It's time to prepare to give my 14-month pup his first shave. He still looks good, but the mats are beginning to become intolerable. I'm planning to do this at the end of February, when the coldest time is past, but meanwhile, I thought I'd get a good clipper and start practicing by giving him sanitary trims. So looking around online, I found this Oster at drs. fosters & smith: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/p ... atid=13573 Is this a good deal? Will it do the job? TIA |

From here it looks good I just bought a "Golden A5 Two Speed Clipper" with only one #10 blade and it cost me 250.00 and so far I have been scared to try using it , seeing as I don't know what the hek I'm doing |
I have an Andes 2 speed. I shave my dogs down several times a year & also use it for cleanliness trims in the private areas & between the pads of the feet. It comes with a #10 blade which I use for the above mentioned procedures. I bought extra #10's as they tend to get warm very quickly. I bought #7 blades to get thru any mats that might be there (this happens with a friend's OES who comes for trimming a couple times a year) & #3-3/4 blades for regualr shave downs on the body. Rule of thumb is the lower the number, the longer the hair will be after trimming. That means the higher the number, the closer to the skin it will shave. To use the #3-3/4 blade, you can't have any mats. I've never been very impressed with the "attachment blades" they sell. I've seen people use them but they just don't seem to give the kind of cut I like. Not even enough. I've had these same clippers for maybe 8 years now with no problem....knock on wood! |
i use andis a5 and a moser too
for a longer clip i use from a #10 to a #30 blade and then use metal combs http://www.technogroom.co.uk/catalog/pr ... lade-combs these can range from 3mm to 25mm and they dont fall off. i am not sure if they will fit your clippers, but if they do i would really recomend them. though they will not get through matts |
We have that exact clipper (Oster A5 Turbo 2-speed) but after a lot of research, bought a Wahl KM-2 to replace it. The KM-2 is a slower speed clipper with a lot of torque. It's powerful but doesn't get hot and is lighter in weight than the Oster, which I find hard to hold onto. The KM-2 goes through a matted coat like butter and my hand doesn't end up cramping. The best thing is the price, which is now around $120-$130 on-line. Shop around, we bought ours new for under $100 on eBay. A #10 blade is included with the clippers and it will accept any standard clipper blade.
I originally considered a Laube MiniMicro but couldn't justify the cost for a clipper that would only be used occasionally. If you're planning to trim one OES a few times a year, almost any professional-grade clippers will do the job. (They're the ones they usually put in the locked case at PetSmart ) If you want the combs that attach to the clipper blade, the best ones are stainless steel. Plastic combs tend to pop off the blade. Never had much luck with them because most OES are too matted if they need clipping. Buying a longer blade, such as a #5 or #7, would be a better investment to start with. |
I have had golden a5's for 20 years. Try a farm store or horse supply. Dr Fosters seems expensive. I love mine and like I said they last. |
