He is now 8 months old and has been with us four months already! Time has flown by. He has been a wonderful puppy and I am thrilled to have him as my first OES. Since the holidays, we have been leaving him out of the crate at nite to sleep with us. He usually ends up on the floor by my bed with our bedroom door being open he could be out and about. Thus far I have not awoken to any chewed objects or accidents. If he has an accident in the house it is usually after he has been on one of his puppy rampages running thru the house like a wild man. During the day he is seldomly crated as my husband is home and then I am home at night. If we leave to go to the store we will crate him then. I have not been brave enough to attempt leaving him home alone Just wanted to hear how others have handled this situation. To be honest as well, I am getting tired of looking at this crate sitting in the middle of my already small livingroom Happy New Year to everyone! Kim |

Simon's crate was up for a year and a half. He went in at night and when we went to work. If we left for short periods he was left gated in the kitchen.
It was down for a month when we got Garfunkel. He was not housebroken so the crate went back up again. He was in for about 6-8 months. We leave them gated in the kitchen now but I was just saying that maybe we need to re-visit the crates because we have been coming home to things...up and out of dog reach(we thought)...being chewed up. |
What I did with mine was leave them for short increments and, with each success, stretched that time out until they were staying long periods of time with free run of the house. Clyde (OES) was 9 months old when he started spending all day out and Bear (Komondor) was 6 months old but they both had my older "mama" dog to look out for them too at the time. She was a cranky old lady that wouldn't take any crap and I think she scared them into being good! Our newest puppy is 6 months old and my old lady is gone so he's gonna have to wait a little while until I trust my house alone to three crazy boys! |
a retired vet and current trainer I know says two years no matter what. I sort of felt my way and organ (in part because of his size) was crated until a little over a year; Marley until she was about 18 months. Puppy was a year on Sunday and their is no crate freedom in his near future - but then again he is soooo big he does damage just turning around |
I have a feeling that Jenny and her crate will be "best friends" until she is at least 2 years old. Although she only goes in at night and when we aren't home. My husband is home with her during the day. |
I did the same as Jill, small increments. Obe was 6 months, not one accident and has never chewed anything. He had free roam but his crate was still up, door stayed open till he was 1 1/2. Only reason I left it up, he would sleep in there at night and when I left I always came home to him being inside sleeping. Now he uses the couch, beds both mine and his.
I think I was blessed with a good puppy also! |
