I've decided to buy some but not sure the best place to go. I know I want channel weaves with wires. So experts...how do I proceed??? |

Well, mine aren't very practical for this time of year...
I bought the kit for the ones that stick in the ground. You can move them anywhere...just not indoors! Currently they are frozen in channels, set up in my yard. I used the excuse that I can't move them in, so we haven't practiced much this year But we have practiced our entrances, which is helpful. Of course, this still is an improvement over last winter when I left them in the garage. I forgot to stick them in the ground before the ground froze for the winter. I got them online - they came with the tips that look like long nails and the caps they are in, top caps, and tape to make the stripes. Also a fabric tape with grommets every 20 inches to set the poles into the ground. I usually just guesstimate. All I had to buy extra was the PVC sections. I don't remember the cost, but it was not a lot. I later bought guides for them. If you look close, you can see the last 2 on the right side of this picture: |
I got mine from Agility Works http://www.agilityworks.com/more.htm#weave
They are not inexpensive (!!), but they were a very nice price comparatively speaking and especially when taking into consideration the craftsmanship and customer service. It's been a few years now, but I still haven't come across a better vendor. I can ask around though. I would ask Dawn about where she got her guidewires. I know you can get them for quite a bit less that from the above company. I did, but now I forget where. Consider what pole spacing you want. I have the 20". AKC allows 20-24" with 22" being considered optimal. But there's a push to make 24" mandatory. I suspect you'll start seeing more of that in the area in the next couple of years and hopefully the current AKC agility advisory committee will make that change. It is SOOOO much easier on our dogs' bodies. In class we have both and I can take Sybil from one set to the other without a problem, so if you have 20" in class you can still practice with him on 24" at home and save wear and tear on his body in the process. Thankfully I am a relative packrat, I found my wires receipt.
They are from Tuffmutt and they were $17.95 for a set of 6 weaves. http://www.tuffmutt.com/ I recently got a set of 4 practice jumps from Affordable Agility - I know Judi has also ordered from them. http://www.affordableagility.com/ |
For a "normal" dog - translated NOT Harry - you may be able to get channel weaves from just about anywhere.
But Harry was quite abusive to our first set of channel weaves. He just plowed through them like the proverbial bull in the china closet. I was fixing them after every run through because he was bending the pegs. The only ones he did not wreck were the ones at school. I asked my trainer where they came from and then ordered some for myself. Then I sold both of my old sets on craigslist. But the new set is a little more expensive due to the sturdiness requirement. In fact I only have a set of six because that was all I could afford. They came from Countryside Agility. I am looking for a sturdier set of wires too but waiting until I can afford them as well. He has broken all the flimisier wires. |

Judi, they used to make metal ones that were about 4" wide and indestructable. Someone probably still does. My guys break the plastic ones all the time, but if it happens at the part where it attaches to the poles that can be repaired fairly easily. KB |

KB Yes we have done many the repairs and they do break where you said. Plus it hurts to snap the plastic on and off thus I would like the metal ones that slide on and off for quick changes. Fortunately, I don't really need the wires for me anymore so much as for other dogs. |
