Rebecca is having oral surgery on Thursday.

Rebecca, who is 9, has 2 tumors in her mouth. The vet is hopeful that they are epulids, a common benign tumor in dogs. He will remove them and do biopsies. He may have to remove some teeth too.

The growth came on really fast. It's been less than 2 weeks. It's within a couple of her upper incisors. I thought maybe she just irritated her gum by chewing on something, but it got nastier and more swollen each day. I did not notice the second tumor as it's past her last molar.

I'll let you guys know how she makes out. Just feeling bad that she's going to be in pain in a couple of days. She has a low threshold for pain...

Soft mushy food after and big hugs to Rebecca and special hugs for you too.

Hope Rebecca is home and recovering :ghug:
Hoping for good results and a speedy recovery.
Thanks everyone for your concern & kind wishes.

She didn't have the surgery until around 4pm. Just got home with her about an hour ago. The vet was able to remove everything okay without taking any teeth so that was good. The biopsies don't come back until next week. He's most concerned with the lump above the incisors since it came on so quickly.

She's quietly whimpering but she did drink water and eat a little food, so she'll feel better in a few days I hope. Stitches stay in for 14 days. She doesn't get more pain medication until tomorrow morning. :( I think I'm going to go medicate myself with a glass of wine...
Deb so glad to hear rebecca came through the surgery all OK, keeping fingers crossed all is well with the pathology when the results come through.

Thinking of you both and give rebecca a gentle hug from us
Poor girl....

Please give her an extra gentle rub from me.
Poor kid. I hope the hours until her pain medication dose fly by quickly!
Poor baby! Its good that she drank and ate a little.
I'd be going for the wine too. I feel so bad for them when they cry. :ghug:
Please give that precious girl a hug from me. I'm glad she came out of the surgery okay, and I'll keep my fingers crossed for a good prognosis.

 I hear you.

Hope she's feeling better today.

Well, we got some bad news today. Both tumors are malignant, squamous cell carcinoma which is pretty agressive. Prognosis is not good without being invasive. (like partial jaw removal, radiation, etc.). The doc removed everything, but he said the cancer will come back quickly, probably in the same places. Given her age (9), and the arthritic condition of her spine, we will just spoil her like crazy and do everything we can to make sure she is comfortable. Vet agreed that he would probably be doing the same thing if he were in our shoes.

Very bummed as Rebecca was feeling better enough from her surgery recovery today to romp around in the snow with the boys... Glad that we will still have some healthy time with her before the tumors come back.
Oh no!! That is such a bummer, so sorry to hear that's its not good. :ghug:
Oh Deb I'm so so sorry. Please give Rebecca hugs from us.

:( I am so sorry, give Rebecca a hug from us.
I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice. my dog Yoko was diagnosed with
Acanthomatous epulis. It is a cancer on her lower jaw in the front.I was told by 2 doctors that if they remove some of the bottom jaw there is a 95 percent chance of success. If not removed it will invade the bone. It is not metastatic. Dog is 7 and six months, very healthy ,sweet and beautiful.

Please help me make the right decision. I am afraid of what the quality of her life will be like.

Cathie
Hi cathie (guest) been through the same type of epulis with my girl. Part of the jaw bone and teeth removed and she has done great. Better to have that done, sounds drastic but with the jaw bone only like a slice of the bone is taken as this type of epulis is agressive if cells are in the bone so they do that under where the growth is excised as well.

Read this it is all we went through plus photos, I was beside myself at the thought of loosing part of the jaw bone, but better then being diagnosed with oral cancer (tumour) and mastitsising fast, this stays confined to the jaw but can grow and invade the whole jaw if not removed properly, prognosis is great and early and smaller it is better off having it done.

Best wishes, uncomfortable for them for a little while, usually soft mushy food for a few days and they send you home with pain meds to help while they heal up. Do register here, it's free, and post how it all went, wishing you both all the best and again even though it sounds drastic they do make a full recovery and cope really well with a few missing teeth and that slice of jaw bone taken. We call brie gappy now as her tongue can hang out on occassions from the gap of missing teeth. Everything will be OK
well........ poop!
