Barking Fits

Our girl LuLu is pretty quite normally but she has these little barking fits for no apparent reason. She gets plenty of exercise and she is house broken and lets us know when she wants to go out but these barking fits are very annoying. I saw on another post that someone filled a water bottle with pennies and would shake it when the dog barked, anyone else have any ideas how to stop that. She is a great dog otherwise.

Have you tried squirting lemon juice or lime juice into her mouth when when barks? Has to be done as she is barking & just a little bit....not afterwards. Dogs have short attention spans for correction. I have found 5-6 seconds after the fact & they have no idea what they are being corrected for. I had a girl that was what I called a "nuisance" barker. If she was sitting still, she had to tell me what was going on in the world. This worked with her about 90% of the time. After awhile all I had to to was grab the little plastic lemon or line & she shut up & made a face at me! 8O
I would SO love a solution for this as well. Ignoring, correct as they do it, giving them something else to do, practicing w/treats nightly when people come by.... all hasn't worked for us. I think we've just been forced by family members to cage in different room or throw the dog outside. Works best for us.
What are the dogs barking AT?

When Tucker barks at something outside I've found that most of the time if I go to the window and look at what he's looking at, it helps. I'll say, "Thank you!" which is my version of "Hush!" or "Quiet!". It's like he just wants me to recognize what ever he sees.

The other time Tucker will bark and bark is, believe it or not, when he thinks something is either out of place or alive. We moved this baby gate from one room to another and he went to the new place, which was beside his crate, and would bark and bark every single night. Even if I took it out and showed him what it was (which has worked before) he still barked. I guess I had it in the wrong place! He's stopped doing it now, thankfully! He'll also bark if something moves on it's own (if something gets knocked over or if the wind blows it) but will stop if I go touch the object and hold it out for him to sniff.
Here is what I did with Obe and it worked GREAT. I had two old pots/pans when the barking would start and not stop grab the pots/pans and bang them together. It took twice and Obe learned he did not that sound, just as I did not like the barking for no other reason than attention. The third time all I did was move towards them and he shut up instantly. Haven't had to do this in at least a year or more.

I was lazy and did not feel like filling the plastic bottle with change.
my dreamer barks at the can with coins lol he barks when at play with other dogs and not when he just playing with duffy baarks at feeding time or just barks to bark.. i need to try the lemon juice
We went through barking fits as well. Oliver would literally stand in front of me and bark, for no apparent reason. We tried redirecting his attention, ignoring, and the water bottle. None worked. Finally one day, my husband got frustrated, and put him in "time out". Oliver went to his room for 10-15 minutes to settle down. It worked.

He barked at us because he wanted attention, and we taught him that barking for attention is not acceptable, so if he barks at us like that, he gets no attention at all.

That is hte method we always have used and it works very well. no fun if you get totally ignored.

I would never use the squirt bottle and the coins actually scared my one dog and I think made things worse.

Of course if you have a barker who barks in the crate or time out spot - it may require a greater intervention.
Just sounds like boredom to me, "Hey Play with ME", maybe the mind needs something to do?
Baloo generally only barks when these things happen:

- someone rang the doorbell (and I'm ok with that cuz sometimes I don't hear it if I am in the back of the house)

- someone walked down the sidewalk near our house - usually walking their dog (this is the one that bothers me when he does it. on the whole it's not a big deal though because it's not contantly)

- The cat is into something Baloo knows is "off limits" - a plant, the kitchen counter etc. (sometimes the kitty drinks out of Baloo's water bowl & Boo will bark at him)

So I am NO help in this area. I can only think of one other time -- and he will bark at us -- if, say, the boys are playing around and pushing on each other, or I try & tickle them or soemthing like that. Then it's more if a HEY I WANNA PLAY TOO but never is a ot of barking...
We tried the coins and that didn't seem to work, but we tried the pots and pan banging last night and oh my, she stopped instantly and actually became almost docile. While we got the reaction we wanted it seemed to make her so scared that it changed her whole personality. We might try to bang them not as loud and see how that works. It definatly changed her behavior.
moon ray does it to and i will let him out and then back in or tell him to go get it it works till the next time and i do get my excrise that way. Yes it's just to bark i guess cuz nothing is there. I do the window thing to i get to his level and ask him what's there what is it then he licks me and runs to get a toy so yes just something to do. So0metime he will think I'm on the ground for him to play with LOL
Kudos and thank you for all of your advice. The pots and pans worked like a charm. In fact I feel bad that I think I traumatized her. Now all I have to say is pots and pans and she cowers. But no more barking or jumping.
