1.Maybe I'm missing something but I dont understand ice fishing. Lets go sit on the snow/icy lake with wind blowing drill a hole and watch the tip of the line or listen for the jingle of a bell. I know some have tents to protect from the weather but most do not. Like I said, maybe I'm missing something. 2. It amazes me to see how fast and agile our dogs are. Full speed, stop, spin, jump, or any combination there of. I saw Obe this a.m. go after the fox again. Amazing to watch an animal of his size go from one point over a small retaining wall, through the yard, and to the other drive way which is 50 yards away. All in roughly three seconds. Sure it was longer but not much. One second to see him take off, two to holler, three for him to stop at the end of drive. |

they can be incredibly fast - and I have had more than one nationally known trainer tell me they are one of the hardest breeds to train - because like a true herder, they can go from 0 to 60 before you even realize it!!
glad you were able to recall him and stop him before he got in the road!! |
Hi Shon, I dont get the ice fishing idea either but then all my friends know how much I HATE the cold, so I'm never going to get it.
My hubby constantly exclaims over how agile sheepies are. He keeps saying wow for such a big dog she's so nimble at twisting and turning and stop/start. He says Tiggy would make a great football player. Bear in mind that Aussie football is very different to your football. Although from memory Obe's a bit of a footy player. |
It's not so much the cold as it just looks BORING! I'm not the fisherman by any means, I don't do it. I would like to learn fly fishing as that looks like fun. At least in that one movie it did, name??? Fishing in the summer, you can move and try different spots etc. Ice fishing is sitting on a bucket starring a hole.
To each their own just wondering if maybe I'm missing something. |
I agree boring and COLD.
But then Wayne thinks brushing Tiggy looks boring and I quite enjoy it. So I guess it's each to their own. |
Yeah, but if you get an fishing house, stock it with beer, install a TV w/ a generator, couple of chairs, bunk beds......you got yourself a mobil mancave. |
Was it "A River Runs Through It" Shon? |

I think it's all about how many beers you have first! |

Yes very true but there in lies another problem. Not a big tv buff but I do like beer. Or an adrenaline junkie like me. Get towed/ride to the top of a 13,000 ft mountain, get off snowmobile find spot, snowmobile leaves, take a breath and DROP. What a rush! Then have a beer or two and thank mother nature for another wonderful day. You know to each there own. Wendy that was the name of the movie thanks. I would love to fish like that. |

Ok I have to bite on this one. (pun intended)
Todd is out fishing right now. I am actually talking to him on the phone as I type this. He loves the solitude and the challenge. Mind you he is NOT sitting out on the ice. The high today was -3 degrees. He has been out there most of the day. He is alternating between their 2 houses out on the lake - they are about 30 yards apart. He has a stove, car battery running a stereo and 12 volt light, his phone, a deck of cards and food. Right now he is making his last brat. He smokes, but doesn't drink beer. Oh, and he has his Vexilar (fish finder) and he can watch the fish swim around. It's his new B-day present, all the "bells and whistles". He had an older one, but he upgraded. Not the best fishing today, but says it beats sitting at home (he's on his days off.) The fishing you described Shon, is Tipups - you put down a big minnow and you wait for a big fish (northern, muskie) to bite. This flips the flag or rings the bell when the fish bites and runs with it. They do this also. but not tonight. He is in the house, angling. They also do darkhouse spearing (Todd has 6 brothers and they all fish.....they have shared houses, augers, tackle, bait, boats, everything. ) That is why our cat is named Tipup - he is white with a black tail that looks like the flag when a fish is on. |
Shon, I'm right there with you. An action kind of person. I've tried ice fishing...sat in a shanty for oh, about five minutes before I was bored. |

Exactly. Please note that I am not out there. |
I think the same thing about deer hunting. I do not understand the fascination of getting up before dawn, trudging out into the woods in the dark, climbing a tree to sit in a deer stand which is NOT comfortable and sit there, very quietly, for hours in the COLD, just waiting in hopes that one might pass by you.
You fellows define FUN in a very different way than we do. |

I guess if I grew up fishing/hunting it would be different. This summer I would like to learn to fly fish. But again from the movie A River Runs Through It... "10 and 2" looks okay, but the "shadow casting" Brad Pitt is doing in the movie looks like a lot more fun. Not even sure if there is such a thing, but looked cool. |
I would fish anywher if Brad was with me |
