before making my final decision, all info stated very little shedding. I did not discover this site until after I got her.

they don't shed actually. they do, like all mammals (us included) lose hair on a daily basis.

the only way to completely elinminate that hair loss is to keep tem shaved short (and the the hairs are only shorter when they lose them).
BUT perhaps it would help if you describe when and where you are finding hairs. one site I found when I was looking for OES info years and years ago (and yes the Internet did exist nearly 20 year ago, just not so pretty) made a comment about having to learn to like hair in your butter. Not sure i would notice if it was there these days
If she's shedding really heavily, I might consider having a vet check her out. It isn't normal for her to be losing incredible amounts of hair. We have 2 OES and a Komondor and the only hair we have around the house are the few dust bunny fluffs on the floor that build up every few days in the corners.
Finding the hair everywhere. From the real fine hair to the longer outer coat hair. She can brush up against your pants and you will have hair on them. Enough to where if they are dress (for work) pants, you will need to use a roller brush just before heading out the door.
Summer sheds but she is due for her Easter cut. If I have my black trousers on I have to brush them before I go out. I also find tumble weed along the passage and in the kitchen, you get used to it. She gets brushed at least 3 times a week as well...but I still love her.
If she is losing hair that much, you need to get to the vet & get her checked out. She might possibly have a thyroid problem. I have 3 that live with me & at times had 4 in full coat living here & never have I had one of my dogs brush up against me & leave hair on my clothes. They do not shed as other dogs do. The do lose hair but on a daily basis like humans do...a hair here & a hair there, kept under great control with just weekly brushing.
Same as with Baloo... I have a certain pair of dress slacks that seem permanently covered. I have to roller them when I go out. And my hubby's sunday pants too.
We have the tumbleweeds that like to roll down the stairs (we live in a bi-level) so we are always up then down, then up, then down, then up, then down - you get the idea. Baloo is very much a velcro dog and almost premantly stuck to my a**. He is always right there at my legs. SO all the times I go up & down the stairs... so do his fur bunnies. :D

We sweep the steps every evening, or every other evening. It does seem like there is less hair when we keep him cut a bit shorter. He's due for a spring cleaning soon.
Could part of this be due to blowing the puppy coat? Has the hair loss always been that severe?
I have to say I always use a lint brush when I get to work. Even when I had a poodle I would find hair on me - sometimes it was even the dogs ;)

Marilyn what kind of pants do you wear - teflon :D :D :D

BLUE JEANS!!!!!! :D :D :D :D
I was wondering about blowing the puppy coat.
Tiggy's nearly 13 months old and I've gone from just the odd dust bunny in the corners to lots of hair everywhere and clumps on the rugs etc.
Its nearly all soft coat with just a few longer hairs as she is shedding pupppy coat.
I can brush her today and she'll have matts again tomorrow.

well that is cheating - I don't get hair on my jeans either , my black work slacks - nother story :D 8)
It Seems to have been gradually getting worse over the past 4 months or so. I was wondering if it could be the transition stage of her coat, but wasn't sure when it would actually begin. I read something the other day on another forum site that they will have puppy coat, junior coat and adult coat. Is this correct.
yep and they tend to happen at different times. My guys both got their adult coats around three.

I happen to be lucky & have a job with a "casual" dress code! It's an office but I can wear nice blue jeans & a nice sweatshirt! :D The down side is I'm never gonna get rich there! :( But hey, you can't have it all. And working only 1-1/2 miles from home is great for the dogs!

I agree, I commute 30 miles each way - makes life difficult -getting to night time classes is a big pain - and I will never get rich working where I do either
If you're bruhing 2-3 times a week to keep mats down I agree it's probably just a coat change. Feed her a good quality food. Not sure what's in the anti-shedding pills but maybe trade them in for some Omega-3 fish oil capsules that are great for coat.
If I go more than 2 days for brushing, we are both in for it. I am wondering after reading some other posts if I need to be brushing her every day right now or I am just not doing it right. She is fluffy for awhile when done, but by the end of day (on weekends ) or after sleeping all night, you can't even tell she was brushed.
My thought was blowing puppy coat too. Just to be on the safe side, Consult with your Vet.
Are you brushing her to the skin - or are you just surface brushing?

someone just posted the link to the line brushing post on a thread about a brush - I am no good at getting back and forth to do so - sorry.
Hopefully I am line brushing. I am doing my best to have her lie on her side and I do a line seperation to where I see her skin and then brush. I tried to do as I viewed in a post on another forum site.
to some degree it could also be caused by indoor heat sometimes that will dry them out a bit. Buit I also think a few hairs on black work pants- to be expected.

Never hurts to check with your vet but that is how Tiggy is at 12 months old.
I brush her and by morning she all scruffy looking again, with new matts forming already.
Where's Lisa, she's the grooming whiz? Her Babs and Syd are just 2 weeks older than Tiggy and she was saying that they are blowing their puppy coats and needing a lot of brushing at the moment. She didnt mention how much hair loss though.

This can depend on coat type also. My first show dog (girl) didn't have the best of coats. I would groom her out & within a day or 2 she looked like she'd not seen a brush in a month. Her coat tended to mat quicker & more too. I have a boy now that has a much more "correct" coat. I can groom him out & almost a week later he still looks good. Hardly any mats too, even little ones. But in neither case did it ever appear like they were losing alot of hair . I never had that much more hair out of one than the other. Are you using a pin brush without balls on the end of the pins?
OES dont Malt or shed like other breeds, I do find that during the transitions especially from the baby puppy coat to the junior one they do seem to blow a bit of fluff around the house (Undercoat), I call them dust bunnies that accumulate in the most extroidinary places, like under the couch when you eventually move it to vacuum underneath  .

Coat quality too makes a difference as to how much they do tend to blow coat and to how they look and stay looking fluffy and nice after a groom, I also say too Climate as well, plays a role in coats as well.

Mine in the warmer weather not as much undercoat, in winter thickens up heaps better.

Having two the same age at the moment the bitch with a crisper/harsher coat coming through, she looks like a ragamuffin after a day or so with the transition. The boy, slightly different coat on him, slower changing, woolier and nice break coming through on the guard hairs but an easier coat to look neater for longer after grooming. The crisper/harsher coats take awhile to settle and to look better for longer after grooming.

Another thing always best to groom a bit more regulary through the week while they are transitioning as the matt fairies breed real quick and just makes it easier at this stage and not such an ordeal for them while the clump and matt fairies are active.
