debcram 0, ice 1

Ok...NOW I hope my bad luck streak has passed. You may have noticed my absence the last couple days.

Wedneday after work, I went home to walk the dogs before going to my WW meeting.

Tony bought me these terrific things to put on my shoes to help with ice. They are like tire chains, but for your shoes.

It was snowing, so I made the distinct decision not to wear them, since the snow would provide friction.

Liz and I started our walk. We got about 1/2 block away, and the next thing I knew, I was flat on my back regaining conciousness. Everything was bright white, and I felt like electricity was running through the top half of my body. I couldn't see. It took a little bit but I could start seeing, and I saw my arms, but could not move them. I figured, I was dying. Seriously, I thought I was dying. I couldn't move and laid there for awhile, I had no idea of how much time had passed. Liz was licking my face. I could finally move my arms, but they were moving, not in any particular order. My hands didn't work at all.

Cars were driving by me...no one stopped as I laid on the sidewalk.

I realized I wasn't immediately dying, but that I probably had a brain hemorage, since my ears were ringing and I couldn't close my jaw. I figured Tony would be living with a paralized woman. I was terrified. And thought, I have to crawl home.

Somehow, I don't know or remember how, I got up and walked home. Someone finally stopped and asked if I was ok, I couldn't talk properly, because of my jaw, and my mind was not working, so I was very confused. I'm sure she thought I was drunk.

I got home (thank G-d) and called Tony to take me to the hospital. It was very difficult, because my hands still weren't working, and were completely numb.

We got there, and I had a lump the size of the sweet potato on the back of my head. They did a CT scan. They radiologist gave the report within 15 minutes that my brain looked fine, no unusual bleeds, but that I would have a goose egg on my head for a couple days.

I was still confused, and my hands still didn't work. Tony took me home (with Rx in hand) and I did the ice bag to my head thing. I honestly couldn't think, and could not read.

Thursday, I felt mentally shaper, but man on man did I feel beat up. Apparently when I fell, I twisted my left ankle, and either banged my right wrist, or it got banged up from Lizzie's leash (which was still attached to me) when I fell.

Most of my upper body muscles are still screwed up, but that will pass. My jaw is still sore, but working. I still have a headache, but my sweet potato is gone, just a bruised back of my head. It feels like either I was wearing a too tight ponytail for too long, or I'm wearing one of those old, rubber swimcaps that is too small.

My right hand is about 80% , but my left is still pretty tingly, and parts are still numb.

I was pretty lucky. I did not fall on my bad hip. That would have been a major problem, since I'm still having trouble from it.

But, I honestly thought I was dying. And it wasn't good. I'm not ready.

Today is the first day, my mental state is totally back to normal. I can see and think properly.

I'm back. And I hoping my bad luck streak is over. This is the third in 5 months. Aug, car accident, Oct, break in, and now the fall.

Enough.

oh..Deb..sooo sorry!!! I can't believe no one stopped to help you!!!   I hope you continue to mend..and that all that 'bad luck' is done!!!!!!!
That whole scenerio just sounds beyond scarey. :ghug:
I am so glad Lizzy stayed with you! I can't believe you were laying there, and NO one stopped.
SO thankful you made if home and could call Tony.

Do you have a followup with your family doctor? PLEASE take care and know that we are thing of you.

Lori
You are so lucky!!!
I am glad to hear you are doing better. That must have been some fall :( :(
Do you know how you fell?
Was it ice?
If it had been me my hip would be killing me!
So sorry this happened to you.
Please be more careful. :)
We need you here!!! :)
Wow, that is scary!!!! 8O

Sounds like you gave yourself one heck of a concussion.
I agree, f/u is a good idea. Especially seeing you still have some residual numbness. What did they put you on for meds?
HOLY :cow:

NOBODY stopped!! You were obviously out walking the dog, not some drunk on the streets. I can't believe nobody stopped to help you.

It sounds really scary. I'm so glad you are OK :ghug:

That's it, number three over and done with. No more bad luck for you! Glad you are getting the feeling back in your hands so you can still type :D
I'm glad you are better.
How is your neck? I wonder if some of the body control issues are neck related?
Glad you are feeling better. You must have hit just right. I too am in awe the no one stopped to help.
I'm glad you are on the mend and parts are starting to work again! One friend broke her C1 vert .......again....in a fall. Another lady I take to church fell 3 years ago, C5/6 problem, and still can't move her arms well.

You are so fortunate! Bless Lizzy for being a good companion. And bricks to those who did not stop to help.......could they see you for the snow?
id say your streak of bad luck should definately be over now.....for petes sake, if tony buys you something for winter weather...wear them!!!!!!!!!!!

i dont want to sound like an old jewish mother, but really deb, you SHOULD know better.....tisk, tisk, tisk!

ps....im glad youre okay...take it easy...that would have scared the shiesters out of me!
Thanks everyone. I, too, was shocked (when I realized) no one stopped. I remember laying there wishing a police car would come by. But ya know, they are never around when you need them

Dawn, when you wrote "f/u" I had to take a double take! As luck would have it, Tuesday, I had routine blood work done, and Thursday my doc called with the results, so I told her the story. I will be following up with her. The emergency room never told me to have a follow up. I hate to say, I wasn't impressed with the care I got.

I definately slipped on ice. There were icy patches on the sidewalk under the snow. In fact, I was told to call my association and have them pay the med bills, since they maintain the area where I fell.

The only meds I was given were a heavy duty dose (800 mg) of Ibuprofin, for days, and Vicadin for night. The Vicadin is funny, I sleep, but can still feel the hurt when I turn over, but it gets me back to sleep right away. I think that's the point of it.

