Addison Acres in St. Louis

Good morning to all! Has anyone heard of or adopted from this breeder? They state 25 yrs of experience on the website, and say all the right things. The emails have been informative and positive as well. Just wondering as their puppies are adorable. If anyone has any info, I'd appreciate a heads up..thanks! Wish I'd never started looking at puppies...sigh!

They say all dogs are AKC registered and certified I have no idea what that means.

there are a number of St louis people on here they can probably help.
I was looking too, but what I have found is that any good breeder does not offer on a web site. Even some of the rescues are iffy. Please check up as far as you can.
There is a better way to check on whether someone is reputable by checking with third parties:

Do they genetically test their dogs for common Old English Sheepdog problems like hip dysplasia? If they are reputable they will do these tests and the results are a matter of public record at the following sight. Your breeder should be able to provide you with the sire and dam's AKC registration numbers so you can verify that they have been tested. If they say they have their dogs hips checked but they are not OFA certified than I would not trust them. Here is the website for the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals:

Even asking a breeder for referrals is not good because they are only going to give you the names of people who are happy with their "puppies".

Just because a breeder is asking a high fee does not mean you are getting a quality sheepdog BUT I would be very leary of a low priced sheepdog.

You are very smart to ASK AROUND about any breeder before making a purchase.

Definitely comparision shop. I invite anyone who calls me because my breeder referred them to come and look at my dog so I can show them what to look for.

I am sending you a PM with my opinion of this breeder.
There have also been a couple of discussions here on the board on Addison Acres. Go to the top and click "search", enter Addison Acres in the search field and you can read what others have written.

Good luck!

I don't know what you mean. If you're saying good breeders don't have web sites, that's absolutely incorrect. It's a case by case basis, which is why research is important. I'd always check with the Old English Sheepdog of America breed referral person first and foremost.
I should have said that some breeders who have web sites are ok but I have found that the general list are not ok. If you go to the referal listit is best.
Sorry for the wording!
auntybren...

SheepieMommy is giving you some great advice and I am sure you will be hearing from other forum members too....

If you are actually talking to Addison Acres, I would suggest that you ask every question you can think of and listen to their answers.

A couple of months ago, I called a questionable breeder to find some more detailed information than her website gave. She was very nice at first.....but I think my questions were making her uncomfortable....
How old is the mom??? (18 months)
When the last time she was bred, (last year)
Exactly what was tested on her, per website...all females are tested (hips and eyes)..
Where could I find the results on line? (You can't, but I can tell you her test scores were great!!) :?: :?: :?:

I knew something was not right. Then I mentioned that I also contacted a breeder who wanted 2 1/2 times more than she did and she basically told my that if I decided to spend that kind of money, I was crazy, especially since SHE was so close and so much less money!!! 8O 8O 8O

So I guess my advice to you is....ask questions.. alot of questions.
Thanks for all your information and guidance. I did research in the archives and found a wealth of discussion about this breeder. I will trust my instinct and steer clear. Thanks again. Will continue waiting for a rescue... Just seems like such a long wait..

You are so right!! I didn't call, but the emails are becoming more enticing in order to move those puppies. If it smells fishy...

there are good breeders out there who may have puppies if you really want a puppy. the choices are not only BYB, puppymill or Rescue.
I know that there are OESCA breeders (who are on the referral list) who have pups. Definitely go that route.
