Anyway I like to wash him every 2-3 weeks. Soemtimes its is just a quick wet the coat and rub him off when he gets in the mud or something. I keep his coat shaved because where I live it is warm, and I think it is better for him. I would love to let his fur grow, but just think it would make him miserable. Anyway he absolutely hates taking a bath, and it is a big ordeal to get him in the tub. A month ago the vet said he weighed 120 now. He bucks and fights me and has even growled at me when I try to put him in the tub. Once I get him in there he is okay for the most part. I noticed last time that his tail stayed up while he was in the tub so I dont think its a fear thing. I have even tried to lure him in using marrow bones. He loves them but no luck. Any suggestions as to how to get him in there???? I had him groomed a month ago and the woman said she didnt think she was going to be able to do him. Took two of them to get him in, but said once he was in he was fine. |

I am no help but just wanted to let you know that Tiggy is the same. I've bathed her ever since she was a puppy and if anything she's just gotten worse each time. Last bath I had to drag her in to the bathroom let alone the bath. I too tried treats but she wouldnt go past the door way despite her favorite biscuit on offer. It was kind of funny to watch her stretch her neck as far as possible trying to reach the biscuit without stepping foot past the door way.
I havent tried a groomer though I've just decided that I'll do it myself and be calm and firm and hope my back survives the wrestling. I live in hope that lots of treats and praising will eventually convince her that I'm not trying to murder her. I was very exasperated though when she spent a good 15mins racing through some sprinklers on the off lead park one morning. It was cold, the sprinklers were cold and so was I by the time I convinced her to give up. Why is warm water in a bath scary and cold water in a sprinkler not????? |
try giving him treats in the tub when you aren't bathing him - even drop a few in and let him discover them on his own daily (if he is really afraid you may have to leave a trail leasding up to the tub).
Its a trick our behaviorist told us to try - of course our latest puppy was a newf and he needed no encouragement to get near the water! |
If getting him in the tub is his issue, maybe you could try a step stool like this http://tinyurl.com/dken42 coupled with the treat idea kerry suggested? |
I just reread your post - you might want to try cooler bath water - dogs are much more sensitive tot he heat in hot water than we are. |
Thanks for the tip. I tried that too, she just shivered more I just keep it luke warm.
I think the sprinkler/bath thing is about control and getting away. With the sprinkler she could run in and out barking at it, with the bath she's stuck there till I'm finished. On the other hand maybe she just likes being a stinky, dirty dog. |
How high are sides of the tub? We have one deep and one shallow tub. It is much easier to get them in the shallow tub, they can get in without any assistance. Our dogs prefer that one.
For a quick cleanup, we have used the shower stall. Our shower isn't the biggest, but the do fit. It was much easier than moving everything away form the tub and washing the walls was much easier than cleaning the deck area around the tub. |
have you thought abut bathing her outside if its warm enough there? get a dog bath, keep it near to the ground. theres this one http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product.asp? ... pf_id=1202
it has a drain hole at the end, not underneith, i put mine on a stand though and drilled a plug hole into it, its non slip too. you can get a sucker that goes onto the bottom of that bath which you attach a collar too so they cant get away. good luck just wish i could keep mine out of the bath, his started jumping in our baths if the door isn't shut properly! not nice! |
