So I open the garage door and was greeted by a 20 something male with a box full of our stuff. I asked who he was, and he gave me some name, and I asked what he was doing there. (with a few expletives thrown in...) He walked past me and his buddy went out the front door. I grabbed the phone, dialed 911, and followed the kid out trying to get a look at the license plate. He stood in front of the car so I couldn't see the plate and reached into his coat, implying he had something in there and told me to get off the phone. I managed to get a few numbers off the license plate and ran inside and locked the door. These kids were total punks so I really didn't think there was a gun, but his buddy was kind of big and I guess I didn't want to take a chance. The cops got there very fast, but they were gone. They haven't caught them yet but I got really good descriptions of them and the car- so we're hopeful! As scary as it was I'm thankful that I walked in on them because they really didn't take that much. I'm just furious because poor Walter was terrified. He peed no the carpet and was shaking like crazy. I'm pretty surprised that they had the guts to walk past the 100 lb barking sheepdog... guess it shows how smart they are. So yea, Walter is officially fired as guard dog! |
|
holy cow....i mean HOLY COW!
i cannot believe that you did that...followed them out and all...im glad that youre okay...holy cow.... sorry about walter the non guard dog....poor baby....wonder what they did to make him pee inside....grrrr.. |
Oh my gosh, well I'm so glad you're okay. They could have done anything to you!!!!!
Have you talked to your parents? What did they say? I'm actually shocked Walter didn't attack them. I would have thought he would have thrown out a few karate moves or something. Hmm.. Anyway, I hope they find them and you find out what all was taken. |
Wow I can't believe that happened, Glad you and Walter are ok |
My parents came home right away, it was at their house not my apartment so it's all their stuff that got jacked.
As far as confronting the guy and following him out, he looked about 20 years old and 150 lbs. He was a total wimp, and he was just wearing a sweatshirt and jeans so I didn't see any weapons. His friend scared me though. I'm just furious at the thought of them hitting or messing with Walter. I checked him over and don't see anything... but who knows. Ugh, it makes me sick to even think about! |
Poor Walter and you...
I hope you both get over the awful scare! |
That is awfully scary. Glad everyone is okay. Poor Walter. |
Wow! That's crazy that you walked right in on it. Did they take the stuff as they left or did they just run? |
OMG Heather, I am SO glad you didn't further confront those guys.
I hope they didn't hurt poor lil' Walty. I have to imagine he barked like crazy when they showed up!?!? You should check him for taser marks and watch him for signs of poisoning. |
That is crazy. Glad they didn't hurt you. |
How scary for you and Walter! I hope the police get those punks. Wonder how they got in? Maybe Sheriff Lizzie needs to give Walter guarding lessons.
Give Walter extra hugs tonight. And give one to yourself. |
Oh my soul. I am so glad that everyone is ok. You are one brave gal. If it were me, I would have been the one peeing on the carpet.
Again, so very glad you and Walter are ok! |
Glad everyone is ok. |
I'm so glad you and walty are safe. How scary. But you sure are one brave cookie. Walking out to the car and trying to get thier license number. People are getting more and more brave with this home invasion stuff. |
How scary! I'm so glad you or Walter didnt get hurt. That's just crazy, although I've heard a lot of robberies happen during broad daylight b/c many people are away at work during the day.
poor walter... |
Ditto to Darcy's HOLY COW!
I hope they catch them |

Holy crap Ron you sure know how to freak me out more! He seems fine, he's just scared. They got some stuff, but I definitely stopped them before they got to a lot of things. |
Oh wow.....I hope you are ok through all of this....Please check walty over for any stiff areas....I really would hate to even suggest this, but he may have been kicked or punched. If he never urinates something may have happened.
I would JUST to be on the safe side consider taking him to the vet, see if he has a temp. Ron is right about poisoning..... |
I'm glad you are okay Heather. Poor Walter.
People suck. We had a burglary in our neighborhood (Libertyville)a few months back, and my SIL had a robbery in her neighborhood (Hawthorn Woods) in December. As the economy worsens, people get crazier and crazier........ Property crime always increases in a bad economy. I am really surprised though that these guys were willing to brave a house with a large dog. That kind of freaks me out. Before the robbery in our area, I rarely set our alarm before leaving, but now, I set it every single time. I often use it when I'm home alone as well, as we don't have many neighbors close by. I hope that Walter is okay. Laurie and Oscar |
That is so scary! I'm glad you and Walty are safe. |
Oh my. You are so brave and handled the situation so well.. I would not have been able to keep my temper, I would lash out at anyone. I'm very foolish when it comes to defending my home & dog, I'm so glad you did the right thing.
Poor Walter. Please give him an extra special treat and tell him we all love him |
OMG, Heather!8O How SCARY! I also don't know how you found the courage to confront him outside. And poor Walter! From everything you've always told us about him, I would not have pictured him as one who would cower from strangers, another reason to think maybe they kicked or hurt him in some way.
I'm so glad they didn't get away with much, but as a parent, I would give everything away just to know that my child was safe. This whole thing, aside from the basic robbery, must have put one HELL of a scare in your parents!:twitch: I would STILL be crying and hugging you! |
Hi Heather,
Oscar and Dudley are sending sending Walter positive vibes. I suspect Dudley would react the same way Walter did. Dudley is full of bravado, but when push comes to shove he really is a chicken at heart. I hope they didn't hurt Walter in any way. I also hope they catch those guys quickly. Kathie |
OH WOWZER!!
