OES is afraid of clipper

My Oster A5 arrived a few days ago, but my sheepie is afraid of the device! I did manage to give him a sanitary trim after much persistence, and I've got him to the point where he tolerates being touched by the clipper when it is off. But the moment I turn it on, he starts running away.

Any tips on how to get him used to the clipper? I am planning to shave him down in a few weeks from now.

(Sorry, I meant to post this here, but posted on "Behavior" instead.)

we have exactly the same problem, tried twice but ended up using scissors....hope you have better luck
Do you have a grooming table? (or a solid table that can serve as such? With my first OES I actually used a picnic table. No one ate there anyway)

Once on the table he's less likely to bolt. While he's there you can turn the clippers on but hold them away from him while maybe feeding him a couple of cookies, brushing him lightly, something he hopefully enjoys?

Do this a few minutes every day until he starts to relax about the motor noise. When you get close enough to the time you want to shave him, be prepared to do it in stages, perhaps over a couple of days, so he can have some down time in between. Also ensures that the clipper stays cool this reducing any potential unpleasantness.

And make sure he's thoroughly brushed out ahead of time. That makes it easier and minimizes shave time.

Good luck! I just did my foster a few days ago and she gave the clipper the evil eye but settled into it pretty quickly. Just be very calmly, confidently and cheerfully firm. Contrary to what he may try to tell you, no OES has ever succumbed to death by clipper

Kristine
I am lazier than Kristine - using a table would mean I would probably have to move books or something - but I do make them lie down , just like if I were brushing them. Anytime they raise their head - it goes back on the ground.

I can't say they like the clippers (or being groomed) but they don't run off. They will even grudgingly lydown in front of me now (at three0 when they see me sitting on the floor with the brushes - just takes practice. (
Tiggy didnt like them either. Still doesnt really. I did what Kristine said but it took a lot of time. At first I would just turn them on and wave them around and act like they were a great new toy (yep I felt like a dumby). Then when Tiggy came to check them out I would just let her sniff them. She trimmed of a few whiskery bits that way. :D Then I left them on and lying next to her while I brushed her a few times, then just used them on her a little for the sanitary trim. I have a small blade for between the toes but I've given up, I think the clippers tickle too much on her feet. I've only clipped her once and that was up on a table and I had to give her 2 short walks when all that standing still got too much for her.
