I heard that you can not bath a dog very often. Unfortunately, my dog needs a bath once a weeks, especially during winter time. Is it safe to bath him that often? I do not know what else to do, after a dog park he is all dirty, covered with mud and requires a bath. I would hate to make him suffer later on (skin allergies) because of his weekly baths. Thank you for any suggestions, Best, MR |

Instead of too frequent baths, try a good brushing. By a complete brush out when dry, most of the dirt falls out, leaving the beneficial oils near the skin.
Yes, dogs get dirty and dusty. If brushing doesn't work, maybe you can also add vacuuming. It takes training, but they can learn to accept the noise and strange sensation. This way you can reserve bathing for once a month........unless your luv is going "full body mudding." Spot washing, say for muddy boots is always acceptable. |
One of my dogs likes to roll in what I call "inappropriate things". Like Poop. Or dead animal carcasses, if she can find them. This requires a full bath in my opinion, as its really unhygienic and plain old disgusting. For the first year of their lives, she got a bath every week; it seemed the most we could go without her rolling in something gross was 10 days.
I was really careful to buy shampoos that were specifically designed for frequent washing, like Chris Christiansen's "Day to Day" shampoo, and I followed it up with complimentary conditioners to prevent drying. And it hasn't done my dog or her coat any harm at all. She's MUCH better about the inappropriate rolling these days, so its not as necessary. But I like clean dogs; they sit on the sofas and cuddle with us alot. So my girls still get bathed often; usually about once every 2 weeks, and they look great and have no skin problems. but Sheepieboss has a good point; if its just mud, I let it dry and brush it out later. I reserve bathing for "stinky" dogs. |
I was always told not to bath dogs too often. Mine have 2 a year unless something unforeseen happens. Summer gets face and feet washed a lot. I hae told her she is due for a a bath this week, but we will see |
I bath all three of my dogs weekly and have been doing this for years without any problems. You do, however, make sure that the shampoo you use is rinsed all the way out or you can get matts. |
I give full body baths about every 2 months. Inbetween is whites only or spot bathing. You can use a hair dryer to "blow" the dust out of their coat on a regular basis. |
I try to get a full bath every 2 months. I make an appt. within the 1st week of the second month. So it's on average about 2 1/2 months between baths. Other than that he gets brushed and has to be really dirty for him to get a partial bath.
Ex. other day chasing squirrels in the mud for an hour, yes he got rinsed off very well. For that matter, he was carried to the tub so dirty. |
