Lee is really excited and I'm sure Edgar will be too when she comes. A new playing buddy for him. The mother is 6 weeks pregnant right now. The breeder is a little over an hour away so we got to meet the mother and father. I can't get over how much shorter their ears are after having Edgar's big floppy ones to pet. Anyways, I am hoping that this puppy will bond to my husband. We are going to have him do most of the training. He wants his "own" dog as Edgar is very much mine. |
|
I don't know much about them, but they are often discussed on the herding lists and I think someone on the dog sports list has one too. |
They look very cute. Congrats... please post pics once you get them!! I guess they have to be born first. |
They are a close relative of oes...

Puppy excitement is puppy excitement no matter what breed it is. Congrats! |
Congrats! Looking forward to pics! |
Congrats! |
Congrats on the new puppy.
Can't wait to learn more about the breed - and do have fun with the new baby. Pictures required, of course! |
Does anybody have any great names? My husband is mostly leaving it up to me to name HIS dog. I can't think of any good girl names. Thank goodness we still have time to find something or it will end up being named 'DOG'.
We found out that there are 8 babies. Still haven't been born yet though. |
Are you thinking you want to stay in the English name genre? Do you like similar-sounding names, so you could have Edgar and Eleanor? Something like that? Or something completely different?
Naming things is so hard! |
I'm not sure that Lee cares. I'm just stumped as I don't do girlie names. If it was a boy dog I'd be set as I still have a whole list from when I named Edgar.
I do like how the 'E' and 'E' names sound together. That was how Emma's name came along. But we can't name the new dog after the dead dog. I did look through a bunch of old English sounding names but Lee didn't jump on any of them. So I guess at this point it's going to be anything that catches his fancy. I don't know why he can't name his own dog. Probably doesn't want to look through any baby naming books as it might catch. I told Lee about your name suggestion and then he went and played two songs with the name in it. Don't know what that means. |
just googled the breed, and it looks similar to a border collie! looks lovely. names......Echo..Ella..Ellie..Elsie..Eliza..Emma..Emily..Erica..Erin..Eve..could go on for ages... |
how about these ones?
Edie Enid Ella Eliza Eilish Edna Ellie |

We found out that there are 8 babies. Still haven't been born yet though. "DOG" is a great name! We had a friend that named their Golden Retriever "Dog" but it was spelled out; ended up sounding like "DeeOhGee". It took me years to figure out that when i called their dog, I was actually spelling out the word "Dog". Some days I'm just not that smart. |

He was a naughty, nasty tempered Border Collie. |
thats a shame; the Diogi (D-O-G)that we knew was the sweetest dog ever. He passed a few years ago, and it was so sad! |
Congrats on the new puppy!! How about Esther or Etta or Edie? |
Thanks for the suggestions. I told him all of them but he didn't say much so ?????? Yeah I don't know what that means. He says that they don't have to be "E" names though. I'm really not sure what he is looking for. Sigh
I never knew anyone with a dog named Dog but I did know someone with a cat named Dog. It was a teenage boys cat. And why he named it Dog I don't know since he had had two literal dogs at the time. |

