well the standard (I believe) calls for the lower end of the height to be 21" for bitches so she may indeed be on the too small (standard wise) size.
She also probably hasn't finished growing yet though at 14 months. they usually have a second (and somewhat final) growth spurt any where between about 14 and 18 months. As long as she is intended as a pet, it isn't an issue. Depending on where you got her - your breeder might like to know. do you have her on a raw diet to deal with the Pano? |
She sounds like a little female.
My male is on the not so huge side too - as well as his siblings. I like the smaller size, and he is very active as well. He is 24 inches (at the withers) and at a current high weight of 73 pounds. His sister Martha (my daughter has her) is smaller too - and she is about 22 inches and a bit over 50 pounds. Her other 2 sisters that I know are small too. Kristine may chime in with their heights/weights. They are almost 3 years old nowand are very active, healthy dogs. She will grow a little, but not much. I haven't had any personal experience with pano, and how much that may have affected her growth. Welcome, and post some pictures of your girl London. |
My (little) Heart is 19 months old and is about 23 inches and 68 pounds...I think of her as 'petite'... |
Summers dad reckons she is a short arse! I knew she was going to be a lot smaller when I saw her Mum, but I dont mind...x |
Thank you all for your responses. I was worried about her. She is the most loving dog I have ever had. She thinks that she is a tiny dog and climbs into your lap all the time. I am not worried at all that she will be small just was concerned. I actually bought her at a pet store not because I believe in those places at all my daughter wanted to go in and take a look and I could bear the thought of her being caged up there. I live in Southern California so OES are not very popular and it is the first one that my vet has ever seen. Thankfully I live in the mountains where it is a lot cooler and we have lots of snow which she appears to love. Thanks again everyone. |

Be glad she's tiny. I have three 95-100 pounders who do the same thing. |

They are almost 3 years old nowand are very active, healthy dogs. Ask LeAnne to reweigh Martha, please. None of my dogs have seen 50 lbs since I don't know when Her sisters are also 22" at the withers and about 60 lbs give or take when agility fit ( ahem ) The entire litter was very consistent, though the final sister is evidently some genetic mutant at 25" at the withers and 80lbs - though reports of her height have ranged from 24-28" at the withers, and anything from 70 to 90 (!!!) lbs, so I'm taking it with a grain of salt for now except that she's supposedly and hopefully on a diet..! Dawn - we should be able to see her in Rochester next year to see what's actually what. She was spayed before her growth plates were closed so that may have had some impact on height, but she is also rumored to be QUITE overweight. (My friend who oversees her is also an OES agility person and about goes into cardiac arrest every time she sees Ms Lard Butt ) And, yes, I too like the dogs on the smaller end of the spectrum for their athleticism and endurance. 20" is tiny, but had it's advantages KB |

I see that and raise you one 140 LB Newfie "puppy" with the same habit Okay maybe I exaggerated one of th ethree is only about 70 pounds. |
One of my girls is tiny too... she is 5 years old, only about 21" at the shoulders and weighs about 50 lbs |
When Sami was 11 months she was 55 lbs when she was 2 she came in at 75 lbs. So you never know how much they grow. Blue at 16 monthe was 76 lbs. |
Baloo is 19 mos old now and weighs 95 (+ or - a little) so I'd be thankful for your petite princess.... I'd think as long as things are going well and she's happy, healthy and energetic there's no worries. |
Assuming she is fully sheepdog, you've got a real petite girl. MO is in this class. At approx 14 months she was this size, maybe 5 lbs more. In her youth and young adult she was consistently around 50-55 lbs. Now as a 10 year old she can slip to 60 if I let her.
A friend years ago said I'd love a smaller sheepdog. She's right. MO can do things a larger dog, like Jack, can't do. She is graceful, speedy, runs (ran) for hours without stopping (now has arthritis in a front paw), curls up into a nice ball so she doesn't take the whole bed. She stands on us and doesn't threaten to squish us. MO was a rescue so no idea where she came from....as usual I suspect the worst. |
Tonks and Luna are both 16 months old now, and a little over 60 pounds each. Luna was a runt when we got her home; she was about half of Tonks' size back then! But we remarked that Luna was always 5 pounds smaller than Tonks. When they were 5 and 10 pounds it was a huge difference. When they were 50 and 55 pounds it wasn't as noticeable. And in the last 10 or 12 pounds Luna caught up and they are now about the same size.
Luna is the shrimp next to Tonks: and this is at a year old; you can see they are almost the same size: I'm still holding out for a "growth spurt"; I'd love for them to get to 70 pounds! Otherwise I have some petite sheepdogs. What is the breed standard for females in the US? |
My Abbey is 19 months and only 60 pounds WITH HAIR. She is not too terribly tall, but all the better to snuggle in the recliner with! |

She weighs 55 pounds. I can't wait to see Suzi. Especially as she is the only one of the litter I've never met. LeAnne says the same. |

She weighs 55 pounds. Wow! She really is a peanut. Shouldn't be hard to convince Marnie to let LeAnne spay her. It'll be good to see her too. The last time I had my hands on her she was still at Marnie's and fat as a pig. Nice work getting her back in shape, LeAnne! Kristine |

Kristine You have to remember she has no muscle mass. She is an apartment sloth. And with her having he ring issues we aren't going to change that for a while. Dang school getting in the way of my dog time! Poor thing just has to lay around and eat! We will get better some day soon! |

I think of Abbey as petite, until she decides she is sitting in the chair with me, then UGH. |
Has anyone seen the mug that is for sale on the internet regarding oes dogs. It is my situation down pat. It's a pic of an oes sitting on an armchair but out of its sides are two arms and legs, the owners. The caption underneath reads. I LOVE MY LAP DOG . One of my dogs is tiny, but when she wants to share she can really pack a punch when you don't expect it. When she lands on top of me at 3 a.m. I rarely think, hhhmmm, you are so much smaller that the others!. YET...I still don't stop her from doing it the next morning!!!! |
I want one of those mugs. Tiggy thinks she's a little lap dog and does flying leaps from across the room into my lap. Havent weighed her lately but she's definitely heavier than the 31kg of 3 months ago.
Yes Lisa I hear you, OES think they are itsy bitsy little feather weights. |
I think Dutch is petite too untill she sits on me . She is 74 lbs and I'm 89 lbs |

Dang school getting in the way of my dog time! Poor thing just has to lay around and eat! We will get better some day soon! Well, if foster gets placed in the next couple of weeks (fingers crossed) Marty can come stay with me for a while. If it's a lack of socialization, I can fix that. If it's a temperament problem, I need to know that. None of her siblings are in sterling shape at the moment either. Winter is just hard that way. Kristine |
