My dog skips his meals... really.

Our 5yr old sheepie, who is is very good health, mentally and physically tends to go not want to eat his morning meal. Sometimes it happens once a week, sometimes he does this several days in a row. On those days when he does skip breakfast, he does eat his normal dinner.

Here's what we're wondering;
Is this kind of behavior normal to any degree?
On those 'skip' days, should we supplement his dinner with slightly more food?

He eats Iams in the green bag and always has His activity level doesn't seem to ever change, even on the 'skip' days.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Vance

In the wild dogs do go days between eating sometimes (hard to believe when our guys are so set on their schedules :D ) some people fast their dogs once a week - I can't imagine I would ever get away with that!!.

I don't feed a orning meal to any but th epuppy anymore because they were so erratic in eating it. the best key to what and how much to feed is your dog's condition. if they maintain good condition I wouldn't be concerned.
Baloo does this once in a while too. I don't worry. I just leave his food there a while and figure he will eat when if gets hungry. Sometimes he will eat it by noon... he always eats his evening meal. If he has left it there and eaten it later like that I jsut adjsut his evening meal so that he isn't getting too much too close together.

He will sometimes do this for 2 or 3 days in a row then not do it again for several weeks. I am not worried. He's eating, he's healthy, vet says his weight is great... no worries!! :D
dittio. Snowy does the same. I feed her morning and evening. The morning one is what she leaves sometimes for hours. I don't worry. For the most part she eats ..... Do you always want to eat at the time it is suppose be. Many times I am not just plain hungry. Maybe it is the same for pets. :)
Maggie does the same thing. Sometimes she will go for days without eating in the morning and/or the evening. It does change her poo schedule, but since she is maintaining her weight, the vet said not to worry. Oh, and he said that as long as she poos once and awhile while she is skipping meals too, she is fine.

Do you have mirrors at doggie-eye level? Maybe he has some self-image issues. If you think he does, you should tell him that his coat is what adds 10 lbs....not the food!
Bingley will do this occasionally, too. I call him my "self-regulator"!! I get more worried than he does!
Violet has never missed a meal. lol However, my Aussie China skips breakfast alot. Sometimes she will pick a little and then walk away. I noticed my other Aussie Asia starting to do the same thing. Violet scopes out the left over food in the Aussie's bowls and has to be reminded that those don't belong to her. All three are very healthy.
Archie started to get a little less enthusiastic for his meals a few times leaving the bowl full for hours, until one day Maramalade one of our cats was helping himself  , Archie saw this told him off and wolfed the lot down, since that day he has set straight to his meal no stopping, he even gives us a growl if we pass him while he eats.
Simone was doing that when her tummy was bothering her. Now that we think we have that under control, she's back to eating twice a day.

Paige, my dear Pyr, self regulated herself to maintain a very trim figure. She knew what she needed and nothing more.

No, I never make up if they miss a meal. They get the same amount. You don't want to over fill them and risk bloat.
I found my youngest one would leave some food in his bowl now & then. When I thought back on it, it was when he wasn't growing. He knew he didn't need as much food more than I knew it. As adults mine all eat the minute the bowl goes down....unless they are getting sick. If they leave food now or pass it up I know to look for a sick dog. If you have an only dog he may not find any reason to worry about his food. When you have multiple dogs & even feeding them in their own kennels, they will still usually eat it right down. Don't want anyone else to possibly get even 1 of their kibbles! I have a girl in a show home that just nibbles at home. When she comes here she gobbles up 2 cups faster than a wink. I think the others have let her know silently that she better act like one of them or she won't be accepted!
Obe licks the bowl clean at both feedings. Then goes to where the food is, looks to make sure I didn't drop any. Comes back to his bowl, looks and licks because you never know. Then off to the yard.
Nigel is never very hungry at breakfast time. He will eat everything if he is getting enough exercise...but because of the dynamics here, he doesn't always. When he was here alone he would graze all day, Bella put a stop to that behavior.