My neck is sore (muscles) but fine. I was fortunate. They never said the neck was an issue, so I have to assume (which I hate to do) that it isn't. I'm sure my doc will explain it all to me...the "lights" and the electric feelings puzzle me.

This is the first Saturday in YEARS I've just stayed home and not run around like a crazy woman doing errands or working. It feels greats to be here. And, once again...it's snowing here.
That is so bad that no one stopped. How on earth did you get home by yourself. I am pleased you are on the mend, I think you best stay in for a week or two...x
As horrible as it is, glad to know that it was not worse. You and Liz made it home ok. It is really unbelievable how people can just pass by without offering any help.

Did that woman who stopped and asked if you were ok do more to help than just asking?

You must be very scared when you laid there being so helpless.

Liz was a good girl staying by you the whole time. She must be very worried and confused too.

Feel better soon. Clayden sends turbo slurps to your boo boo.
Man Deb when you do it, you do it up right.

Sorry this happened to you. That had to be really scary laying there and not being able to move.

I have to echo everyone else's comments...can't believe no one stopped to help. I hope it was because they couldn't see you over snowbanks and just saw a dog. Or maybe because they were so intense on getting home or wherever that it caused tunnel vision.

Let us know what the Dr. says on the f/u(I did a double take on that one too).
I am so sorry this happened to you. How frightening. And how awful no one stopped to help   . That is just crazy what is wrong with people.

I hope you have a speedy recovery and I hope everything feels better and up to par soon. :ghug:
deb soryy about your fall glad you are ok time for a trip to fla
Deb I am so sorry you injured yourself...how scarey was that? I hope you have a full recovery soon. Good Lizzy for staying with you. I hope you always take your cell phn with you.
Regarding being left on the highway and no one offering to help: My husband's motorcycle had fallen over on top of him, 18 inches from the street and two cars drove by, looked at him and went on their way, NEVER STOPPED!
Get better soon, and bad luck go away!
Deb, that's terrible.
They say things come in threes so that should be it for you.

I agree with the others who suggested a follow up. Your neck could
definitely be causing the numbness in your hands and it sounds like emergency were concerned with your assessing you head and brain in case they needed to take immediate action there.
Good luck hopefully its all just muscle spasm and sprains and strains. Take lots of care of yourself.
8O So sorry this happened to you and I'm so glad you are recovering! I have those boot traction things too and won't leave home without them! I'm still nervous even wearing them!

You might want to consult with a physiotherapist once the pain has subsided. There is often residual stuff in the soft tissue that lingers after an injury. Meantime, enjoy your rest! :ghug:
Ohhhh myyyyyy!

YOU NEED SOME NICE CHICKEN SOUP! :ghug:

Listen, you need to stop trying to teach Lizzie to roll over by example. It's taking a toll on you!

I am sorry you went through this psychological near-death experience. They can be quite frightening no matter what your state of "readiness."

Heal!

Helen...I ALWAYS take my cell with my when I walk the dogs...except...that day...the same day I didn't wear my ice traction gear. Its really crazy. But I don't know that I would have been able to dial then, anyways.

It wasn't a highway. Its my residential street, which sort of makes it creepier, since people were going slowly, and must have seen me and Liz.
OMG, Deb!! I'm SO relieved you're okay after that ordeal!:phew: A fall like that would have put me back in the hospital again for another disk surgery. Do you know how long you were out?

If your neck hurts, try cold compresses - they always work better for me than heat. You can put one on your ankle, too, to keep the swelling down.

Rest the rest of the week-end and don't even THINK about going outside!
Oh my gosh, I'm glad that you are going to be alright. Very scary.

Sucks that your neighbors didn't even bother to stop. I took a bad fall once rollerblading and laid in the street for a couple of minutes. Some guy was mowing the lawn and didn't even bother to ask if I was alright. It's pretty creepy when people are not even concerned.
I am glad you are feeling better (I would have stopped, especially since you had a dog :) ) Please follow up with your primary care You could have a whip lash injury to your neck , dosen't show on xrays. I bet you are sore!!
Ah- that is so scary, I'm glad you're ok though!!

Give Lizzie a hug from me for being such a good girl too, Walter would have been halfway to China if that happened to me
Oh Deb! I'm so glad you're okay! That's so scary. Rest up and make Tony do everything for you.

I remember when I broke my nose with my car door and was gushing blood, several people walked by and didn't even ask...they did the accidental eye contact...oops look away fast thing...
Deb, I can't believe that whole horrible scenario. Glad you are feeling better, but be sure to f/u with your primary care about the lingering problems.

Bless Lizzie.

:ghug:
oh my!!I can't believe how lucky you were not to have been hurt more seriouslly!!
I am always torn about the issue of having the home owners association pay for anything - just ends u with higher association fees :?

I know what you are saying, however...I've been paying dues for over 10 years, and they keep going up anyways. Also, its a new year...new insurance deductable for me, $2500. Its the associations turn to pay. With or without this claim, they will raise my association fee next year.
What a frightening experience for you, Deb. I echo the sentiments of everyone else in that I cannot believe no one stopped to help. I can't imagine driving past someone lying on the sidewalk in the ice and snow and not stopping to see if they're okay. I'm glad you made it home and got some treatment. I hope you'll mend quickly, too. Do be careful and take care of yourself, including follow up treatments. I would definitely contact the HOA about paying the bills.
OMG! This is so scary! Please get better soon so I can see you :D
