Our Shayleigh spends a fair amount of time on her own as Kathy and I both work. Knowing that, though, we do make sure she gets at least a two-mile brisk walk each day in addition to romping about the yard chasing squirrels, etc. Some days she may get four miles or more as we each will walk her. I have to say there appears to be very little fat on Shayleigh. I wonder, though, if perhaps she may be too skinny. At 50 pounds she is a tad slight for an OES. -John ps - her food is out all the time and refilled reasonably promptly as needed. |

John,
How old is Shayleigh? 50 lbs is light - but she may have a smaller frame. Also - they start to pack on more weight after 3 or so. I think the amount of exercise she gets sounds great! If she's eating enough - then you should be fine. A trim dog is a healthier dog. She'll be much better off when she's an old gal - and she's still in great shape (her bones will thank you)! What has the Vet said about her weight?? Kristen |
John,
We walk Roger, our OES about 1 1/2 miles twice per day he has no fat also but weighs 68 lbs. I fed him Eukanuba puppy food until he was 16 months old (not a magic number he just seemed to move out of puppy mode about then). How old is Shayleigh, if she is still young feed her puppy food. I have always left food out all the time as well and have never had a fat dog. Although the other school of though on the food is to feed them at a regular time after they earn it by sitting calmly. Roger and my last OES Lester eat typically when we eat or wait until after we go to bed. In the end some dogs are lighter than others and it really doesn't matter as long as they are healthy and happy. Chris |