I think I would have peed on the carpet along with Walty. So glad not much was taken or damage was done. I can't believe that they were not dumbfounded at being caught red handed. Geesh... I just don't understand people sometimes. |
you have guts to face them glad you are ok now you know walter would rather hide behind u |
well, i would think with the car description, color, make, etc and with a partial license plate, that they would be able to find them rather quickly...
hows walty doing today? |

Kathie Yea, they are definitely related! He is really a big chicken when it comes to people. I'm sure he barked his head off but once they got in he probably went and laid on the couch. He's fine today, I couldn't find any cuts or sore spots on him. Laurie- That's so scary! My parents are in Long Grove so that's very close to you and your sister and law. |
just wanted to let you know how badly i feel for you and your parents... and how relieved i am that you all are "okay".
poor, poor, Lil Walty! and don't write off his "guard dog" capabilities. how ever those bad guys intimidated Lil Walty, it may have been in his best interest to back down. after all, the house is only territory. but i wouldn't be surprised if all bets would be off if they messed his "sheep"! i hope you all can feel safe again. i'm sure it's pretty hard to do. |
I'm so glad you are safe Heather and poor Lil Walty! Merlin, Panda and Snoop are sending him some sheepie kisses.
You scared the poop outta me when I read your story! Just last night I was shocked and remarked to Kaj regarding a story from the newspaper I was reading, about something that had occurred in my area. It was the same scenerio as yours..a woman arriving home from work to see two 20's aged guys standing beside her husbands truck. She too confronted them and reached for the phone. She wasn't as lucky as you as unbelievably they both beat her up. I was shocked when I read the story and what saved her from continuous beating was someone hearing her screams. Then I read your story and had a horrible feeling. You were so lucky it didn't escalate and both you and Lil Walty are okay. I would have done exactly the same as you but after reading that story in the paper ..it will make me think twice. Hope they catch those guys and that you both are okay. I too would have peed on the floor along with Lil Walty. Just goes to show he's a lover not a fighter. Marianne |
OMG, how scary!
I also would have peed on the carpet along with Walter. Glad you are both okay. |
You'd think he would have at least eaten them when they went back in... |
I for one am glad Walter is NOT a guard dog. If he had tried to go after them, they might have hurt that sweet boy. I'm just so grateful both you and he are okay. Stupid punk kids. |
How's Walter doing? Heather, I thought your parents lived in Long Grove, which is a great community. If they live in a neighborhood, they might want to alert their neighbors to this incident, maybe put something in their mailboxes. I know many parts of Long Grove are fairly isolated, so that might not be possible, but you also might find other folks who have been hit by the same scumbags.
Do your parents have an alarm system? As much as I use mine, I probably wouldn't if Oscar weren't deaf, as setting off the alarm might cause a pup to panic if you weren't there. With Oscar, no worries. From your previous topics, I am guessing that Walty is a bit anxious, so an alarm might not be a good option. Anyway, I'm with Darcy. How difficult can it be to find the guys who did this, with all of the information you gave the police? Maybe I am watching too much Law and Order (chung chung.....) Laurie and Oscar |
YIKES!
I am so happy you are all safe. Yep, Ron is right, Walty may have been tasered or kicked. He may have residual aggression issues develop too. Poor baby. Ask the PD for the following: 1. Have a community service officer do a walk through of your home for increased security suggestions. 2. Get a Neighborhood Watch program started. 3. In about a month ask that they place your home on your precinct's patrol list. That way you have a cop driving by your home daily. Please be careful and aware of your surroundings. Not only did you see them, they saw you. They have the advantage as they know where you live. Vary your schedule as much as possible and buddy up with someone for a while. A crummy economy does bring on more of this stuff. Typically they return in a couple of months for the stuff they saw during the first tour of your home. Make sure Walt has easily readable updated info on his tags, in the event they decide to scare him out of your house and yard. Sorry that this happened to you. I don't intend to scare you (though, based on your experience, I am guessing that is unlikely!! ) But better to be prepared, ya know? Hugs to you and Walty. Sure glad you are safe! |
Well, upon further inspection I am almost certain that they either hit Walter or sprayed him with something in his eyes (Dave thinks pepper spray). His eye is red and has a little bit of a scab. It kills me to think they did something to him.. I'm getting choked up just typing this!
As far as the police go, they are SLOW. We're still waiting on the results of them running the plates. The sketch artist did a great job, and the pictures look exactly how I remember them (whether that's how they actually look is a whole different story!) They will be watching our house/neighborhood for about a month. And as soon as the sketches are released to us I'll pass them out to our entire subdivision. Laurie- I didn't even think about the alarm system freaking Walter out, but that's an excellent point. He's so anxious it would give him a heart attack! |
Poor Walter!! Bless his heart. I HATE that they hurt him. NOTHING makes me more furious than someone hurting babies. |
I am just now seeing this. How scary. I am just glad that you and Walter are okay.
We had some incidents in a community near us. Fortunately they caught the guy. But there is no doubt that crime is on the uprise. |
Just read this! Good grief! Glad you are both all right. Did you take Walter to the vet just in case? I've often said that if we had a burglar, I'd probably get between him and Willoughby! |
Wow... how awful... poor Walter! I'm glad you weren't hurt though... |
Poor Walter, I hope he feels better real soon.
I dont want to bum you out but as someone else already mentioned it, I'll add my 2 bobs worth. I was burgled a few years back and it only took the sod 2 weeks to come back and get in again. They caught him eventually but it was too late to get any of my stuff back. I would talk to the police about extra security measures that you can implement, that may or may not involve and alarm. Good luck, hopefully they catch them before they burgle anyone else again. |
These thieving toerags, ought to consider themselves lucky you weren't carrying a gun! |
Archies Slave wrote: These thieving toerags, ought to consider themselves lucky you weren't carrying a gun!
Exactly! Just remember, for California residents one must tell the police "I was in fear of losing my life" to explain the bullet riddled body on your lawn. |
