I started this in 2001 and put it aside cause I was looking for the rest of the yarn.... ooops, there was no more yarn and no sleeves. I found a online knitting community called Ravelry and they have a place you can put a call out if you are looking for something. I did and someone did have enough for me to finish. I have but 3 inches to go on the sleeves and to sew on the buttons and we will have the long awaited wearing of the apricot fuzzy sweater.... close up of the side seam. I don't know how I did it, but it looks darn near invisible to me.... buttons, sorry for the soft focus... |

That absolutely blows my mind. You did that BY HAND?!
AMAZING! |
Beautiful work. You must post pics of you wearing it. That's cool you were able to find the yarn through an online community. |
PERFECT!!!!!
good job. I use to knit but now I have carple tunnel |
My DIL and I bought a teach yourself to knit book and we are learning to knit. But I don't understand the UFO part. And why does it hurt your back? |
UFO's Un Finished Objects.... I started that sweater in 2001... I have a lot of UFO's
Back Pain - Sitting in too soft a seat for extended period of time knitting when I should have been moving around or at least sitting in a better chair so my back wouldn't go out... and hurt soooooooooooo much. Siatica (spelling????) If you don't follow my bad lead, you should do just fine..... Check out www.ravelry.com You have to join to see stuff, but you will be inspired and it is for all skill levels and fiber craft, spinning, crocheting... |
Its beautiful! I really want to learn to knit. |
UFO's I can relate. Thanks for the website. |
I can't believe people can do that!! Can't imagine the time and work involved!!! That is awesome, and I liked looking through all the pics in your album!! If you get bored and inspired, my boys would love sweaters for next year's christmas picture. |
Thanks everyone! Yes I did knit all by hand. I love knitting cable sweaters, the more cables the more I like it. Wait till you see what I started in December, it is really complicated looking, but oh so fun to knit.
I do knit on machines, and while you can knit cables on the machine, I think it would take as much time as hand knitting because of all the manipulation and why when I love to knit cables anyway. Mrs J, I do knit childrens sweaters and like you, I'm surrounded with boys, as Lee and I have 3 grandsons. I love to knit and design for little girls, you probably noticed in my photos some of the designs I have done. these are some baby hats that I have done and have written the pattern for, so if anyone wants the pattern let me know, I have it in PDF format and I will be happy to share it with you. I didn't knit all last year with all that I was busy with, and now I'm in the mood to knit again.... I have plenty of stuff I want to do.... Thanks again for all the positive comments I really appreciate it. If you want to check out my knitting progress, you can always check out my blog at http://www.freshpickedknits.blogspot.com Leave comments and visit often L |
Beautiful work! Such talent. |
WOWZER!! I can't do that - that's for sure.
I know my sister 'used to' knit but all she ever did was blankets.... and hasn't even done that in years... Good job on the sweater. It's lovely. |
Very cool. Way more skilled than me.
Maybe we can bid on some yarn again this year??? |
Gorgeous....I wish I could knit, but it involves using my right hand at a higher intelligence level than it is capable of (I'm left-handed, lol). Crocheting is more my speed. Right hand doesn't have to do much....and I know about the sore back, and I get sore elbows, too. Possibly a stiff neck. If I could figure out how to read and crochet at the same time, I'd get so much more done. Audio books just aren't the same, either.... |
I love the baby caps! I quit knitting about a year ago...... and I have all this OES hair here that i have spun....... and still need to spin!
I made shawls, felted/knitted slippers, mittens and scarfs...... I need to start in again, but fear until i get my shoulder fixed it may be a while. That may be one reason my back/sciatica was hurting too! i'll see if i can't find the patterns/pictures i did of the oes slippers. |
You do beautiful work! I love the hats too. You're very talented. |
Dawn I will be there this year and we can have a bidding war.... that sounds so fun. Looking forward to it! |
What wonderful work you do!
I've knit 2 dozen scarves for my daughter and niece using various patterns, yarns and numbers of strands. Self-taught. For the last two years, I have signed up for an evening beginning knitting class. It finally had enough students for the clas to make. I am so excited to learn the correct way to do this. I hope that I can do cables as good as you do at some point! |
Mom of 3, I thought I replied to you and I'm sorry I must have dreamed it. I want to wish you good luck in the class and I hope your teacher is as good as my mom was to me.
Remember there are no stupid questions and before you leave your first class ask her to teach how to pick up a dropped stitch. You may already know how, but I will bet that someone in the class does not. If you know how to knit and you know how to purl and you know how to cast on and off all you need to learn is to increase and decrease. There are several methods for both and internet is a good place to learn those too. on this sweater there are increases and decreases. look at the under arms. Those are increases. Look at the neck line, those are decreases. Increase means making 1 stitch in to two, in the example above because I needed so much ease for the rapid curve, I picked up the yarn from between the stitches of the row below and knit it like a stitch. There are other ways, check out the internet to see the other methods or ask me if you like in a pm and I will explain. Decreases means making 2 stitches to one, just knit two stitches together. A cable is simple, using a cable hook, you take two or three stitches off your left needle onto the hook, drop it in back or front, knit the next stitches off the left needle then knit the ones from the cable hook. I often put the stitches back on the left needle then knit them, but you can also knit them off the hook. voila, you have crossed your first cable. Cables are that easy. If you need any help or encouragement, let me know, I'll be there to assist anyway I can. |
