baby oes. blind and deaf. need some help, please

Hi. I'm new here, and really need some help. I have a new oes puppy, named Odey. He is about three months old. I also have an ACD/Cattle dog mix. Odey came to us about three weeks ago, and he is blind and deaf. (well, almost. We are finding he has a minimal amount of sight and hearing. He seems to hear very high-pitched noises, and his one eye has a little less than 10% vision.)

I am touch training him the best I can. He knows "sit" really well. That's about as far as I've gotten, as we're working on potty training and not biting people. (He's not biting to be aggressive. I think that's how he sees people). Anyway, I firmly hold his snout, and he is coming to know that it means, "No".

My question for the evening is: Can anyone help me in regard to home grooming? I have been researching about how to clip, and am interested in keeping him in the puppy cut. I think that style would be best, in regard to him seeing and getting around better. I seem to be finding that that cut seems to be 1-2 inches. I'm not looking for him to have really short hair, and am thinking maybe just a little longer than what I'm finding. I think I can play around with the length, but need to know what kind of clippers to get, and also what settings for his cut. I'm not really going to clip much now, but I do need to focus on the eye area, as his hair is already starting to grow around his eyes. How horrible to have the wee bit of sight taken away by hair!! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Welcome to the community!

As far as the training goes, sounds like normal sheepie progression! Good luck! LOL It will take a while.

We keep our pooch in a short cut all year long, letting it grow out a little bit during winter. We keep the area around his eyes cut shorter, we use an Oster clipper with a 3F blade and go from about 1/2 to 1 inch below his eyes on the snout, right up between the eyes stopping at about the eyebrow. Also right along his eyes from the nose outwards. This keeps the eyes completely clear for a good month or two.

Thanks for taking care of this very special puppy!
I cant really give advice on the grooming as mine is in full coat. Others with way more experience can help in that matter. Just wanted to say welcome and congrats on the new addition to your family. Also it is awesome that you took this little guy in and are willing to accept him with his special needs.
Welcome - and also to your little Odey.
Good idea to keep him in a shorter coat. I don't clip my guy (yet) either. In the past, we had a groomer friend trim our previous OES's.
A clippers will give you a shorter look (but it grows so fast!) and you also can get a longer look by scissoring him.
I have a friend who has a dane who is totally deaf and has vision in just one eye. They are in my obedience classes and they have done wonderful together.
Hi. Just wanted to say thanks to all who replied to my haircut question. I think I've settled on the Oster clippers, and am now trying to figure out the blade types. But, for right now, I'll be happy enough to get his nails clipped. I actually dremel, but I don't think method matters much when you're dealing with a 3-month-old little guy who can't see or hear. Basically anything that involves his nails scares him. sigh... another adventure for this week. But, hopefully we'll get there. I felt like I was in a rodeo tonight; trying to wrestle him into good nailcare. He won tonight, but I have confidence that tomorrow brings new hope.
Thanks again for the advice. I'm sure I'll be back --- with new adventures of Odey.
welcome to you and Odey :D we would love to see some pics of Odey when you have time. I'm pretty sure if you look in the grooming forum you will see what size blades work best. :D
WELCOME ODEY from Tal and Abbey.

You will find everything you need on this web sight. I got a OES from an auction and was helpless 1.5 years ago. The people on this site are wonderful and full of knowledge. No question is stupid in their eyes. Good luck to you and your little one.
Hi. Little Bear - . Just so you know: Working on uploading the photo of Odey. I guess you can say I'm a little technology-impaired. Tried to get one up, but think I need the advice of the computer guy, who right now, is watching t.v. Will eventually get one up, but for right now, just know he pretty much looks like a bunch of other little guys on this site. His eyes look a bit different, though. He has one bright blue eye, and the other looks straight up to the sky. I think that's where he has his field of vision. Thanks to all who have given advice. Boy, I sure didn't know what I was getting myself into; with all the grooming and such. My other dog is a border collie/ACD mix. I throw him in the tub for a good scrubbing, and brush him when we both feel like it. No fuss/no muss. Odey, on the other hand, WOW. I have to figure out the blind/deaf thing, and then figure out how to teach him that grooming him is really a good idea. I'm sure that will take only about 10 years or so. lol
My no longer little, one year old still thinks grooming isnt a good idea. I'm glad you've figured out that it could be a while before Odey thinks much of being still and being brushed.
I know what you mean by rodeo, Tiggy taken to kicking me or rolling on her back and waving all four legs in the air when she's getting sick of it all.
Hey, to Mim. Since you're used to wrestling with your dog, maybe you could pop by and groom mine... lol!!!! Odey's only 3-months-old, and I bet you could still outmatch him....... And, since his sight is so impaired, I bet if you're quiet enough, you could sneak up and make him look fabulous in no time!

Abbey wasn't thrilled at first either. I touch and rubbed her all the time I could, even her legs now are a favorite for brushing. You are cmoing "from a hole" with his disabilities, but I'm sure with patience you'll get it.
In all honesty I think it is the grooming that gives us such a strong bond with these dogs, you'll probably find that it is even more important with a deaf and blind dog, as it will be very much of its life

I agree. Abbey comes to me when scared and lays her paw on me. I really think the closeness and touching is a huge thing. I think it will be extremely important for a blind pup.

Think I'll pass on that offer thanks.
There's no sneaking up on Tiggy. She'll stick around for a bit if I keep offering the odd treat but even gets sick of that. She is shedding puppyish coat so I'm doing a lot of brushing so I'll forgive her for now. :D