When my youngest brother was 8 he named the tiny chihuahua/terrier cross bitch that my Mom rescued "Dog". We never discovered why, he just said because. It was always a crack up at the Vets. They'd come out expecting a biggish male and find this tiny little female dog sitting in someones lap. On the topic of names for your pup I like Edwina, Eddie for short. |
How about Maude? |
On the same vein as DOG, I had a Brittany who's call name was Girl. |
ButtersStotch wrote: How about Maude?
Cute. I told Lee what about Maude and his response back was that he had an great Aunt named that. And he didn't think his mom would appreciate us naming his dog after the Aunt. Afraid to ask farther. I should just resign myself to the name "Dog". |
Darth Snuggle wrote: thats a shame; the Diogi (D-O-G)that we knew was the sweetest dog ever. He passed a few years ago, and it was so sad!
My trainer has a D.O.G. and when my son was little he named his pet rabbit Dog. Never knew why - we had a dog...... |
The puppies are born. They all turned out black and white. I was hoping for the mothers colors but oh well.
Here is the link if anyone wants to see the babies. http://snowyriverenglishshepherds.com/page14.html |
Tiny little cuties. |
Beautiful puppies. |
Nice puppies and I must admit I have never heard of this breed before reading this thread, you never stop learning. |
There are new pictures of the baby puppies this week. Much cuter then last week. Lee thinks they look a little like OES's at this stage. http://snowyriverenglishshepherds.com/page14.html |
Inu (pronouned EE new) japanese for dog, chisai (chi sigh) japanese for little or Okie (Oh key) japanese for large/big. |
The pups are cute
Do you know which one will be yours yet? |
Nope not at all. Grrrr. |
have you shortlisted some names for your pupper yet? |
Nada on the name list. There isn't even one on it. I think Lee is refusing to think about it. I might threaten to get a baby name book and carry it around with me everywhere so people start asking questions. That ought to make him uncomfortable.
I think I like the markings on Dally the best since she has the most white on her. I hate not knowing which one we will get. Maybe if Lee stares at their pictures he will get some name ideas? |
Dally is sooo cute....I have a family friend named Dallas... |
The breeder updated the pictures again. This time Lee said that he liked Cassie's little stripe that went up her head. http://snowyriverenglishshepherds.com/page14.html
As for names....he has two that he is considering. Digby and Pibgorn. He still isn't sure yet as he wants a name that is a little unique. We are going to drive up and see the puppies soon. That will be fun because then we can get a better idea for who we like. |
Ooh, I love Wyatt!
And yes, I think your husband wants a unique name! Pibgorn? |
Oh they are so cute!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Pibgorn is a fat girl's name. Lee clearly wants to subject her to teasing. (although I kind of like it but as a male name). |
HAHA! Well what if she turns into a porker? Perfect name then. The name Pibgorn come from a comic that he reads online. I suggested that name for him since it seemed off the wall. Then you could call it Pibs or Pibby. He isn't sure about it though. But seeing as he only has one more name on his maybe list (that I also gave him) it's not like he has a whole lot of options.
I suppose that I could always suggest naming the puppy after his other favorite web comic. XKCD. Now that would be a mouthful. If you want to shorten it would it just be X? Or XK? Maybe just CD? |
crustybirds wrote: HAHA! Well what if she turns into a porker? Perfect name then.
Well, you don't want it to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. C'mon, give her an edge, lol. I kind of like the idea of naming a dog X and it somehow seems more fitting for that breed. It would turn into calling her Exy, which is kind of cute, too. |
The puppy picture page has been updated again. http://snowyriverenglishshepherds.com/page14.html I'm starting to get a little more excited now. Soon I am going to put in a big order to Ryans Pet Supply. Lee still hasn't chosen a name but I am going around calling it puppy X. He says he has been thinking about names for her. I don't believe it though.
Hopefully the link works correctly. I had to push refresh on it because it was showing me the old pictures. |
They are looking like puppies now!
Very cute. Maybe hubby just needs to see and hold his puppy to get a name. |
The puppies are adorable! It is so exciting to have a new puppy in the house soon. |
So cute. Cassie's my favorite. I like her zig zag line on her head. |
Yeah I think they are starting to look cuter. When they are so small they just look like blobs kinda. I think a couple of the boys are really cute. Which is bad because we aren't getting a boy. I can't help myself though as I really like boy dogs.
We are going to see the puppies this coming weekend if everything goes right. Lee is pretty excited. Maybe that is what Lee needs to be able to pick out a name. He wants a name a little out of the ordinary so I think that is why it is taking him so long. Maybe what I should have asked was if anyone had any bizarre names for a dog. |
Dan had Beowulf for a few days before he got his name - actually he tried another name on for size for a couple of days and didn't like it. |
We were all set to call Isaac "Steeler" when we got him (we are huge Steelers fans). The name just didn't fit. I sat in church the next day & kept looking thru the hymnal & came up with Isaac. For the last 10-1/2 years we have both said "we should have called him Moses"!!!! He takes the longest time to come in from outside of ANY dog we've ever had! |
We went and saw the puppy's yesterday. Oh my goodness they are cute, cute, CUTE. They were very friendly and all came up to us for pets and licks. Then they went to chewing on us and each other. By the time we left they were all sacked out on each other taking a nap. http://snowyriverenglishshepherds.com/page14.html Still no name yet. I suggested this time naming her after a famous mathematician or music composer or something computer related. Lee is thinking about it. So she is still being referred to as puppy X. |
crustybirds wrote: Still no name yet. I suggested this time naming her after a famous mathematician or music composer or something computer related. Lee is thinking about it. So she is still being referred to as puppy X.
I always wanted to name a female OES 'Grace'-- because they so aren't. I've had a female "Lillibet" (Queen Elizabeth's nickname as a child), a 'Lulu', and a "Bo"-- even a female rescue that came with the unfortunate name of "Puppy"-- caused, no doubt, by her former owners' inability to decide on a proper name. But every time I have suggested it, my wife says, "Oh no, not 'Grace', again." "Come on... 'Grace'...'Gracie'... it's a great name for a female sheepdog..." "No." "It's better than 'Bo'. George Burns' wife was 'Gracie'..." "No...no 'Grace'." Lucky for her our last five OES rescues have been males so this hasn't come to a test of wills... yet. |
Ha ha, I kind of like Puppy X--makes her seem tough or something |
Oh my goodness they are getting cute. http://snowyriverenglishshepherds.com/page14.html (push refresh if you get the old pictures) I'm getting nervous though. Is this normal? Starting from scratch again seems scary now. I have this crazy irrational fear that Lee will hate Edgar once he gets his new puppy. What if I don't like the new puppy? I'm just a little freaking out now. Still no name. Heisenberg and Mendel appealed to Lee because they both did something with science. He isn't quite happy with either of the names though. |
Any reason behind the mathemetician or composer inspiration for names?
There are some names of females that don't really lend themselves to naming a dog. Unless you have a particular name in mind it all seems a bit arbitary? |

