You could probably get away with some of the least expensive laptops available. Expect your laptop to go 3 or 4 years. If you spend more money, you can keep from upgrading again for an extra year. Is it worth doubling the price to get an extra year or two? Not likely.
Just make sure that it is comfortable (full size keyboard) and has a couple of USB 2.0 ports. Get a couple of GB of RAM, and the largest hard drive possible. A DVD writer should be pretty much standard, and a blu-ray drive might be nice for the future, but is likely to be a kind of a luxury for the next couple of years. |
My husband and I both have laptops. Both the same. HP's 17 inch screen. I love it. Hard to use our old desk top now. Find your needs and you will be happy.
Good Luck! Let us know what you get. |
we have 2 toshiba satellites (just bought the newest one for our teens 17th bday present last week) i would recommend and Dicks have them on special at the moment too. goodluck |
I personally like MAC products- they're reliable, easy to use and have excellent art/photo programs...
you can easily get a refurbished macbook through apple.com for less money. |
Thanks everyone, going shopping this weekend, will see whats out there now I have some idea what I am looking for. |
We have a Dell laptop for my husband, that I built a couple of years ago, and I have built several for friends on the website. It's my favorite way to go as I can get exactly what I want or need, not so much of the extra crap, and then hunt for online promo codes and save lots of money! Oh, and Dell is one of the few places that you can still get windows XP from if you are like me and don't wanna switch to Vista. When I got my new desktop last year, I didn't feel like upgrading my printer or having compatibility issues with any of my programs Good luck in your hunt! |
I hate HP.
I love Dell, but... their laptops seem to fall apart SO quickly. All the laptops this time around in iraq were dells... not a single person out of several 100 at different fobs didn't have missing keys on their keyboard. So many wanted to switch to Apple. ...but then they missed the customer service of Dell Though they break down (cosmetic stuff) so much, you receive replacement parts like the next day and though you have to deal with customer service that doesn't speak english... they will patiently walk through everything or send someone out there. It's YOU that has to be patient trying to understand them. So in the end... it's Dell for us. |
I have a HP desktop and a Dell and Acer laptops, bought the laptop because I was going to be living in a trailer for 3 months and didn't have room for my desktop I will never buy Dell again, they are the pits. I specified what I wanted in my laptop, (all the goodies, 19" screen, wireless etc) cost a bundle and the first time I went to use it it didn't work, phoned Dell they said it was the hd so would send me another one and I could install my self. Well that didn't work so phoned them again and they said it was the mother board and would send me another. I said NO I wasn't about to try installsing a mb even with their phone help. By the way the help thing was all from India . Got so fed up with arguing/fighting with them went and bought the Acer. Still phoned them every day and finally a couple of months later a new machine arrived. It works fine but the trouble to have them replace a no good machine wasn't worth the agro.Oh and my g/daughter got the Acer and she loves it and I have my desktop |
I forgot to mention - you rarely (or never) get viruses on a MAC. It feels and look expensive - you'll love it! |
I got a Macbook last month, and so far I love it. |

Though I'm a hardcore Apple person, depending on your level of computer savvy, I don't always recommend a Mac to people because the idea of learning to use a different operating system can be super difficult. It's definitely different enough from a PC to frustrate someone without Mac experience or someone who doesn't take to new technologies well! |
We have bought 3 lap tops 2 xmas for kids and one for my self. All were basis. Acer for my daughter $360.00 the small cute ones. My sone and basic Sony which he can play games on for $650.00. Mine was a Toshia Spelling for $500.00 all were on sale and all do what we want mine is mostly for coral painter. We went into best buy and told them what we were going to do with each of them and they sold us what we needed. |
I use IBM (now Lenovo) Thinkpads. Very happy with them. I've had 8 laptops in the last 10 years, and they're by far the most durable. Wouldn't have another Dell for anything. Did like the Sony Vaio and the Toshiba, although the keyboard/touchpads didn't fit my hands correctly.
Try www.cdw.com. Excellent service and pricing. |
