I've been trying to find this info over the internet but havent had much luck finding the estimated cost without having to register through their website each time. And... which company do you suggest? Thanks!! |

Up here I just phoned a company and they asked a few questions re size of house , no of bedrooms etc and then gave me a ball park figure and it was almost right on |
And get the insurance.
When we moved from Oklahoma to New Mexico, the moving van got stuck in a bad rain storm in Amarillo. Our king size mattress and boxsprings were soaked, even though they were in plastic bags. And our grandfather clock was scratched. The insurance made it much easier to get the replacement and repairs done. I didn't have the time for any hassle. |
Yep thats what I would do. Call a local mover that does out of state. They can tell you about the amount it will cost. AND YES get insurance. You won't be sorry. |
It's been almost 30 years since we moved down here so memories are iffy. I remember a lady coming to the house and I walked her thru telling her what we would take and not take. Just by looking she came very, very close to the actual moving weight and expense! I was impressed
They charge by pound and distance plus any additions like what they may pack for you or if storage will be required. The ultimate is to have them come in and pack everything for you and then unpack at the other end. One person told me they were so efficient, they even packed the debris in the wastebaskets! So I'd suggest a major disposal operation before the move to lessen the amount that must be transported. And of course, take the insurance. Another couple had their moving van roll down a mountain side and everything inside came out like kindling. Price?? Expensive. Back then United Van Lines and Allied were the better ones. Now, I have no clue. United moved us here and we were satisified. |
I moved from NY to California, had a great experience with Bekins.
I shopped around quite a bit. Had about 5 movers come and give estimates. I think I got the best deal and was very happy. They even did some of the packing, everything arrived in perfect shape. |
I moved cross country several times, corporate transfers. Moving companies can be more crooked and unregulated than Wall Street CEO's.
Don't rely on the big names, like Mayflower, Bekins, etc. They are franchises and service is differnt in each area. Check with your local BBB. Ask people who have used that specific provider. Call your homeowners insurance company to see if they cover contents durning a move. Purchase the movers insurance to cover any gaps let by your policy. Get multiple bids. All bids must be "not to exceed quoted amount" and that must be in writing on all paperwork. I can't stress how important NTE is and don't let them tell you otherwise. Sheeps over Aces |
thanks everyone!! ill do more research - I want to hire packers too - hpefully from the same place! |
Do NOT sign any bill of lading until you have inspected your belongings and know that they are all there, accounted for, and undamaged.
Do NOT allow the movers to split your belongings into two shipments. In my experience with North American vanlines, it was impossible to get reimbursed for the damage they did to some of our belongings, including an antique desk that belonged to my husband's grandfather and had great sentimental value, nor to several other family pieces. They also refused to compensate us for lost belongings including almost all of the toys that belonged to my 10 year old son |
