Then.....3 weeks ago, they decided to move him to Austin to start setting up (he's a system administrator) for their company. I was in shocked and of course, my automatic reaction was a big NO There was no way I was moving to Texas (no offense to those who lives there :) ) The state screams conservative to me.. Also the fact, i'm a die hard BRUIN fan moving into the Longhorn terrority is somewhat scary. Ok ok, im exaggerating.. I'm actually excited to show up at the U of TX stadium wearing a blue and yellow shirt. Then I realized that I was a bit biased and shouldnt judge since i've never been there... Thanks to google, Austin actually looks appealing. My husband has flown there 3 times within 3 weeks and loved Austin. He's very outdoorsy and i'm very artsy.. He says it's a blend of these two. so we're moving! We're already leading a loft in downtown and Jeff' will be driving across the country next week.. I, on the other hand, wont leave Rochester until April or even May to sell the house and to make arrangements for Tony's hip surgery. Overall, Im getting excited - i will be.. It's bittersweet though - leaving the upstate New York. Anyway questions - Is anyone on this forum is from Austin? Does anyone recommend a Vet in Austin - especially with OES. Tony will probably need extra care so my current priority to find a vet that is knowledgeable with this breed. I hate the idea of just picking one over the internet. I know this is a dumb question but how do you guys keep your sheepie's fur coat long during the heat? Especially the humidity.. I know that the coat doesnt always keep them cool and I hate the idea of shaving them down.. Any tips? Thanks a bunch!! |

regarding the care of the coat: Violet is a Florida girl, born and raised here....During the summer she is in airconditioning and goes out when she wants. Many times she lays out in the sun and comes in when she is ready. China, my one Aussie's coat is thicker then Violet's coat and she likes to lay out in the sun also.
When you take them for a walk during the summer, you go in the early morning or late evening just as you would do to get exercise for yourself. Have a shaded area for them also, they loved the Banana Trees and Chinese Palm to lay under. Good luck in your move and your new adventure! |
We're very familiar with the austin area, but we'd need a more specific area of where you will be to recommend a vet ...wouldn't be for OES specific, but my college friends will be able to tell you a "good vet." Many of them are actually vets, so they know where to and not to go. Otherwise, it'll just be testing them out yourself. If you find one, I can always ask if anyone has any objections to it. Unlike many places I've been where most of the vets stink imo, you'll find a lot of good ones there.
With that said, the humidity is really not that bad. In fact, you won't experience too many bad hair days from it. You move 3 hrs in my direction, and that's another story. There are show breeders who just, as mentioned, keep their dogs in the A/C all the time. Others keep their dogs in a puppy coat. There are actually a lot of liberals in Austin, so you're probably in a better area. Glad to hear you're coming in this direction! I'm 100% they won't care nearly as much as they would if you wore Maroon. |
i concur Mrs. J! I live in Abilene which is like 5-6 hours west of Austin but i visit all the time. Austin has a very unique city-culture and atmosphere. U won't really need to worry about the conservativeness in Austin's; that's more towards my area of the state Actually a big commercial campaign slogan in Austin is "Keep Austin Weird" Abilene copied them and my city's slogan is "Keep Abilene Normal"
I live in super dry heat so i can't really help you out with the coat issue Ren M |
I am just down the road in San Antonio. Austin is great and probably the most un-conservative city in TX
Just 2 words.....AIR CONDITIONING Cindy and Abracadabra |
one thing i forgot to mention.
I'm not sure if this is a TX thing or only in the Abilene area but our news weather people here are like rock stars or so they think. They break in every 5 minutes if there is even soo much as a blip on the weather Doppler. I was watching NBC yesterday at 6:30pm and b/c we were supposed to get down in the 30's with a possible chance of freezing rain, they broke in 6 times in 30 minutes!!!! Totally ridiculous and super annoying Ren M |
There's almost always a tornado watch or warning on the bottom of my screen. |
so another new yorker escapes - good for you!!! It will be hard to get used to reasonable weather, low taxes and the lack of daily indictments for public officials |
You either like Austin or you don't - I've never met anyone in between.
South by Southwest is great for music lovers. We've never figured out who the idiot was that designed the road system - easily the worst in the state. I would choose Lake Travis, if possible. Beautiful area. Ren, did you ever "get your ride in Clyde?" We used to have part of that. |
I've never heard that expression before??? But one time, when i first moved here i had a job interview in Tye. When i was coming back i missed all 9 exits to Abilene and ended up in Clyde!!! Does that count?
My husband's grandparents live in Clyde... Am i way off the mark or what???? Ren M |
