I never really noticed how "grown up" he was getting until last night on our walk. Oliver walked over to a tree, and lifted his leg . Oliver has never been a leg lifter, in fact he usually squats so low that his tummy is touching the grass. Granted, I don't think he quite gets the concept of actually peeing on the tree yet. He lifts his leg, then squats to pee , it'll click one of these days! |

Funny... Obe is the same way. Sometimes he doesn't even pee, just get the leg. |
Jennie that is too funny.
Harry is the same way - but it took him until he was 3! But he usually only does it when we are on a walk or somewhere with new smells so I think it is more about marking. Like you - I was thinking "my boy is growing up". |

Congrats Oliver - way to go!
For a long time my Sancho peed like a girl, So close to the ground, I was wondering what he was doing. Then when he started to lift his leg he sometimes lifted it so high that he did a split and he lost his balance and almost fell! |
So there is hope for Baloo yet??!!??
He still squats like a girl to pee... I figured he'd always do it that way... maybe he will get the hang of it one day too. |
Isn't it funny the different ways males pee?
Archie if there is no vertical object to pee against will simply stands legs slightly set apart (not squat) and pee (he hits his front legs less often these days thankfully!) If there is a wall, a corner preferably or a Lamp post then he lifts his leg. He has fallen on his side a couple of times as he tried to lift his leg past vertical never mind him peeing I almost wet myself |
Fitz is 14 months old & he hasn't quite figured the whole leg lift thing out yet either. He usually squats, but on the rare occasion when he lifts his leg, he doesn't actually pee, 'cause he's way too busy just trying to stay upright. It's like he can't concentrate on more than one thing at a time. So either he just lifts his leg and puts great effort into balancing in that position for a second, or he squats and pees. Either/or, never both. |
Well, glad to know Oliver isn't in the boat alone. I've always heard lifting the leg is a learned behavior...wonder if it's true. |
Ru cracks me up if there is nothing to pee against, he switches leg halfway through, like hes dancing or something. |
Do we WANT them to lift their legs? I prefer the squat and am bummed that they may switch to the leg lift. I rather have my grass than objects stained w/pee. |
einy only lifts his leg to pee on the mail box post!!!!!
luckily his lead does reach that far from the door so he only get to do it when he can escape the front door before we can stop him i'm so glad he NEVER goeson the road and never runs off zoe and einy |
I need to send Syd over for big boys lessons We are hoping one day but surrounded by squatters who knows when this will happen
His brothers are lifting their legs now, we always said Syd missed out on the brains when they were handing them out Maybe there is hope one day |
Syd didnt miss out in the brains department, he is just very selective about when to switch them on. Why waste energy using your brains when there's all those girls to do the thinking for him. |
My Taylor(Golden) lifted his leg about five times in his eleven years with us. Simon started to lift his leg about a year ago. If there is nothing to lift to he squats. Garfunkel is the same.
Its all about sending out p-mail. |

I'd much rather Oliver squat. I just love thinking of him as "my little guy". |
My sheepie lifts his leg when there's something to lift it on. Otherwise, he squats (& hits his front paw).
My airedale didn't lift his leg until about age 3. And I think it was because he saw the other male dogs doing that at the dog park. But he's the same as the sheepie now. |
Matisse started doing the lifting a few months ago. Now he has to do a dance routine by literally switching lifted legs as he is going. It lands on BOTH backs of front paws sometimes..... |
