Cracked/Broken Nail :(
I dunno how this happen but i suspect she caught her nail on something and cracked it, maybe 2 weeks ago. me and my wife changed her bandages regularly for about a week now and washing it kept it fairly clean until today i saw that she cracked and the bottom part of the nail is gone so its only the top part acting as a cover for the quick. This morning i trimmed it washed it with rubbing alcohol and cleaned some puss ( small amount of puss) and dirt out from the bottom put a lot of neosporin on it and clean sock and taped it... shes not limping she only wined a lil when i was cleaning it other then that shes good. it must be very uncomfortable for her so i'm thinking of taking her to the vet buy i dunno cuz i don't want them to tell me that the mail need to be removed completely and never going to grow  please help with any suggestions.

Also dose anyone know how long will it take for a nail to regrow the bottom part? or i have to remove the nail around the qucik? ahh damit this is killin me  |

Belle did this in herding once. Vet removed some of the jagged part, gave me some kind of powder to put on it and nicely told me to stop being such a wuss  The exposed part sort of shrivelled back and her nail grew back in time no problem. I probably had the good sense to keep her out of herding for a couple of weeks, but I don't recall.
The puss would worry me enough to take her to the vet just in case there's an infection brewing, but I wouldn't expect them to do anything drastic to her

| Harry did this but would not let me fuss over it. I cleaned what I could, snipped and then said, "You think you can do better?" I watched for infection, none thankfully. To this day is it not a normal nail, more a mutant, I'm sure he's worried I'll forget and try to clip it. Clip what??
Puss is always a concern, but washing, treating as you are is good. In time the quick will harden over. Still, the vet needs the college tuition money for their kid, take the dog for a visit. |
