This morning there was a cute little Staffy who decided he was Tiggy's best friend and that the best game was chasey. Well Tiggy was definitely up for that game. The Staffy also thought that the stinky, black, ankle deep mud puddle was the best place to run around in. While I was doing the "look how much fun I'm having" song and dance to convince Tiggy to leave the game of chasey in the mud I heard a very brief altercation behind me. I could hear that it was Rastus but by the time I turned around it was all over. For some reason a Border Collie didnt like Rastus and had a go at him, luckily Rastus is a big sook and ran. Eventually I got a very stinky, black sheepie back on lead and we went for a LONG wallk while she dried off. It was then that I noticed a big gash in Rastus's shoulder. Fortunately the vet said it didnt need stitching and Rastus pretended not to notice the big antibiotic injection, probably because they always feed him liver treats at my vets so he thinks they're good guys and a dalmo will forgive a lot if there's tasty treats. I think its going to have to be no more off lead parks unless Wayne's there to help supervise. Otherwise I'm looking for a set of eyes in the back of my head. |

OH MY.... I am glad that there wasn't enough damage to need stitches. Wow. Poor Rastus. |
It can happen so fast too. I wonder about balistic jackets for our guys at the parks, something that covers body and neck, they we'd only have the face and ears to worry about |

Ballistic jackets now that's an idea I hadnt thought of. Shame it wasnt winter, Rastus loves his winter coat and wears it to the park every time. I'd be sewing it up instead of paying the vet. |
I have three and often take all to the dog park. My solution is to take a friend with me, I assign her one dog to look after and I take the other two and I will also ask/remind the other people in the park to help me, if a dog poops and I don't see it, please let me know so I can pick it up.
However, the other day I took each dog to the dog park, one at a time and honestly we had a great time. I happened to have plenty of time and it gave me more one-on-one time with each dog. I can't always do it this way, but when I can, I will. I have also had some unpleasant experiences at the dog park. Sometimes the other big dogs will have an issue with Taggart (116lbs) who is a very big dog and a huge wuss. They will try to intimidate him, not a hard task either. Sometimes it's the people who think my dogs are too aggressive. My girls tend to stick close to the gate and want to "welcome" the other dogs to the park in a loud barky way. Iwill admit that it is beyond annoying and I do what I can to keep them from the gate, but since they are not retreivers, they could care less about playing ball so it is difficult. Sure hope Rufus is recovering well from his dog park experience. |
my two almost always play together at the off leash park, so its easy to keep an eye on them by myself. In instances where they go their separate ways, I always call them back to me, and we start over, where I can see them both.
Its good recall practice for them, and it re-inforces that message that I don't like them going too far from view. Once in a while I'll lose track of one of them, and everyone at our park is really nice and knows one another; someone will always say "I saw Tonks over there" Or "heads up; Luna's poop needs to be picked up". |
