Barney won't come up to bed...

Barney has always loved going to bed with us. He sleeps in our room. He can be dead to the world but you say Barney, time for bed, and he's up and running. If, at the same time of night you say Let's go outside, or Last call, or whatever having to do with going outside, he 'can't' hear you.

Well, the last few days he hasn't wanted to come to bed. He's actually been easier to get to go outside, but there have been 2 nights where he stayed downstairs since he absolutely didn't want to come?

Does anyone have any ideas? Nothing has changed in his environment as far as I know.

Morgan goes through stages like that too - since we don't allow the dogs the run of the house unsupervised, if he won't come up stairs with me (and sometimes there is bribery involved) I put him in the kitchen. It seems to go on for a couple of nights and then stops. I have no idea what causes it.
My maltese started doing that ...and I think we were paying less attn to her due to the kids and the "in your face" big dog, so it was almost like she just said "whatever." I had to force her to go upstairs.
Peeps has her bedtime fluctuations as well.

nine times out of ten, she sleeps with me. then, for no apparent reason, she'll sleep with my daughter - in her bed.

with four kids to choose from, i have no idea why Peeps picks Darla's bed on certain nights????

But for you in your case - is it especially warm in your room right now?

maybe Barney thinks you have the heat on too high
I am assuming that your bedroom is upstairs. One of the signs that our first sheepie had arthritis was that he became reluctant to do stairs. You might want to check him out and make sure he isn't in any discomfort.

Or maybe he's just weird. :D

Hopefully it is for some strange reason all Barney's own. :D But as Oscar's Mom said get him checked out by your vet. I have known two dogs who started refusing to use the stairs and one had athritis in the hips and the other in the spine. I'm praying for funny sheepie thinking. :D
How old is Barney? Both my older dogs delveloped arthritis in their lower back as they aged but they still did stairs.......they were just more "aware" of their timing. I once had a cockapoo (decades ago) that wouldn't do stairs & it was due to a kidney infection! I guess there are muscles that run overtop the kidneys & the motion of climbing stairs, muscles pressing against kidneys, was painful.
Yeah, I was wondering if his hips were bothering him, but he is fine going down all the stairs (like 10) to the yard...so I think he's just being weird. If he does it much longer, though, I'll go get him checked out.

Barney's 4.
I'd guess it's a leg thing. It could be hips or knees or just that he strained himself a little and although he's not limping he's still a little sore. We've been through periods like that with all of our sheepies over the years.

All through ThePas's life he needed help going up the stairs. He'd wait for me to put my hand under his bum and lift his back end up as he "walked" with no weight. Now I'm doing the same for Portage.

Since your guy is young I wouldn't be surprised if it's just a stiff/sore leg that isn't really bothering him much but makes stairs unpleasant. Or, if the stairs aren't carpeted maybe he tripped going up or down them earlier and now he's a little leery.

No matter what the cause we're sending you supportive and positive sheepiethoughts...good luck to you both.
Well, Barney happily came up to bed last night. It's like he knew I asked for help and wanted to mess with me! Oh well, at least he came to bed
