Garfunkel Goes To The Vet

We rescued Gar a year go this month and he weighed in around 56-59lbs....somewhere around there. He was painfully thin, shy around men, not housebroken and not so many manners.

Now one year later...He weighs in at 74.5lbs. Hmmm, too much of a good thing. About 5lbs too much. Could be because of less excercise(sp). I have been a bit depressed this winter(heck its winter) and haven't walked or gone to the dog park much.

Okay we've taken care of the painfully thin part. Some men he's still shy around. House broken fully and the manners...still a work in progress but MUCH better.

So why am I writing this???

He did something today that I've never seen before. He, Gar, expressed his own anal glands. The Vet lifted him onto the table and was examining him and I notice this little brown puddle behind him. "What's that?" I ask. The Vet said "oh, he expressed his anal glands, sometimes dogs do that when nervous or scared" Grabs some paper towels to clean it up, I feel around his back feet to see if he stepped in it and sure enough its wet. So I clean up his back legs and spray some stuff on him the Vet gives me. Then the "smell" hit. OMG, I've heard about the stench but never had the "pleasure" of actually smelling it. I came home and washed my hands real good but its either me or the dog that still reeks. Maybe a combination.

I think someone needs a bath. Me?, or the dog?

  MO is also generous with the vet. Yes, the smell is.....just awful. Didn't someone have some wipes here last week? Bet that would be fine for feet and tushie wiping as well as car care and your hand wash.

The smell does go away....even from the car unless you have fabric and then you might need to wash or wipe it.

Can you imagine being a pro groomer and expressing anal glads regularly as part of the bath? When I heard a groomer mention that all I could think of is , "No wonder they are so liberal with the doggie cologne." Probably trying to get the stink out of the shop.
