There's another member with the OES/Pyrenees combination at home and I'm sure she'll pipe in but, in a similar vein of livestock guard dogs, I have 2 male OES and a male Komondor in one house and we all live in harmony for the most part. The Komondor is sometimes less than thrilled with the OES exuberance but he learned to roll with it just fine. He'll never initiate play but if he's made to play, he will! When the one OES was 2 and the Kom was one, we had a few male dominance fights but we worked through it and they're all pals.
I think if you're prepared, and you've done your research on the difference in the breed characteristics, you'll do just fine. |
actually I had a pyr and an OES and an american eskimo at one time. the Pyr didn't have the energy of the other two - but pretty much ignored them. Once they figured out he was no fune htye ignored him too. I wouldn't say he was much of a guardian for the house though. there are probably more active, more guarding dogs out there - regardless of their intended purpose. |
I've pretty much had only OES and pyrs for the last .......20 years . Oh, there was a beardie mixed in there, too....and Harry, whatever he is.
The only problem I had was with a Pyr bitch and an OES bitch. I'd highly encourage you to have different sexes for the dogs. It's just easier and less stress. So with a dominat female, go with a male Pyr pup. I was fortunate to be able to have 2 male Pyrs together, one being very laid back, but still they initially got into it. That is until I lifted the male dominant off the floor and threw him across the room (sorry Cesar, no rolling this guy). The dog and my husband were impress At one point I had 4 Pyrs, 2 each. The pack leader was a Pyr bitch but every so often she and the Pyr boy I threw would have a "conversation" but he'd back down. The two other Pyrs were happy to be in the background. You bet you'll have that Pyr inside at night, otherwise your neighbors will be at your throat. Pyrs want to bark all night. Never a Pyr off leash outside the yard. Never. Also walk him around the yard perimeter often so you reinforce the yard boundaries. |
I have two Golden Retreivers, an OES and a Great Pyr, all neutered males. With the exception of some initial squabbling when the Pyr came to live with us which has since stopped, all get along great. |
Sunds like a lovely boy pack! Neutering is the key.
Also your Pyr may be like Fox was........."'m a love bug, I don't like to rock the boat." Shane was like that too. Sam loved to rock the boat, stir things up and then look all innocent. He's the guy with the red bow in my file photos. |
Thanks for sharing your experiences! After reading all about your dogs I think I need to get another OES also!