Lee just wants an unusual name. Doesn't have to be mathematician, composer, or scientist. Lee is just kind of a smart geek so I suggested something in that realm. I also suggested something computer related. Really....anything that would maybe give him an idea to help him along with the naming process. I'm going to start suggesting names of household appliances next or food brand names in the grocery store if he doesn't hurry up. |

I love the puppy Seven...he's so cute (well, they all are, though).
What about Mac or Macintosh for a computer-inspired name? |

What about Mac or Macintosh for a computer-inspired name? That is a good idea. I liked it and told him. He said "but I don't have a Macintosh" But it did give me the idea of suggesting Tux (Tux is a black and white penguin) who is the the mascot of Linux. Which he seemed to like. Now like as in naming I have no idea.....GRRRRRRRR |
We found out which one we will most likely be getting. Lee is super excited because that was the puppy he wanted. The breeder wants us to hold off on getting her fixed because she may want to breed her later on depending on things. She has the best markings and structure so far. Dally is the puppy that we should be getting. |
Cute! Are markings important in this breed? (I'm too lazy to look it all up.) |
Hmm, somewhat important but not super picky as the working ability is more important. The puppy that we should be getting just had a more pleasing look. One of the female puppies (or two can't remember) only had half a white neck ring that went around and two of the puppies didn't have as much white on their muzzles. Dally had a whole white neck ring and a bigger blaze. (The United Kennel Club has this to say about the colorings...
Quote: There are five predominant color patterns: Black and White; Black and Tan; Black, White and Tan; Sable and White, and Tan & White. The Black and White has a well-defined black coat with white trim. White trim may include: a white neck ring, a blaze of white on foreface and/or topskull, as well as those areas defined below for tan trim. However, the white blaze should not extend back so far as to meet the white neck ring. The Black and Tan has a well defined black coat with tan trim, which appears on the cheeks as "shepherd spots," over the eyes, as a broad chest bar, on the front legs as stockings up to just above the knees, inside the hind legs, on the feet, under the tail and inside the ears. A Black and Tan may have white on the chest. If any white appears in the trim areas, the dog is not a Black and Tan, but is defined as a Black, Tan and White (tri-color). The Black, Tan and White (tri-color) has a well defined black coat with some white replacing the tan trim. There must be, however, tan "shepherd spots" over the eyes. Tan includes colors from light gold to mahogany brown. The Sable and White has a well-defined, sable-colored coat with white trim. Tan & White has a well defined tan coat, which can range from shades of Fawn to Red, with white trim. Permitted: white neck ring, white tip on tail, white chest; white on lower legs; blaze on face. Disqualifications: Excessive white covering more than 1/3 of dog. Solid white coats. Whites with black or sable spots. Blue merles. Solid red or red merle. Solid black coat. Albinism. |
We are bringing the puppy home tomorrow after Lee gets off work. He still doesn't have a name for her. Maybe while driving up to get her Lee will think of something. |
I'm sure you'll have a name a few days after having her ...if not right away. |
Woohoo - puppyday!
|
How exciting! After we adopted Asia it took me a few days to come up with a new name for her. She came to us as "Sparkles". Sometimes you just have to watch them play and a name pops into your head.
Good luck and enjoy your new puppy. |
Here she is all sacked out from the drive home. Everything went really easy. No whining at night and no accidents yet. We don't have to worry about breeding her as the puppy has a little bit of a slipped hock and the breeder doesn't want to pass that down. Otherwise her confirmation was great. Edgar is taking it well so far.
|
She is very cute
I love those freckles. Any name yet? |
they look so peaceful when they are asleep |
Aw, so tiny. How does Edgar like her? |
No name yet. Lee told me today that he wasn't actively thinking about names until we got her. Now he is keeping a list of idea names. GRRRRRRRR!
Edgar had diarrhea today. I think it was a combination of stress and the two bowls full of cat food he ate sneakily last night. He wants to play but he is just too big and rambunctious. Otherwise the puppy isn't scared of him and Edgar is curious of her. Mostly we have been keeping them separate. |
Shes gorgeous and so tiny. |
Ah she is so sweet. I'm glad everything is going well so far. I'm sure Edgar can't believe you won't let him play with his new "toy." I'm sure they will do well together...will bring the "puppy" back out in Edgar. |
AWww, she is so cute and tiny. How big is she supposed to get when she's full grown?
I'm glad it's going well so far (aside from Edgar's diarrhea!) |
They weigh between 40 and 70 pounds. Her mom was on the lighter side and her dad wasn't near 70 either. So I am thinking around 40 or 45 pounds.
She seems so small compared to Edgar. He wants to play but he smashes her with his paw. He stepped on her head earlier and on the second day we had her he stepped on her back. I know puppies are tough but we have been keeping them apart mostly so Edgar doesn't accidentally hurt her. Once she gets a little bigger then I won't have to worry so much. |
