The food was freshly prepared and slid through the other side. You also paid to open a little door to get your service-forks, etc. These places were quite the rage in NYC, Chicago and ? Rather like a cross between a cafeteria and vending machines. was it xxx-mat? |

when i was a little kid ( and i'm not THAT old) I ate at the last of the Automats in Manhattan. It was really cool.
Seems if you Google "Manhattan" and "Automat" there's a new one that has opened up. And I found this COOL old photo link I love Google. |
The hospital cafeteria, off hours.
Every kind of sandwich and soup and whatever, all for the deposit of a few dollars, the rotation of the shelf and the opening of a door! |

Do you remember the Jerry Lewis movie where he ate at one of those??? LOL My husband loves Jerry Lewis movies. Me I could take them or leave them. |
I never knew what an Automat was until I saw an old B&W movie with Audrey Hepburn that had one in it not that long ago. I always wondered what Frank Sinatra meant when he sang that lyric "you can't find that at the Automat". I thought it was an "auto mat" like what you put in the floorboard of your car. |
