Separation Anxiety

We have a 3 year old neutered male. We got him a year ago from a family who had 3 dogs and was attempting to train him to be a companion dog. Well apparently he wasn’t working out very well. Lane has been an amazing addition to our family (he makes 3) and could not be a better dog---except we can not leave him alone! For the last year I have done everything thinkable. We have seen private trainers, we are in a public class now, we have found that he has hyper thyroid and are treating that plus the doctor has put him on Prozac! Lane will not go in the house if we are home (he will hold it for days!) But no matter what if you leave him alone he pees (within the 1st 5 minutes we found from video taping him) and then poops. In the crate and all. Currently he is going to my mother’s house everyday to spend the day with her OES and he has NO problems. But this is not what I wanted the end result to be. We can’t leave the house on the weekends unless Lane can go where we are going. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them! The husband has lost all hope and wants to find a new home for him seeing how we just replaced the carpet throughout the entire house!

I would discuss this condition with Dr. Jean Dodd's - in relation to his hypothyroidism. She is an expert in hypothyroidism - particularly in OES. Hypothyroidism has many signs and symptoms - especially behavioral ones that you may not connect to it. Maybe she has a recommendation...

I would also seek the advice of a Veterinary Behaviorist. There may be other medications (if Prozac didn't help) that would be more approrpiate. They will also be able to give you some suggestions for behavior modification. If you want me to see if I can get a reference of one in your area - please email me.

I know there is a product sold that releases Pheromones (?sp) that is supposed to help with seperation anxiety.

I hope you find something helpful - I would hate to see you have to find him a new home. Why don't you speak to the OES Rescue people - they must deal with these situations frequently

Grannie Annie of NEOESR can be contacted at grannie.annie@neoesr.org

They are there to help try keeping OES OUT of rescue too!

Good Luck!

May I recommend THE DOG LISTENER, from Jan Fennell.
It is VERY enlightening and offers techniques that should help immediately. It is about viewing the situation from the dog's perspective.
