I'm wondering if a large appliance might be malfunctioning and drawing excess power, but this house isn't even three years old. Just wondering........ Laurie and Oscar |

Our electric seems to be constant month to month in the winter and drops in the summer. And it is always much lower than the gas bill in the winter. You may need one of those energy audits or something. It seems fishy. |
I'm not in any of those states, but many people where we live experienced the same thing a few months ago due to Ike. They were too busy, so companies were doing estimates that were WAY off the normal ones. Ex: Ours is usually $100 and ours was $289 ...and we used our electricity LESS that month. Most of the people we know had the same problem, and had to jump a lot of hoops on the phone to get them to come out to re-read our meters. |
Can you break it down into two parts.... the cost per kilowatt hours (kWh) (that may be broken down into many little sub-parts, so it might be hard to figure) and the kWh USED.
Then you can see if it's more usage or if the price has gone up. I think that's the starting point. |
Could it be that this month they did the actual reading as opposed to the estimated reading so the actual is reflecting all the difference in the past months? We've had that happen in the past. |
My last electric bill was about $20 higher than the previous month. I figure it was higher because of all the Christmas lights, and the cold. The heat is gas, but it takes more electricity to run the blower on the furnace. Face it, ComEd raises prices at their whim, too. |
Thanks for the tips. I compared the bills from the last few months, and the costs are the same, but the Kw hours used went up significantly. Also, they read our meters every month so we get charged for actual useage.
One thing I need to check.....maybe this billing cycle was 33 days when previous ones were for shorter time periods. Hmmmm, so maybe cost per day, it evens out. But it still seems odd that the electric bill is more than my gas bill, when we've had record low temps. Logical and perfectly rational perhaps, but irritating nonetheless................................ Laurie and Oscar |
Well, if you're electricity goes out then you have no heat, right? Even though you have a gas furnace the blower on the furnace is electric, so if it is really cold the blower will be on longer and use more electricity. Also, being off work for holidays and such you may have been home more. And, because it was darker very early over the last 30 days you probably had lights on in your house earlier than you turn them on in fall and spring. Just some ideas. |
My electric, gas and water bills triplet to last year! I should have paid back nearly £300 for the last 3 month even if I'm paying £150 already but I talked to the gas/water/electric company and they wait if I can save some energy! That means I have to use my washing machine and dryer now AFTER 11.30pm and BEFORE 6.30am because it's cheaper!!! ...how stupid, I sleep at that time!!!???!!! well, but I did the washing already twice at night, and I also got only 2 heaters on in the house and sit here with my hot water bottle! that's how we try do to save money!! LOL |
